The very nature of continuous fiber composite materials, with their heterogeneous structure of layered and interwoven fibers bound together by a polymer resin matrix, lead to an inevitable variability in mechanical properties. This is especially true if the fabrication process is not well controlled. Unlike fabricating components with metals, where the properties of the material are known beforehand, the final properties of the composite material are determined during the process of fabricating the composite part. Alternative energy technologies are on the forefront of research due to the rising costs of oil and natural gas. One relatively under development source of energy is ocean waves. In order to make the use of ocean waves economically viable, the amount of energy absorbed by wave energy converters (WEC) must be optimized. Predicting the resistance of a high-speed monohull has been of interest to Naval Architects for several decades. Even though considerable amount of research has been carried out in this area, there remains a degree of uncertainty in the accurate resistance prediction in the early design stage. This thesis work started as an attempt to create a computational tool to model hydrodynamics problems involving lifting flows. The method employed to solve the problem is potential flow theory.

Despite the fast evolution of computers and the latest developments in Navier-Stokes solvers, such as the Ranse methods; potential flow theory offers the possibility to create or use existing computational tools, which allow us modeling hydrodynamics problems in a simpler manner. Navier-Stokes solver can be very expensive from the computational point of view, and require a high level of expertise in order to achieve reliable models.

In this thesis, new methods for shear strength are proposed and backed up through extensive experimentation, ABAQUS models and data analysis of Titanium welds of three different alloys. The results are compared with those obtained by using the procedure outlined by AWS B4 for calculating Shear Strength in the transverse and longitudinal directions; this equation is widely used by the American Welding Society (AWS) and all those in search of more efficient designs involving welding.

Better understandings of a storm's potential forces ultimately lead engineers to safer designs and minimize the damages. A turbine generator is a device that converts mechanical rotation into electrical energy. Unfortunately, the primary driving force that has been used to provide this rotation has, thus far, been fossil fuels. Although fossil fuels have proven to be a reliable resource to continually supply the growing demand for electrical power, they are not without their financial and environmental drawbacks.
