Silicon Oxynitride: A Field Emission Suppression Coating, Nimel D. Theodore
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
We have studied coatings deposited using our inductively-coupled RF plasma ion implantation and desposition system to suppress field emission from large, 3-D electrode structures used in high voltage applications, like those used by Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in their DC-field photoelectron gun. Currently time and labor-intensive hand-polishing procedures are used to minimize field emission from these structures. Previous work had shown that the field emission from polished stainless steel (27 muA of field-emitted current at 15 MV/m) could be drastically reduced with simultaneous deposition of sputtered silicon dioxide during nitrogen implantation (167 pA of field-emitted current at 30 MV/m). …

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Theoretical calculations were performed for the propagation and interactions of particles having high atomic numbers and energy through diverse shield materials including polymeric materials and epoxy-bound lunar regolith by using transport codes for laboratory ion beams and the cosmic ray spectrum. Heavy ions fragment and lose energy upon interactions with shielding materials of specified elemental composition, density, and thickness. A fragmenting heavy iron ion produces hundreds of isotopes during nuclear reactions, which are treated in the solution of the transport problem used here. A reduced set of 80 isotopes is sufficient to represent the charge distribution, but a minimum of …
Magnetic Field Strength Of Toroidal Plasma Equilibria, David Alan Garren
Magnetic Field Strength Of Toroidal Plasma Equilibria, David Alan Garren
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The goal of nuclear fusion research is to confine a deuterium-tritium plasma at a sufficiently high temperature (15 keV) and density (3 $\times$ 10$\sp{20}$ m$\sp{-3}$) for a sufficient length of time (1 sec) to produce net fusion power. One means to attain the required plasma confinement is to embed the plasma within a magnetic field. The global structure of this magnetic field determines the variation of magnetic field strength within the surfaces of constant plasma pressure. This field strength variation in turn determines many of the stability and confinement properties of the plasma. This dissertation gives the first detailed exposition …
