Impact Of Material And Tunnel Barrier Quality On Spin Transport In A Cvd Graphene Non-Local Spin Valve Device Array, Samuel T. Olson, Daniel Still, Kaleb Hood, Otto Zietz, Jun Jiao

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Wafer-scale graphene films produced via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) are now commercially available, however these films inherently contain randomly distributed defects such as adlayers and grain boundaries. This report discusses the impact of these defects on the signal integrity of an array of graphene-based non-local spin valves (NLSVs). It was found that critical spin parameters fluctuate drastically between adjacent identical devices. Investigation of the channel quality indicated that adlayers do not affect spin signal significantly even when located directly in the spin transport region of the device. In contrast, grain boundary defects within the spin transport region have significant impact …

The Effects Of Carbon Coating On The Electrochemical Performance Of Metal-Oxide Short Fiber Anodes For Lithium-Ion Batteries, David A. Sanchez May 2023

The Effects Of Carbon Coating On The Electrochemical Performance Of Metal-Oxide Short Fiber Anodes For Lithium-Ion Batteries, David A. Sanchez

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on the process of oxidizing centrifugally spun precursor fibers and the subsequent process of carbon coating via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) for use as anode material in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Metal oxides have been studied as a potential replacement for graphite as they have been shown to have high theoretical capacities, good electronic conductivity, and can be synthesized using low-cost, scalable methods. However, metal oxides with high theoretical capacities also have low cycle life. To avoid this, metal oxides have been integrated with carbon to expand their life cycle. The work in this thesis shows the synthesis …

Vertically aligned carbon nanotube array (VANTA) coatings have recently garnered much attention due in part to their unique material properties including light absorption, chemical inertness, and electrical conductivity. Herein we report the first use of VANTAs grown via chemical vapor deposition in a 2D interdigitated electrode (IDE) footprint with a high height-to-width aspect ratio (3:1 or 75:25 µm). The VANTA-IDE is functionalized with an antibody (Ab) specific to the human cancerous inhibitor PP2A (CIP2A)—a alivary oncoprotein that is associated with a variety of malignancies such as oral, breast, and multiple myeloma cancers. The resultant immunosensor is capable of detecting CIP2A …

Measuring The Double Layer Capacitance Of Electrolyte Solutions Using A Graphene Field Effect Transistor, Agatha Ulibarri May 2018

Measuring The Double Layer Capacitance Of Electrolyte Solutions Using A Graphene Field Effect Transistor, Agatha Ulibarri

Senior Theses

When operating graphene field effect transistors (GFETs) in fluid, a double layer capacitance (Cdl) is formed at the surface. In the literature, the Cdl is estimated using values obtained using metal electrode experiments. Due to the distinctive electronic and surface properties of graphene, there is reason to believe these estimates are inadequate. This work seeks to directly characterize the double layer capacitance of a GFET. A unique method for determining the Cdl has been implemented, and data has been obtained for three electrolytes and one ionic fluid. The results yield dramatically lower Cdl values than …

Modeling Of A Roll-To-Roll Plasma Cvd System For Graphene, Yudong Chen, Majed A. Alrefae, Anurag Kumar, Timothy S. Fisher Aug 2016

Modeling Of A Roll-To-Roll Plasma Cvd System For Graphene, Yudong Chen, Majed A. Alrefae, Anurag Kumar, Timothy S. Fisher

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Graphene is a 2D carbon material that has extraordinary physical properties relevant to many industrial applications such as electronics, oxidation barrier and biosensors. Roll-to-roll plasma chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has been developed to manufacture graphene at large scale. In a plasma CVD chamber, graphene is grown on a copper foil as it passes through a high-temperature plasma region. The temperatures of the gas and the copper foil play important roles in the growth of graphene. Consequently, there is a need to understand the temperature and gas velocity distributions in the system. The heat generated in the plasma creates a thermal …

Laser Direct Written Silicon Nanowires For Electronic And Sensing Applications, Woongsik Nam Aug 2016

