The design and performance of a compact autonomous completely explosive pulsed power system based on two physical effects, the transverse shock wave demagnetization of Nd2Fe14B high-energy hard ferromagnets and magnetic flux compression, are presented. A transverse shock wave ferromagnetic generator (FMG) served as a seed source, and a compact helical magnetic flux compression generator (FCG) was used as a pulsed power amplifier. Results of a theoretical and experimental study demonstrated reliable operation of the proposed FMG-FCG system. The methodology for analytical calculation of seed current amplitude is developed.

Over the past fifteen years there has been significant interest in the concepts of sustainable development and mining. Many governments, mining con~panies and non-government organizations have embraced the concepts of sustainable development. One concept generated from the ideas stemming from sustainable mining is that of 'green gold'. Similar to sustainable mining, green gold's meaning is defined by the originator.

The February 2001 eruption of Cleveland Volcano, Alaska allowed for comparisons of volcanic ash detection using two-band thermal infrared (10–12 μm) remote sensing from MODIS, AVHRR, and GOES 10. Results show that high latitude GOES volcanic cloud sensing the range of about 50 to 65°N is significantly enhanced. For the Cleveland volcanic clouds the MODIS and AVHRR data have zenith angles 6–65 degrees and the GOES has zenith angles that are around 70 degrees. The enhancements are explained by distortion in the satellite view of the cloud's lateral extent because the satellite zenith angles result in a “side-looking” aspect and …

The existence of excessive soil compaction has hindered the surface mining industry from returning land to pre−mining productivity after reclamation, especially on prime farmland soils. Heavy earthmoving equipment used during reclamation tends to generate root−limiting bulk densities that adversely affect plant growth thereby decreasing yields. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate a mechanism, called the ‘Soil Regenerator,’ which reconstructs soil media at minimum bulk density during surface mine reclamation. A new PET detector block has been designed to replace the standard detector of the Discovery ST PET/CT system. The new detector block is the same size as the original, but consists of an 8/spl times/6 (tangential× axial) matrix of crystals rather than the original 6/spl times/6. The new crystal dimensions are 4.7× 6.3× 30 mm/sup 3/ (tangential× axial× radial). Full PET/CT systems have been built with these detectors (Discovery STE). Most other aspects of the system are identical to the standard Discovery ST, with differences including the low energy threshold for 3D imaging (now 425 keV) and front-end electronics. …

To investigate the relationship between NEC and image quality to 2D and 3D PET, while simultaneously optimizing 3D low energy threshold (LET), we have performed a series of phantom measurements. The phantom consisted of 46 1 cm fillable hollow spheres on a random grid inside a water-filled oval cylinder, 21 cm tall, 36 cm wide, and 40 cm long. The phantom was imaged on a Discovery ST PET/CT system (GE Healthcare, Milwaukee, WI) in a series of 3 min scans as it decayed from an activity of 7.2 mCi. An investigation of the optimum 3D lower energy threshold (LET) setting of the Discovery-RX, a new LYSO based GE research PET/CT scanner is conducted. Sensitivity and noise equivalent count rate (NECR) performance of the scanner in 3D mode were evaluated at multiple LET settings: 400, 425, 450, 460, 470 and 480 KeV. The performance evaluations were conducted according to the NEMA NU2-2001 standard. In addition, the NECR was also evaluated for the same LET settings using the Data Spectrum whole body phantom in order to more accurately simulate a true clinical setting. Results of the investigation of the operation of explosive-driven high-voltage shock wave ferromagnetic generators (FMGs) in the open circuit and charging modes are presented. FMGs are based on the transverse (when the shock wave propagates across the magnetization vector M) shock demagnetization of Nd2Fe14B hard ferromagnetic energy-carrying elements of diameter 2.22 cm and length 2.54 cm (volume 8.5 cm3). In the charging mode the capacitance of capacitor banks compatt was varied from 18 to 36 nF. The energy transferred to the capacitor bank reached 0.38 J. FMGs provided pulsed powers of 35-45 kW in times ranging from 10 to 15 …

A poled lead zirconate titanate Pb(Zr52Ti48)O3 polycrystalline piezoelectric ceramic energy-carrying element of a compact explosive-driven pulsed power generator was depolarized by an explosive shock wave traveling along the polarization vector P0. We show that shock wave compression of a ferroelectric energy-carrying element at pressures of 1.5-3.8 GPa caused almost complete depolarization of the sample. The shock wave velocity in the Pb(Zr52Ti48)O3 was determined to be 3.94 ± 0.27 km/s. The electric charge stored in the ferroelectrics, due to their remnant polarization, is released during a short time interval, and can be transformed into pulsed power. Results of the investigation of the operation of autonomous ultracompact explosive-driven high-voltage primary power sources based on longitudinal (when the shock wave propagates along the polarization vector P0) shock wave depolarization of ferroelectric materials in the open circuit and charging modes are presented. The energy-carrying elements of shock wave ferroelectric generators (FEGs) were poled lead zirconate titanate (PZT) Pb(Zr52Ti48)O3 polycrystalline piezoelectric ceramic disks with volume 0.35 cm3.
