Supply Chain Optimization Of A Local Small Business From The Food-Service Industry Using Simulation Models, Aimee Montalvo

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Various supply chain disruptions can cause revenue losses, low productivity, and damaged reputations. Some examples of such disruptions include increased supply costs, labor shortages, pandemics, natural disasters, or transportation delays. For instance, during the COVID-19 pandemic, several small and medium enterprises (SMEs) suffered greatly from labor shortages, delayed and costly supplies, and decreased demand. In this research, we present a case study of a small local business from the fast-food industry that experienced the loss of employees and delays and analyzed the increased cost of supplies. We created visualization modules with the SMEs supply chain performance measures to see the …

Enabling The “Easy Button” For Broad, Parallel Optimization Of Functions Evaluated By Simulation, Andrew Gibson

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Java Optimization by Simulation (JOBS) is presented: an open-source, object-oriented Java library designed to enable the study, research, and use of optimization for models evaluated by simulation. JOBS includes several novel design features that make it easy for a simulation modeler, without extensive expertise in optimization or parallel computation, to define an optimization model with deterministic and/or stochastic constraints, choose one or more metaheuristics to solve it and run, using massively parallel function evaluation to reduce wall-clock times.

JOBS is supported by a new language independent, application programming interface (API) for remote simulation model evaluation and a serverless computing environment …

Development And Prospect Of Simulation Research In China, Xiaogang Qiu, Duan Hong, Xie Xu, Mengna Zhu

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: It is important to treat modeling and simulation (M&S) as a discipline to advance its development. In China, M&S has been researched and applied over 40 years, and is gradually becoming an independent discipline. Modeling and simulating the complex systems are the challenge, however, this also brings grand opportunity for M&S to widen and improve itself. Since 1980s, the M&S community in China has realized the broad applications of M&S, comprehended M&S from multiple perspectives, conducted extensive research on basic questions, and discussed the composition of the basic simulation theory. By summarizing these achievements, the future works that have …

A Simulation Study On Baggage Screening At San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport, Marian Ott Mar 2021

A Simulation Study On Baggage Screening At San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport, Marian Ott

Master's Theses

Efficient passenger flow is a crucial objective at both small and larger airports. One central part of this is the handling of checked luggage which is influenced by necessary security screening. Within this thesis, these processes are studied at San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport. The underlying problem of the airport is its outbound luggage system which was already suffering from delays prior to Covid-19. Delays were never measured and the bottleneck responsible for them was never identified. However, expected growth in passenger and flight volume necessitates to predict when customer dissatisfaction and extensive luggage delays are inevitable, given that …

A Quantized State System Method With Adaptive Quantum, Zhihua Li, Dongjin Fu, Li Guang, Zhihua Fan

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Quantized state system (QSS) is a new numerical integration method. It has advantages over the traditional time-discrete integration methods in solving general ordinary differential equation (ODE) systems. But it is hard to choose an appropriate quantum for the QSS method. In order to improve the accuracy and efficiency of QSS, a quantized state system method with adaptive quantum (VQSS) is proposed. Combined with the idea of step control in the variable step Runge-Kutta method, it can adaptively change the quantum in the process of computation. The feasibility of this algorithm is verified by the simulation of two examples …

A Quantization-Based Integration Method For Stiff Ordinary Differential Equations, Zhihua Li, Jiang De, Chenjia Wu, Zhihua Fan Jan 2021

A Quantization-Based Integration Method For Stiff Ordinary Differential Equations, Zhihua Li, Jiang De, Chenjia Wu, Zhihua Fan

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: QSS(Quantized State System) has advantages over the traditional time-discrete integration methods in solving general ordinary differential equation (ODE) systems, but it is not suitable for solving the stiff ODE systems. To effectively solve the stiff ODE systems, a step-correction optimization algorithm based on QSS (SCOA based-on QSS) is proposed, which combines the ideas of the QSS method and the implicit trapezoidal integral method. The simulation results of three typical stiff ODE cases show that the SCOA based-on QSS algorithm has advantages over other algorithms, and the simulation accuracy can be significantly improved by appropriately reducing the quantum size.

Study On Validation Of Simulation Models Based On Weight Matrix Gray Relational Analysis, Xiaolei Ning, Yingxia Wu, Zhanqi Chen

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: When used to validation of simulation models, ordinary gray relational analysis (GRA) usually stresses the similarity but ignores the nearness between the simulation test time series and flight test time series, while the nearness is part of model error. To reduce the risk in application of GRA to validation of simulation models, a new matrix gray relational analysis was proposed, which was in view of the similarity and the nearness between the simulation test time series and flight test time series, so it had a higher accuracy and reliability. The new model could solve the relational analysis problem with …

Queueing Models With Map Arrivals Useful In Service Sectors, Srinivas R. Chakravarthy Jan 2021

Queueing Models With Map Arrivals Useful In Service Sectors, Srinivas R. Chakravarthy

Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering Publications

Queueing models have found applications in many fields, notably in service sectors. In this paper, we study queueing models that have significant applications in service sectors. We look at multi-server systems with MAP arrivals. We assume phase type services for single server systems and exponential services when dealing with multi-server systems. All arriving customers finding no idle server will not wait in the system to receive services but rather leave their information in a registry list. These customers will be reached out on a first-come-first-served basis (FCFS) by an idle server soon after completing its current service. The reach out …

The US military can no longer afford to be reactive, leaving critical cost analyses to the months and years following operations or full-scale conflicts. By leveraging cost in wargaming as part of the Joint planning process, DOD can provide Congress and the American taxpayers a range of potential costs associated with various military engagements that reflect fiscal and operational realities.

The Impact Of Unequal Processing Time Variability On Reliable And Unreliable Merging Line Performance, Rodrigo Romero-Silva, Sabry Shaaban, Erika Marsillac, Zouhair Laaarraf

Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications

Research on merging lines is expanding as their use grows significantly in the contexts of remanufacturing, reverse logistics and developing economies. This article is the first to study the behavior of unpaced, reliable, and unreliable merging assembly lines that are deliberately unbalanced with respect to their coefficients of variation (CV). Conducting a series of simulation runs with varying line lengths, buffer storage capacities and unbalanced CV patterns delivers intriguing results. For both reliable and unreliable lines, the best pattern for generating higher throughput is found to be a balanced configuration (equal CVs along both parallel lines), except for unreliable lines …

Identification Of Moving Bottlenecks In Production Systems, Funmilayo Mofoluwasola Adeyinka

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Manufacturing sector have been plagued by bottlenecks from time immemorial, leading to loss of productivity and profitability, various research effort has been expended towards identifying and mitigating the effects of bottlenecks on production lines. However, traditional approaches often fail in identifying moving bottlenecks. The current data boom and giant strides made in the machine learning field proffers an alternative means of using the large volume of data generated by machines in identifying bottlenecks. In this study, a hierarchical agglomerative clustering algorithm is used in identifying potential groups of bottlenecks within a serial production line.

A serial production line with five …
