The purpose of this project is to design and manufacture an improved upper control arm for a 1988-1998 Chevrolet K2500 truck. This component controls the suspension of a vehicle and will be redesigned to improve the many shortcomings of the current design. The objectives of this project were met by redesigning the stock upper control arm, designing and manufacturing a weld fixture, manufacturing a prototype component, and performing a cost analysis. This component was designed to improve performance, reliability, serviceability and strength while maximizing manufacturability. This study analyzes and proposes Cardiac Staging nurse workflow improvements along with a new Cardiac Staging facility design at French Hospital. Currently, patients spend an expected 125 minutes in Cardiac Staging. It was found that 60% of the time in Cardiac Staging was spent waiting to be transferred into the Cath Lab. This project focuses on designing a computerized decision support system (DSS) to assist the Cal Poly Alumni Association with scheduling their Mustang Mentoring day. The current scheduling process is time intensive, error prone, and does not consider student preferences. The decision support system optimally generates multiple sets of pairs of students and mentors and schedules them avoiding conflicts and duplicates. The system was developed in Microsoft Excel using its Solver add-in. Excel was selected as the system platform also because of its relative popularity compared to alternative platforms. This project has two parts: [1] a migration and diffusivity model for candidate plastics used in containers, and [2] a product cost model for Westridge Laboratories (Santa Ana, CA).
Diffusion modeling is a useful tool to predict migration of polymer constituents into exposed liquids. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polylactic acid (PLA) were studied to estimate production costs, and component migration into water-based liquids from plastic containers. Bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), antimony trioxide, and stannous octoate, are components of concern in the three candidate polymers, respectively. Normal detection limits for these constituents are about 1 - 10 ppb, …

The purpose of this project was to evaluate the financial feasibility of implementing an automated gas injection system from Pulsair as an alternative to the traditional pump over cap mixing technique that is used during the alcoholic fermentation stage of winemaking.
There were various costs involved in this project that were determined and explained through the use of the partial budgeting method. Johanson Technology, a capacitor and microelectronic part manufacturer, located in Camarillo, CA has forecasted a 50% increase in demand for single layer capacitors for the year 2011. Johanson chose to hire an intern to design and implement a robotic pick and place system to meet this demand. A complete automated system composed of a Stäubli RS20 robotic arm, CS8C-M Controller, and Electrosort Bowl Feeder needed to be integrated into an environment where no system currently existed. In particular, the need for better workstations became evident when witnessing the cluttered appearance of the packing workbenches in the facility. Furthermore, one of Kaiser’s largest problem areas is the physical strain caused by the repetitive motion required of the packing job function. This senior project evaluates the measurement variation within a corrugated container bulge tester by utilizing a gauge repeatability and reproducibility study. Bulge is a type of deformation containers experience when subject to compressive forces such as stacking or internal forces due to under- and over-packaging. Both compressive and internal forces can accelerate the failure of a container by causing panels to flex and flutes to buckle, compromising structural integrity. Additionally, variable environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity can magnify the effect bulge has on a container, speeding up the failure rate of a container.

A non-contact angular measurement system for Pitch Static Attitude (PSA) and Roll Static Attitude (RSA) of hard disk drive sliders is designed and built. Real-time sampling at over 15 KHz is achieved with accuracy of +/- 0.05 degrees over a range of approximately 2-3 degrees. Measuring the PSA and RSA is critical for hard drive manufacturers to control and improve the quality and reliability of hard drives. Traffic and parking congestion are significant issues at many universities nationwide. This paper quantifies the amount of vehicle emissions generated during an average morning peak hour in the university environment. The purpose of this thesis is to model the effects of anti-price gouging (APG) legislation on the costs to businesses during the recovery period of a disaster. A system dynamics model of a business’s replenishment procedures is used to simulate the effects of APG legislation on business performance. Economists have published expansive research on the effects of price ceilings on supply and demand, but there is little research evidence on the operational consequences of price ceiling legislation on business costs.
