Today, it is significant that the use of additive manufacturing (AM) has growing in almost every aspect of the daily life. A high number of sectors are adapting and implementing this revolutionary production technology in their domain to increase production volumes, reduce the cost of production, fabricate light weight and complex parts in a short period of time, and respond to the manufacturing needs of customers. It is clear that the AM technologies consume energy to complete the production tasks of each part. Therefore, it is imperative to know the impact of energy efficiency in order to economically and properly …

Fusion Bonding Behavior Of 3d Printed Pa6/Cf Composites Via Post Fabrication Compaction, Gonzalo Fernandez Mediavilla May 2023

Fusion Bonding Behavior Of 3d Printed Pa6/Cf Composites Via Post Fabrication Compaction, Gonzalo Fernandez Mediavilla

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Additive manufacturing (AM) is becoming a robust production technology for aerospace, healthcare, and construction industries among others. Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) is one of the methods most used to 3D print products. FDM has limitation due to interlayer adhesion and restriction imposed by the printing direction. Specially with AM composites, as reinforced nylon PA6 with short fibers, parts show more strength along the direction of the filament due to the alignment of the carbon fibers, but weaker in other directions. The proposed method to solve this issue is to print parts separately and join them together by fusion bonding. PA6/CF …

The employment of additive manufacturing in the non-standard environments like space, ships, or submarines has the potential to be an advanced utility not only in the pre-flight production of aerospace components and structures, but also for the onboard manufacturing of components and tools necessary for future space missions. For example, the ability to produce tools and structural components on the International Space Station can provide the space community the opportunity to make repairs and upgrades to the space station without wasting time and resources transporting such materials through additional missions. Additive manufacturing would allow for space missions to use on …

Post-Processing And Characterization Of Additive Manufactured Carbon Fiber Reinforced Semi-Crystalline Polymers, Patricia Revolinsky Dec 2021

Post-Processing And Characterization Of Additive Manufactured Carbon Fiber Reinforced Semi-Crystalline Polymers, Patricia Revolinsky

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The aim of this work is to study the effect of post-processing on additive manufactured (AM) continuous carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs) performance. As-printed AM CFRPs do not perform as well as conventionally manufactured CFRPs with the same composition. Possible improvements to AM CFRP performance include annealing and applying uniaxial pressure with elevated temperature. Samples were subjected to pressure and temperature treatments and annealing at a constant temperature. Treated materials were subjected to three-point bending tests, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to characterize and assess sample performance. Results were assessed for flexural strength, …

The Effect Of Compaction Temperature And Pressure On Mechanical Properties Of 3d Printed Short Glass Fiber Composites, Pushpashree Jain Ajith Kumar Jain Dec 2020

The Effect Of Compaction Temperature And Pressure On Mechanical Properties Of 3d Printed Short Glass Fiber Composites, Pushpashree Jain Ajith Kumar Jain

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Among many thermoplastics that are used in engineering, polyamide 6 (nylon 6) is an extremely versatile engineering thermoplastic. Nylon filled with glass fibers has higher mechanical strength and high wear resistance than general purpose nylon. 3D printed composites, based on fused filament modeling, typically suffer from poor bead-to-bead bonding and relatively high void content, limiting their mechanical properties

This thesis explores the effect of compaction pressure and temperature on improving the mechanical properties of 3D printed composites. Engineering moduli in the printing and transverse to printing direction, as well as ultimate strength were measured using the tensile testing with Digital …

Parametric Study Of Residual Stresses In Wire And Arc Additive Manufactured Parts, Hisham Khaled Jamil Abusalma Dec 2020

Parametric Study Of Residual Stresses In Wire And Arc Additive Manufactured Parts, Hisham Khaled Jamil Abusalma

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Wire and Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) is a cost-effective additive manufacturing process due to its capability to fabricate large metal parts with high deposition rate and low equipment cost. Although this method is gaining popularity in manufacturing industry, more research is needed to understand process parameters’ effects on residual stress (RS) distribution and part distortion. As such, a 3D thermo-elastic-plastic transient model was established in ABAQUS and employed to investigate the effect of process parameters such as the torch speed, the deposition power and the interlayer dwell time on RS distribution and distortion in WAAM part. The numerical model utilized …

Development Of The Compact Jet Engine Simulator From Concept To Useful Test Rig, Henry H. Haskin Jul 2016

Development Of The Compact Jet Engine Simulator From Concept To Useful Test Rig, Henry H. Haskin

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Two Compact Jet Engine Simulator (CJES) units were designed for integrated wind tunnel acoustic experiments involving a Hybrid Wing Body (HWB) vehicle. To meet the 5.8% scale of the HWB model, Ultra Compact Combustor technology from the Air Force Research Laboratory was used. The CJES units were built and integrated with a control system in the NASA Langley Low Speed Aero acoustic Wind Tunnel. The combustor liners, plug—vane and flow conditioner components were built in-house at Langley Research Center. The operation of the CJES units was mapped and fixes found for combustor instability tones and rig flow noise. The original …
