Hubble Space Telescope Systems Engineering Case Study, Air Force Center For Systems Engineering, James J. Mattice
Hubble Space Telescope Systems Engineering Case Study, Air Force Center For Systems Engineering, James J. Mattice
AFIT Documents
The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is an orbiting astronomical observatory operating in the spectrum from the near-infrared into the ultraviolet. Launched in 1990 and scheduled to operate through 2010, HST carries and has carried a wide variety of instruments producing imaging, spectrographic, astrometric, and photometric data through both pointed and parallel observing programs. Over 100,000 observations of more than 20,000 targets have been produced for retrieval. A macroscopic, cumulative representation of these observations is shown in the figure below to provide a sense of the enormous volume of astronomical data collected by the HST about our universe, our beginnings, and, …
C-5a Galaxy Systems Engineering Case Study, Air Force Center For Systems Engineering, John M. Griffin
C-5a Galaxy Systems Engineering Case Study, Air Force Center For Systems Engineering, John M. Griffin
AFIT Documents
The C-5 Systems Engineering Case Study captures the untold story of the application of systems engineering during the concept exploration, development, and production of the USAF C-5A and C-5B aircraft. The case study examines and dissects the systems engineering process as applied by the Air Force C-5 System Program Office and the prime contractor, Lockheed, Georgia, from the program s genesis in 1957 to the last delivery of the C-5A and the beginning of the C-5B program in 1973. Numerous interviews were conducted with the principals who managed and directed the program and a story of the systems engineering process …
A Systematic Approach For Securing Our Space Assets, Heather Yates, Michael R. Grimaila
A Systematic Approach For Securing Our Space Assets, Heather Yates, Michael R. Grimaila
Faculty Publications
We are surrounded by the use of space assets, but for the most part are unaware of their impact on our lives. On a daily basis, space assets contribute to our well-being and others around the world. Space activities have enhanced security, monitored the environment, improved and increased information growth and flow, created economic growth, and changed the way people around the world live and work.[1] Since the 1991 Gulf War, we have also come to understand how much the US military depends on space. Military forces use satellite information for communications, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, warning, weather, navigation, and timing. …

F-111 Systems Engineering Case Study, Air Force Center For Systems Engineering, G. Keith Richey
F-111 Systems Engineering Case Study, Air Force Center For Systems Engineering, G. Keith Richey
AFIT Documents
The systems engineering lessons from the F-111 program will facilitate learning by emphasizing practical applications and resulting outcomes to the current processes and tools used on today s programs. The student will understand the long-term consequences of systems engineering as implemented on the F-111 and its effect on cost, schedule, and operational effectiveness. The reader can then postulate outcomes of alternate decisions at the program/system level.
Theater Battle Management Core System Systems Engineering Case Study, Air Force Center For Systems Engineering, Josiah R. Collens Jr., Bob Krause
Theater Battle Management Core System Systems Engineering Case Study, Air Force Center For Systems Engineering, Josiah R. Collens Jr., Bob Krause
AFIT Documents
The Theater Battle Management Core System (TBMCS) is an integrated air command and control (C2) system that performs standardized, secure, automated air battle planning and execution management for Air Force, multi-service, and allied commanders in theaters of operation worldwide. TBMCS provides the means to plan, direct, and control all theater air operations and to coordinate with land, maritime, and special operations elements. It is deployed at C2 nodes at national, force and wing/unit-level elements. TBMCS operates in support of planners and decision makers at, and below, the level of Joint Force Air Component Commander. The system is modular and scalable …
Academic Audit Of Afit Programs In Systems Engineering, United States Air Force Scientific Advisory Board
Academic Audit Of Afit Programs In Systems Engineering, United States Air Force Scientific Advisory Board
AFIT Documents
This report provides an assessment and recommendations for the systems engineering educational programs at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT). The Air Force needs in systems engineering education are briefly summarized, followed by an analysis of the educational program at AFIT. Based on the assessment of AFIT's program, a set of recommendations are given for improving the programs and their utility to the Air Force. Appendices to the report contain additional information on the AFIT programs and an assessment of other graduate systems engineering programs in the US.
