In this dissertation, we study the boundary of stability of a class of linear mechanical systems as a function of a parameter. We consider two different systems under this class: a constrained double pendulum connected by a rigid rod and a state-feedback-controlled mechanical system with time delay. In the first system, the destabilizing parameter is the distance between the supports of the two pendulums. In the second system, the destabilizing parameter is the time delay. In the constrained double pendulum system, linear perturbation analysis is used to determine the natural frequency of the system. Our analysis reveals a zone of …

In this thesis we start with an introduction to the theory of vibration control. We broadly classify the control methods into passive and active schemes. We introduce the problem of state feedback control and provide the classical solution in the form of Ackermann formula. We then identify the limitations of the classical approach and present the more elegant solution of partial pole assignment without spillover. We highlight the problem with model uncertainties and describe the method of pole assignment using data from measured receptances. On The Stability Of Rotor Bearing Systems Based On Hopf Bifurcation Theory, Jianke Wang

This research is aimed to establish instability criteria for a rotor-bearing system which consists of a rotor supported by two fluid-film journal bearings. The static and dynamic characteristics of rotor-bearing systems with consideration of turbulent effects are evaluated by applying the Hopf bifurcation theory (HBT) to the equations of motion. A method is developed for predicting the stability envelope of rotor-bearing systems using HBT. Results are compared with published literature obtained using a trial-and-error method.
