Flood Hazard And Vulnerability Mapping Using Deep Learning And Earth Observation Data, Nafiseh Ghasemian Sorboni Jun 2024

Flood Hazard And Vulnerability Mapping Using Deep Learning And Earth Observation Data, Nafiseh Ghasemian Sorboni

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Urban flood risk assessment is critical for safeguarding lives and infrastructure amid frequent floods. Recent advances in Earth Observation (EO) data enable the creation of flood risk maps with enhanced spatial and temporal resolutions. While traditional Machine Learning (ML) algorithms lack optimal feature selection, Deep Learning (DL) algorithms excel in extracting complex patterns from EO data. This dissertation delves into the estimation of flood hazard and vulnerability within urban environments through DL algorithms and EO data. Several innovative methodologies were proposed: 1) A Convolutional Siamese Network (CSN) was devised for urban flood mapping using SAR satellite imagery. This method employed …

Evaluation Of Effectiveness In Seismic Microzonation Hazard Mapping In Canada: Communication, Use, Standardization And Levels, Meredith L. Fyfe Aug 2023

Evaluation Of Effectiveness In Seismic Microzonation Hazard Mapping In Canada: Communication, Use, Standardization And Levels, Meredith L. Fyfe

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Comprehensive seismic hazard maps in the form of seismic microzonation maps have been produced for many populous and seismically active Canadian cities. These maps are important tools for regional decision making for technical (engineering) and non-technical (planning, emergency management, insurance) applications. Outcomes from stakeholder engagement indicate that non-technical end users are not confident in their interpretation of the maps or the mapped site effect predictors (metrics). Users may seek seismic hazard information from lower-level mappings, such as the global Vs30 mosaic, which, when compared against the higher-level Canadian mappings, was found to correctly estimate site class with 26% accuracy …

Framework For Assessing Information System Security Posture Risks, Syed Waqas Hamdani Jun 2023

Framework For Assessing Information System Security Posture Risks, Syed Waqas Hamdani

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

In today’s data-driven world, Information Systems, particularly the ones operating in regulated industries, require comprehensive security frameworks to protect against loss of confidentiality, integrity, or availability of data, whether due to malice, accident or otherwise. Once such a security framework is in place, an organization must constantly monitor and assess the overall compliance of its systems to detect and rectify any issues found. This thesis presents a technique and a supporting toolkit to first model dependencies between security policies (referred to as controls) and, second, devise models that associate risk with policy violations. Third, devise algorithms that propagate risk when …

Uncertainties In Internal Pressure Of Oil Pipelines And Implications For The Reliability Analysis, Yue Liu Aug 2021

Uncertainties In Internal Pressure Of Oil Pipelines And Implications For The Reliability Analysis, Yue Liu

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The internal pressure is the most important operational load for oil and gas pipelines. The maximum operating pressure (MOP) is the maximum pressure the pipeline is qualified to be operated according to a given standard. In deterministic fitness-for-service (FFS) assessment of in-service pipelines containing flaws such as corrosion defects and cracks, the remaining pressure containment capacity of the pipeline is evaluated and compared with MOP multiplied by a factor of safety to determine if immediate rehabilitation actions for the pipeline are necessary. However, the actual internal pressure of an in-service pipeline is however uncertain and fluctuates with time. Due to …

The Effects Of Customer Segmentation, Borrowers' Behaviours And Analytical Methods On The Performance Of Credit Scoring Models In The Agribusiness Sector, Daniela Lazo, Raffaella Calabrese, Cristian Bravo Roman Jan 2021

The Effects Of Customer Segmentation, Borrowers' Behaviours And Analytical Methods On The Performance Of Credit Scoring Models In The Agribusiness Sector, Daniela Lazo, Raffaella Calabrese, Cristian Bravo Roman

Statistical and Actuarial Sciences Publications

The main aim of this study is to analyse the joint effects of customer segmentation, borrowers' characteristics and modelling techniques on the classification accuracy of a scoring model for agribusinesses. To this end, we used data provided by a Chilean company on 161,163 loans from January 2007 to December 2013. We considered random forest, neural network and logistic regression models as analytical methods. Regarding the borrowers' profiles, we examined the effects of socio-demographic, repayment-behaviour, agribusiness-specific and credit-related variables. We also segmented the customers as individuals, SMEs and large holdings. As the segments show different risk behaviours, we obtained a better …

Applying Probabilistic Methods To The Nato Military Load Classification System For Bridges, Andrew J. Macdonald Dec 2014

Applying Probabilistic Methods To The Nato Military Load Classification System For Bridges, Andrew J. Macdonald

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Military vehicles frequently use civilian bridges. The loading effects of military vehicles, both wheeled and tracked, are specific and different than those of civilian vehicles in normal traffic. Calibration to determine appropriate load factors for military loading of civilian bridges has not been fully performed and the corresponding levels of safety have not been quantified. This lack of calibration prevents the implementation of limit state design methods for military bridges and the evaluation bridges for military loading. This thesis quantifies probabilistically the single lane traffic load effects on interior girders of simply supported slab-on-girder bridges for three military vehicles in …

Stochastic Simulation Of Multiple-Station Ground Motions And Its Applications, Taojun Liu Aug 2013

Stochastic Simulation Of Multiple-Station Ground Motions And Its Applications, Taojun Liu

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Approaches to simulate single- and multiple-component multiple-station ground motion records with target spatial coherency and spatial correlation structures are developed for scenario events in this study. To develop the approaches, spatial correlation of the Fourier amplitude spectrum for a random orientation and for two orthogonal directions is assessed, and empirical equations are suggested. Moreover, spatial coherency of ground motions for two orthogonal horizontal directions is estimated using actual records from seven seismic events. Empirical coherency function is suggested for the components of records in two orthogonal horizontal directions at single and multiple recording stations. It was also found that the …

Fuzzy Expert-Cocomo Risk Assessment And Effort Contingency Model In Software Project Management, Ekananta Manalif Mar 2013

Fuzzy Expert-Cocomo Risk Assessment And Effort Contingency Model In Software Project Management, Ekananta Manalif

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Software development can be considered to be the most uncertain project when compared to other types of projects due to the uncertainty in the customer requirements, the complexity of the process, and the intangible nature of the product. In order to increase the likelihood of success in managing a software project, the project manager(s) must invest more time and effort in the project planning phase. The two main activities in project planning phase are effort estimation and risk management which has to be executed together because the accuracy of the effort estimation is highly dependent on the size and nature …
