Study Of Canadian Health Policy Research Centres: Final Report, Michele L. Mekel, Samuel Shortt
Study Of Canadian Health Policy Research Centres: Final Report, Michele L. Mekel, Samuel Shortt
Michele L Mekel
With today’s escalating demands for accountability, Canada’s academic-linked health policy centres are feeling pressure from key funders to prove their effectiveness. At the same time, their contributions through applied health services and policy research and knowledge-transfer activities have become increasingly critical to health policy development and decision making.
To assist in easing the tension, this study identifies key operational success strategies so individual centres can adopt those that are most suited to their particular structural model. Furthermore, this study documents the challenges shared by centres so that they can jointly develop tools and solutions. Utilizing the findings in these ways, …

Rearranging Deck Chairs On The Titanic: Why The Incarceration Of Individuals With Serious Mental Illness Violates Public Health, Ethical, And Constitutional Principles And Therefore Cannot Be Made Right By Piecemeal Changes To The Insanity Defense, Jennifer Bard
Jennifer Bard
The author argues that the problem of adjudicating the mentally ill who commit crimes is too large a societal issue to be resolved by refining the insanity defense. Since this is a threat to the public's health, it is fair to describe the current situation as a public health crisis. First, by not providing adequate mental health resources we create conditions in which people with mental illness find themselves in situations where due to their illness they have the opportunity to commit criminal acts which are causally related to the impairment of their thought process. Second, when people with mental …

False Advertising, Animals, And Ethical Consumption, Carter Dillard
False Advertising, Animals, And Ethical Consumption, Carter Dillard
Carter Dillard
In light of the fact that today's consumers often want their products to be created in the most environmentally, globally, and animal friendly ways possible, unethical sellers sometimes succumb to the incentive to persuade consumers that goods were created more ethically than they actually were. False advertising law represents a rare, albeit roundabout, legal opening for animal advocates to deal with issues of animal mistreatment, regardless of legislative and executive branch disregard of the importance of animal protection. Whether there is a beneficial change in the law or not, current opportunities in the market for these cases should be sought …

'Moral Rights And Their Application To Australia: A Book Review' (2004) 32 (2) The Federal Law Review 331-336, Matthew Rimmer
Matthew Rimmer
In Moral Rights and Their Application in Australia, Maree Sainsbury offers a summary of the new moral rights regime established in Australia in 2000. It is a decent guide and handbook to moral rights for legal practitioners, the authors of copyright work, and the users of copyright material. As the author notes:
"The Australian moral rights legislation impacts on the rights and obligations of many people in diverse circumstances, from the creator of a highly unique work of art to the designer of a web site incorporating factual information or graphics which someone else has created. Any person creating or …

'Information Feudalism: Who Owns The Knowledge Economy. A Book Review' (2003) 21 (1) Prometheus 127-132, Matthew Rimmer

Back in 1995, Peter Drahos wrote a futuristic article called ‘Information feudalism in the information society’. It took the form of an imagined history of the information society in the year 2015. Drahos provided a pessimistic vision of the future, in which the information age was ruled by the private owners of intellectual property. He ended with the bleak, Hobbesian image:"It is unimaginable that the information society of the 21st century could be like this. And yet if abstract objects fall out of the intellectual commons and are enclosed by private owners, private, arbitrary, unchecked global power will become a …

Diagnosis Is Anencephaly And The Parents Ask About Organ Donation: Now What?, Jennifer Bard
Jennifer Bard
The issues surrounding organ donation by anencephalic infants such as Baby Avery are complex for all involved. This Article will examine anencephalic organ donation by providing an overview of the legal, medical, social, and ethical issues that hospital counsel and ethics committees will face when presented with anencephalic organ donation scenarios. This discussion will be framed by recounting recent cases involving parents who wanted to donate their anencephalic infant's organs. Furthermore, this Article will propose that the topic of anencephalic organ donation be thoroughly discussed and well understood in every medical/legal setting in which an anencephalic infant may present itself.
Abortion And Women's Legal Personhood In Germany: A Contribution To The Feminist Theory Of The State, D. A. Jeremy Telman
Abortion And Women's Legal Personhood In Germany: A Contribution To The Feminist Theory Of The State, D. A. Jeremy Telman
D. A. Jeremy Telman
This article looks at abortion regulation in Germany in the context of the full range of laws through which the state specifies the status of women as legal persons. Reviewing Germany's most important abortion law decisions in 1975 and 1993, the article contends that while the Constitutional Court struck a balance between the East German legacy of reproductive freedom and West Germany's robust protections of the right to life, it did so by undermining the legal structures that had facilitated full civil, economic and political equality for women in East Germany through legal regimes geared towards protecting women's reproductive autonomy.

Rising Temperatures: Rising Tides, Prof. Elizabeth Burleson

Transboundary environmental problems do not distinguish between political boundaries. Global warming is expected to cause thermal expansion of water and melt glaciers. Both are predicted to lead to a rise in sea level. We must enlarge our paradigms to encompass a global reality and reliance upon global participation.
