A Survey Of Smart Manufacturing For High-Mix Low-Volume Production In Defense And Aerospace Industries, Tanjida Tahmina, Mauro Garcia, Zhaohui Geng, Bopaya Bidanda Oct 2022

A Survey Of Smart Manufacturing For High-Mix Low-Volume Production In Defense And Aerospace Industries, Tanjida Tahmina, Mauro Garcia, Zhaohui Geng, Bopaya Bidanda

Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Defense and aerospace industries usually possess unique high-mix low-volume production characteristics. This uniqueness generally calls for prohibitive production costs and long production lead-time. One of the major trends in advanced, smart manufacturing is to be more responsive and better readiness while ensuring the same or higher production quality and lower cost. This study reviews the state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies to solve these issues and previews two levels of flexibility, i.e., system and process, that could potentially reduce the costs while increasing the production volume in such a scenario. The main contribution of the work includes an assessment of the current solutions …

A Study Of The Design And Manufacturing Of An Elevated Dog Feeder, Lena Turner Apr 2020

A Study Of The Design And Manufacturing Of An Elevated Dog Feeder, Lena Turner

Honors Theses

ABSTRACT

The senior capstone which students in the Center for Manufacturing Excellence program partake in was the basis for project. The Dog Box is an elevated dog feeder with an internal food storage compartment. It was designed for medium to large dogs, and can hold over 40 lbs of dog food. The internal storage compartment has drawer access and contains a plastic tote that will hold the food. The purpose of the design was to create an aesthetically pleasing elevated dog feeder that would double as a storage device, and elevated feeding can help prevent health issues in large dog …

Inspection Process Flow Development For A Warehouse, Pahalawaththage Perera Jan 2018

Inspection Process Flow Development For A Warehouse, Pahalawaththage Perera

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The project is based on a medical device outsourcing company in the US. In 2018 the company added a 44,000 sq ft new warehouse. With the scales of growth and market competition, it has come to a need to optimize production capacity to achieve 98% monthly on time delivery target. Optimizing production capacity comes with efficiently managing operations that impact overall product lead time. A primary factor that impacts the overall product lead time is production preparation time. Production preparation time is impacted by lead times of 3 operations managed by the new warehouse - Receiving Inspection, Incoming Inspection, and …

Lean Implementation Through Process Automation, Olusola Onadipe Jr. Jan 2017

Lean Implementation Through Process Automation, Olusola Onadipe Jr.

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

As lean manufacturing is increasingly becoming a common practice today in an effort to keep companies competitive, new and innovative processes are becoming the norm. Part of that innovation includes the development of automated machinery that can help alleviate some struggles with lead times and reduce overall labor. It is all in keeping with the trend of building products cheaper and faster to gain that edge. Company X has been focusing their efforts on lean manufacturing for years now. This paper covers an important project that involves the implementation of a complex mechanical system in an effort to build products …

Process Improvement By Lean Thinking In Trucking Industry, Abhiram Reddy Ramasahayam Jan 2016

Process Improvement By Lean Thinking In Trucking Industry, Abhiram Reddy Ramasahayam

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Manufacturing industries with complex production systems are struggling with designing optimal process to increase throughput. Companies will require high amount of labor and process improvement resources to sustain growth and delivery quality products to its customers. A chain of value added activities when designed and deployed with help of lean based methodologies can create high efficiency process. In this paper we have studies and implemented value added process based on the lean manufacturing methodologies which was adapted on the shop floor.

In many traditional truck body production industries have facing many problems like low production rate, big lead times, material …

The Sustainability Of Lean Manufacturing As A Competitive Advantage, Louis G. Jones Jul 2013

The Sustainability Of Lean Manufacturing As A Competitive Advantage, Louis G. Jones

Theses and Dissertations

Since the early 1990s lean manufacturing has been employed by companies looking to reduce costs, increase efficiencies and improve quality. Academic studies of the financial benefits of lean manufacturing are mixed in their results, where some show benefit and others do not. The objective of the current work was to confirm a financial benefit of lean manufacturing, while also establishing whether such a financial advantage was sustainable. Financial data was collected for a large number of companies in the manufacturing sector, over the period from 1990 to 2010. The data were used to show correlation between inventory turns and return …

Evaluation Of Lean Systems In Rail Maintenance Operations, Mert Baykut Jan 2011

Evaluation Of Lean Systems In Rail Maintenance Operations, Mert Baykut

ETD Archive

The recognized strength of lean systems is its broad applicability to every process industry even though they include some complicated and time-intensive processes. However, this conception is based on the tools and philosophy of Lean systems and the nature of the industry. The required craftsmanship and repetitive processes in rail maintenance define the uniqueness of this research The objective of this thesis was to research the opportunities and applicability for lean systems in rail maintenance. During the research a unique system, consisting of Lean systems and systems engineering tools, is realized and tried to integrate instead of a pure Lean …