Laser Direct Written Silicon Nanowires For Electronic And Sensing Applications, Woongsik Nam

Open Access Dissertations

Silicon nanowires are promising building blocks for high-performance electronics and chemical/biological sensing devices due to their ultra-small body and high surface-to-volume ratios. However, the lack of the ability to assemble and position nanowires in a highly controlled manner still remains an obstacle to fully exploiting the substantial potential of nanowires. Here we demonstrate a one-step method to synthesize intrinsic and doped silicon nanowires for device applications. Sub-diffraction limited nanowires as thin as 60 nm are synthesized using laser direct writing in combination with chemical vapor deposition, which has the advantages of in-situ doping, catalyst-free growth, and precise control of position, …

Evaluation Techniques And Improvements Of Adhesion Strength For Tin Coating In Tool Applications: A Review Apr 2015

Evaluation Techniques And Improvements Of Adhesion Strength For Tin Coating In Tool Applications: A Review

Faculty of Engineering University of Malaya

The adhesion between coating-substrate systems is an important factor in determining the performance and durability of coated engineering components. This paper reviews the microstructures and adhesion strength of titanium nitride (TiN) coating produced using two different processing methods: chemical vapor deposition and physical vapor deposition. Three methods to evaluate the adhesion strength of the coatings, namely the indentation test, laser spallation technique, and scratch test are presented and discussed in terms of their working principles, their advantages and disadvantages. The extrinsic and intrinsic factors influencing the adhesion strength of coating-substrate system, particularly for TiN coating, are also elaborated. The mechanisms …

Intrinsic Stress And High Temperature Properties Of Metal-Contanining Hydrogenated Amorphous Carbon Coatings, Bo Shi Jan 2005

Intrinsic Stress And High Temperature Properties Of Metal-Contanining Hydrogenated Amorphous Carbon Coatings, Bo Shi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A detailed examination of the intrinsic stress development and mechanical properties of titanium-containing hydrogenated amorphous carbon (Ti-C:H) and W-C:H coatings, deposited in an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) assisted hybrid chemical/physical vapor deposition (CVD/PVD) environment was carried out. Intrinsic stresses within those coatings were found to be compressive and dependent on compositions. The intrinsic compression within Ti-C:H was further shown to be significantly influenced by the energy of ionic species bombarding the substrate during growth. The results suggested that ion bombardment played a significant role in intrinsic stress generation within Ti-C:H, and was likely to influence stress development in other low …

Characterization Of The Si/Sio2 Interface Formed By Remote Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition From Sih4/N2O With Or Without Chlorine Addition, Young-Bae Park, Xiaodong Li, Shi-Woo Rhee

Faculty Publications

The Si/SiO2interface formed by remote plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (RPECVD) at low temperature with SiH4/N2O or SiH4/N2O/Cl2 was studied and compared with thermal oxidation. The interface of the CVD SiO2 without chlorine addition is rougher than that with chlorine addition. But the surface roughness of CVD SiO2 films increases with chlorine addition. The thermal oxidation induces strong interface strains, and the strains generated by the CVD SiO2 without chlorine addition are stronger and are distributed more nonuniformly than those by the chlorinated SiO2. …

Microstructure And Deposition Rate Of Aluminum Thin Films From Chemical Vapor Deposition With Dimethylethylamine Alane, Byoung-Youp Kim, Xiaodong Li, Shi-Woo Rhee

Faculty Publications

Deposition of aluminumfilm from DMEAA in the temperature range of 100–300 °C has been studied. In this temperature range, there is a maximum deposition rate at around 150 °C. The film deposited at 190 °C has elongated blocklike grain shapes, which are ∼600 nm in width and 930 nm in length. Grains in the film deposited at 150 °C showed an equiaxed structure with grain size in the range of 100–300 nm in a film with 600 nm thickness. Aluminum oxide particle inclusion was observed especially at high deposition temperature. Plausible reaction pathways of DMEAA dissociation were suggested to explain …
