Fungi In Flux | Designing Regenerative Materials And Products With Mycelium, Arvind Bhallamudi
Fungi In Flux | Designing Regenerative Materials And Products With Mycelium, Arvind Bhallamudi
Masters Theses
As the world grapples with the escalating crisis of climate threats and environmental degradation, this research delves into the synergistic potential of design and biology, developing safe and sustainable materials for applications in prototyping, furniture and interior design. Harnessing the power of a unique organism - fungi, the study proposes an accessible, efficient, and resilient material resource system. It utilizes local waste streams and mycelium (the vegetative part of fungi) to grow functional structures. An experimental and small-scale protocol is modeled by testing bio-fabrication and bio-printing methods. The composites' performance qualities and characteristics are evaluated through mechanical testing and a …

Investigating Collaborative Explainable Ai (Cxai)/Social Forum As An Explainable Ai (Xai) Method In Autonomous Driving (Ad), Tauseef Ibne Mamun
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Explainable AI (XAI) systems primarily focus on algorithms, integrating additional information into AI decisions and classifications to enhance user or developer comprehension of the system's behavior. These systems often incorporate untested concepts of explainability, lacking grounding in the cognitive and educational psychology literature (S. T. Mueller et al., 2021). Consequently, their effectiveness may be limited, as they may address problems that real users don't encounter or provide information that users do not seek.
In contrast, an alternative approach called Collaborative XAI (CXAI), as proposed by S. Mueller et al (2021), emphasizes generating explanations without relying solely on algorithms. CXAI centers …

Risks To Student Achievement In Higher Education, Angela Atwell, Bettina Mrusek, James Solti, Keith Wilson

A university system sets out to deliver educational experiences that meet set goals such as the achievement of learning outcomes for individual courses and program outcomes for degree programs. There are many factors that impact the successful achievement of student learning outcomes and there-fore successful program design and implementation. If courses are not effec-tively designed with assessments properly aligned to learning outcomes, student achievement is challenging to measure. If faculty do not consistently adhere to college and/or university policies regarding submission of assignments, student behavior and perceptions of expectations in future courses may be skewed. In addition, students may, for …

From Letters to Logistics - The enabling role of a lean transformation programme
in a national postal service: The case of An Post, Ireland
Seamus O’Reilly (Cork University Business School), David Murray (An Post) and Joe Aherne (Leading Edge Group)
Abstract
Purpose
This paper investigates the role of a lean transformation programme in supporting the transition of a national postal (mail) service from a traditional letter delivery service to a competitive parcel delivery service.
Methodology
Given the objective an intrinsic case study (Stake, 2005) approach was adopted, as this specific case was of interest. To support this approach the researchers …
Six Sigma And Lean Approach For Enhanced Process Value Chain, Maryam Zulfiqar
Six Sigma And Lean Approach For Enhanced Process Value Chain, Maryam Zulfiqar
International Conference on Lean Six Sigma
Abstract
This research highlight the different aspects of implementing lean and six-sigma approach, their contrasting features and integration in manufacturing organizations. Qualitative research method has been used to conduct this research as the defined period of time for the research was limited. This method was pertinent for the deep analysis of literature and case studies of concerned approaches. It helped to conduct the research in a subjective manner. The use of secondary data saved time from preparing the questionnaires or surveys also the ethical approval from the University of the West of Scotland was not required. Descriptive feature of qualitative …
Applying Lean Six Sigma And Systematic Layout Planning To Improve Patient Transportation Equipment Storage In An Acute Care Hospital, Sandra Furterer, Pratheeka Kancharla
Applying Lean Six Sigma And Systematic Layout Planning To Improve Patient Transportation Equipment Storage In An Acute Care Hospital, Sandra Furterer, Pratheeka Kancharla
International Conference on Lean Six Sigma
Purpose:
The purpose of this project was to optimize the patient transportation process at an acute care hospital to achieve reduced transportation times.
Methodology:
A detailed Lean Six Sigma study on the patient transport and equipment handling processes helped to determine possible ways to reduce the equipment handling time which eventually reduces the patient transportation time. The Systematic Layout Planning (SLP) approach usually applied in manufacturing environments was used to identify which patient transport equipment was needed to be stored in which locations throughout the hospital footprint. The assignment of equipment to locations was determined based on frequency of use, …
Designing An Adjustable And Transportable Staircase, Allison Currey
Designing An Adjustable And Transportable Staircase, Allison Currey
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
People climb stairs every day, whether it is at work, a store, or at home; however, there are populations such as people who are elderly, with pathologies, with Parkinson’s disease, or have suffered from a stroke that see climbing the stairs as a challenging task and it decreases their mobility and quality of life. Factors such as muscle weakness, strategy, and balance have been previously investigated in these populations during stair climbing. However, few studies have researched how stair climb ability, balance, and perception of difficulty are influenced by step height. The objective of this thesis is to design a …

Development Of A System Architecture For The Prediction Of Student Success Using Machine Learning Techniques, Tatiana A. Cardona
Doctoral Dissertations
“ The goals of higher education have evolved through time based on the impact that technology development and industry have on productivity. Nowadays, jobs demand increased technical skills, and the supply of prepared personnel to assume those jobs is insufficient. The system of higher education needs to evaluate their practices to realize the potential of cultivating an educated and technically skilled workforce. Currently, completion rates at universities are too low to accomplish the aim of closing the workforce gap. Recent reports indicate that 40 percent of freshman at four-year public colleges will not graduate, and rates of completion are even …

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) has launched several suborbital scientific payloads aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard in 2017 and 2019. Students continue gaining hands-on experience in rocket design and construction, and payload integration and testing of future and more mature payloads to be launched into space. A Level 3 Rocket is being designed and developed at ERAU to serve as a scaled-down model research platform for launching and testing of payloads that will be later flown in commercial suborbital platforms such as Blue Origin’s New Shepard and PLD space Miura 1 rockets. Computer simulations were conducted to calculate the key parameters …

Reflections On Teaching System Dynamics Modeling To Secondary School Students For Over 20 Years, Diana Fisher
Reflections On Teaching System Dynamics Modeling To Secondary School Students For Over 20 Years, Diana Fisher
Systems Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper contains the description of a successful system dynamics (SD) modeling approach used for almost a quarter-century in secondary schools, both in algebra classes and in a year-long SD modeling course. Secondary school students have demonstrated an ability to build original models from the news, write technical papers explaining their models, and present a newfound understanding of dynamic feedback behavior to an audience. The educational learning theory and instructional methods used for both the algebra and modeling courses are detailed, with examples. Successful student SD modeling experiences suggest the SD approach can expand the sophistication of topics that secondary …

The Elimination Of Waste In Higher Education: Prescriptions For Doing The Right Things The Right Way, Michael Hayden, Randy Peters
The Elimination Of Waste In Higher Education: Prescriptions For Doing The Right Things The Right Way, Michael Hayden, Randy Peters
International Conference on Lean Six Sigma
The authors defined waste in higher education and describe proven strategies to reduce waste, from and engineering and technical background, informed by HE administrative perspectives. It is important to categorize waste and then prioritize it because effort should be spent on eliminating the waste that has the greatest potential to improve the efficiency of the entire system. Waste can only be dealt with by someone with the span of control over that waste.
