Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Currently, in the United States, the topic of healthcare reform is in the back of everyone’s mind. What will come of our healthcare system? Will the cost of healthcare decrease? Will patients have better access to care? With this Capstone Experience/Thesis, I wanted to explore the differences between the current healthcare system that we have in the United States, to the nearly seventy-year-old National Health Service (NHS) in the United Kingdom, which provides healthcare to all. The NHS is free at the point of care and is funded by taxation. To understand if such a system would work in the …

Staffing National Health Care Reform: A Role For Advanced Practice Nurses, Linda H. Aiken, William M. Sage
Akron Law Review
Expanding access and coverage while containing costs can only be accomplished by getting more health care value for our money. Two facts about our current system make this seem possible. First, the currently uninsured are not costless. Providing stop-gap health care to those who lack health insurance is extremely expensive -- people without formal coverage cannot afford preventive services, delay treatment of illness and face substantial barriers to reaching appropriate providers. When they receive care, it is often degrading, usually complicated and costly, and more than occasionally too late. The cost of this "uncompensated" care is borne by all of …

Nursing And The Future Of Health Care: The Independent Practice Imperative, Nancy A. Hoffman
Nursing And The Future Of Health Care: The Independent Practice Imperative, Nancy A. Hoffman
Golden Gate University Law Review
In recent years an ever increasing problem has emerged within the health care delivery system in the United States: there is a shortage of registered nurses to meet patient care needs. This shortage raises serious public policy concerns about how society will be assured of quality health care and who will provide that care in the future. An awareness of the problems that have led to the nursing shortage and exploration of alternatives to the present health care delivery system are required in order to remedy the problem. The efforts of the nursing profession to overcome the effects of the …
