Radioactive Waste, Andrii Ligun, Nazifa Afroz Dec 2023

Radioactive Waste, Andrii Ligun, Nazifa Afroz

Featured Student Work

The Technical Report addresses the critical issue of nuclear waste management, exploring its sources, challenges, and potential solutions. The report delves into the current state of nuclear waste disposal technologies, emphasizing the need for sustainable and secure practices. Important subjects include the classification of radioactive waste, the consequences of inappropriate disposal for the environment, and an assessment of current disposal techniques. The paper also addresses new disposal techniques and policy issues for the responsible and safe management of radioactive waste. The results highlight the significance of a comprehensive strategy for managing radioactive waste that strikes a balance between public involvement, …

The U.S. Nuclear Waste Impasse: Transportation Implications, Robin M. Rotman, Michael F. Mcbride Jan 2018

The U.S. Nuclear Waste Impasse: Transportation Implications, Robin M. Rotman, Michael F. Mcbride

Faculty Publications

For several years there has been an impasse, in the political branches, over how to make progress on dealing with the intractable problem of nuclear waste disposal in the United States. Currently, over 120 sites, spread across 39 states, host commercial spent fuel—many of these sites are former reactors that have become de facto interim nuclear waste storage sites, pending a permanent solution. Transportation considerations are central in this discussion. With the potential for Congress to make progress on this issue following the 2018 midterm elections, this article reviews the potential paths forward and considers possible implications for the transportation …

Criticality Studies Of Actinides Within Fissures, Trevor Wilcox Jan 2009

Criticality Studies Of Actinides Within Fissures, Trevor Wilcox

The storage of nuclear waste in underground storage facilities presents numerous engineering challenges and risks. Experimental verification of engineered underground storage is impractical or prohibitively expensive, leaving scientists with few options. A 1995 report by Bowman and Venneri of the Los Alamos National Laboratory generated considerable controversy by hypothesizing that wastes composed of fissionable plutonium leached from underground storage containers could pose a nuclear criticality hazard. They proposed cases where plutonium collected in underground fractures could lead to sustained nuclear fission. In overmoderated cases, they argued that the resulting release of energy from fission could result in steam explosions, or …

Examining Recent Expert Elicitation Judgment Guidelines: Value Assumptions And The Prospects For Rationality, Patricia Fleming Mar 2001

Examining Recent Expert Elicitation Judgment Guidelines: Value Assumptions And The Prospects For Rationality, Patricia Fleming

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

This paper was presented at the VALDOR Symposium, Stockholm, June 1999. The author examines the value assumptions in the U.S. Department of Energy and Nuclear Regulatory Commission guidance on the use of expert judgment relating to high level nuclear waste disposal site selection.
