Model Of Surface Waves On A Viscoelastic Material In A Cylindrical Container With Edge Constraints, Phillip Wilson Dec 2023

Model Of Surface Waves On A Viscoelastic Material In A Cylindrical Container With Edge Constraints, Phillip Wilson

All Theses

A theoretical model is developed for the resonant frequencies and mode shapes of pinned edge surface waves on a viscoelastic fluid contained in a finite depth cylindrical container. A boundary integral approach is used to map the governing equations to the domain boundary. The surface waves obey an eigenvalue operator equation that depends on four dimensionless parameters: the cylinder aspect ratio, the Bond number, the Ohnesorge number, and the elastocapillary number. A solution is constructed using a Rayleigh-Ritz variational procedure over a constrained function space, which is able to effectively incorporate the pinned edge boundary condition. Mode shapes are defined …

Wave Propagation In Metamaterial Using Multiscale Resonators By Creating Local Anisotropy, Raiz U. Ahmed, Sourav Banerjee

Faculty Publications

Directional guiding, passing or stopping of elastic waves through engineered materials have many applications to the engineering fields. Recently, such engineered composite materials received great attention by the broader research community. In elastic waves, the longitudinal and transverse motion of material particles are coupled, which exhibits richer physics and demands greater attention than electromagnetic waves and acoustic waves in fluids. Waves in periodic media exhibit the property of Bragg scattering and create frequency band gaps in which the energy propagation is prohibited. However, in addition to the Bragg scattering, it has been found that local resonance of artificially designed resonators …

An Experimental Investigation Of Guided Wave Propagation In Corrugated Plates Showing Stop Bands And Pass Bands, Tribikram Kundu, Sourav Banerjee, Kumar V. Jata Jan 2006

An Experimental Investigation Of Guided Wave Propagation In Corrugated Plates Showing Stop Bands And Pass Bands, Tribikram Kundu, Sourav Banerjee, Kumar V. Jata

Nonplanar surfaces are often encountered in engineering structures. In aerospace structures, periodically corrugated boundaries are formed by friction-stir-welding. In civil engineering structures, rebars used in reinforced concrete beams and slabs have periodic surface. Periodic structures are also being used to create desired acoustic band gaps. For health monitoring of these structures, a good understanding of the elastic wave propagation through such periodic structures is necessary. Although a number of research papers on the wave propagation in periodic structures are available in the literature, no one experimentally investigated the guided wave propagation through plates with periodic boundaries and compared the experimental …

Optimization Of A Multi-Aixs Electro-Mechanical Scanning System., Raul Urbina Jan 2001

Optimization Of A Multi-Aixs Electro-Mechanical Scanning System., Raul Urbina

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents efforts to enhance the system performance of an ultrasonic scanning machine. New developments in electronics are used to enhance the system performance. This work focuses on optimizing the system repeatability with a robust triggering system for the scanner. The robust triggering system applies new advances in programmable logic devices that make the replacement of complicated digital circuits possible. Modeling of wave propagation through anisotropic media is used to increase the system dynamic range. The model-based gain control compensates for variations in thickness and materials by controlling the excitation pulse amplitude. The automatic gain is implemented using integrated …
