Simulation And Validation Of Two-Component Flow In A Void Recirculation System, Oscar Eduardo Daza May 2011

Simulation And Validation Of Two-Component Flow In A Void Recirculation System, Oscar Eduardo Daza

Master's Theses

Nuclear power plants rely on the Emergency Core Cooling System (ECCS) to cool down the reactor core in case of an accident. Occasionally, air is entrained into the suction piping of ECCS causing voids that decrease pumping efficiency, and consequently damage the pumps. In an attempt to minimize the amount of voids entering the suction side of the pump in ECCS, a Void Recirculation System (VRS) experiment was conducted for a proof of concept purpose. While many studies have been oriented in studying two-component flow behavior in ECCS, none of them propose a solution to minimize air entrainment. As a …

Evaluation Of Transient Refrigerant Migration Modeling Approach On Automotive Air Conditioning Systems, Bin Li, Steffen Peuker, Pega Hrnjak, Andrew Alleyne Apr 2011

Evaluation Of Transient Refrigerant Migration Modeling Approach On Automotive Air Conditioning Systems, Bin Li, Steffen Peuker, Pega Hrnjak, Andrew Alleyne

Mechanical Engineering

Automotive air conditioning systems are subject to constantly changing operation conditions and steady state simulations are not sufficient to describe the actual performance. The refrigerant mass migration during transient events such as clutch-cycling or start-up bas a direct impact on the transient performance. It is therefore necessary to develop simulation tools which can accurately predict the migration of the rerrigerant mass. To this end a dynamic model of an automotive air conditioning system is presented in this paper using a switched modeling framework. Model validation against experimental results demonstrates that the developed modeling approach is able to describe the transient …

Effect Of Gold Content On The Reliability Of Snagcu Solder Joints, Jianbiao Pan, Julie Silk, Mike Powers, Patrick Hyland Apr 2011

Effect Of Gold Content On The Reliability Of Snagcu Solder Joints, Jianbiao Pan, Julie Silk, Mike Powers, Patrick Hyland

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Electroplated Ni/Au over Cu is a popular metallization for PCB finish as well as for component leads, especially wire-bondable high frequency packages, where the gold thickness requirement for wirebonding is high. The general understanding is that less than 3 wt% of Au is acceptable in SnPb solder joints. However, little is known about the effect of Au content on the reliability of SnAgCu solder joints. The purpose of this study is to determine the acceptable level of Au in SAC305 solder joints. Three different package platforms with different Au thicknesses were assembled on boards with two different Au thicknesses using …

Geomagnetic Compensation For Low-Cost Crash Avoidance Project, John C. Torres Apr 2011

Geomagnetic Compensation For Low-Cost Crash Avoidance Project, John C. Torres

Master's Theses

The goal of this work was to compensate for the effects of the Earth’s magnetic field in a vector field magnetic sensor. The magnetic sensor is a part of a low-cost crash avoidance system by Stephane Roussel where the magnetic sensor was used to detect cars passing when it was mounted to a test vehicle. However, the magnetic sensor’s output voltage varied when it changed orientation with respect to the Earth’s magnetic field. This limited the previous work to only analyze detection rates when the test vehicle travelled a single heading. Since one of the goals of this system is …

Predicting Articular Cartilage Constituent Material Properties Following In Vitro Growth Using A Proteoglycan-Collagen Mixture Model, Michael Stender Mar 2011

Predicting Articular Cartilage Constituent Material Properties Following In Vitro Growth Using A Proteoglycan-Collagen Mixture Model, Michael Stender

Master's Theses

A polyconvex continuum-level proteoglycan Cauchy stress function was developed based on the continuum electromechanical Poisson-Boltzmann unit cell model for proteoglycan interactions. The resulting proteoglycan model was combined with a novel collagen fibril model and a ground substance matrix material to create a polyconvex constitutive finite element model of articular cartilage. The true collagen fibril modulus , and the ground substance matrix shear modulus , were varied to obtain the best fit to experimental tension, confined compression, and unconfined compression data for native explants and explants cultured in insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1). Results indicate …

Tower-Tracking Heliostat Array, Joel T. Masters Mar 2011

Tower-Tracking Heliostat Array, Joel T. Masters

Master's Theses

This thesis presents a method of tracking and correcting for the swaying of a central receiver tower in concentrated solar production plants. The method uses a camera with image processing algorithms to detect movement of the center of the tower. A prototype was constructed utilizing a CMOS camera connected to a microcontroller to control the movements of three surrounding heliostats. The prototype uses blob-tracking algorithms to detect and correct for movements of a colored model target. The model was able to detect movements in the tower with average error of 0.32 degrees, and was able to correctly orient the surrounding …

High-Resolution, Non-Contact Angular Measurement System For Psa/Rsa, Ronald D. Sloat Mar 2011

High-Resolution, Non-Contact Angular Measurement System For Psa/Rsa, Ronald D. Sloat

Master's Theses

A non-contact angular measurement system for Pitch Static Attitude (PSA) and Roll Static Attitude (RSA) of hard disk drive sliders is designed and built. Real-time sampling at over 15 KHz is achieved with accuracy of +/- 0.05 degrees over a range of approximately 2-3 degrees. Measuring the PSA and RSA is critical for hard drive manufacturers to control and improve the quality and reliability of hard drives. Although the hard drive industry is able to measure the PSA and RSA at the subassembly level at this time, there is no system available that is able to measure PSA/RSA at the …

3-D Terrain Mapping And Navigation Using A Laser Range Finder, Matthew L. Azevedo, Matthew Parilla, Kevin K. Parsons Feb 2011

3-D Terrain Mapping And Navigation Using A Laser Range Finder, Matthew L. Azevedo, Matthew Parilla, Kevin K. Parsons

Mechanical Engineering

The purpose of this Senior Project is to develop and implement a three-dimensional mapping and navigation system utilizing laser technology on a robotic platform. The sponsor of this project, Synbotics® Incorporated, currently has an obstacle avoidance system only operating in a single horizontal plane. This limits the mapping and navigation ability of the robot because objects below and above this plane are not accounted for. A three-dimensional system is needed to allow the robot to better navigate and map an area by accounting for these objects in the third dimension and avoiding collisions. Keith Guy, Synbotics® Chief Executive Officer, requested …

An Advanced Numerical Model Of Gear Tooth Loading From Backlash And Profile Errors, Andrew Sommer, Jim Meagher, Xi Wu Jan 2011

An Advanced Numerical Model Of Gear Tooth Loading From Backlash And Profile Errors, Andrew Sommer, Jim Meagher, Xi Wu

Mechanical Engineering

This study demonstrates the early transient dynamic loading on teeth within a fixed-axis gear transmission arising from backlash and geometric manufacturing errors by utilizing a non-linear multi-body dynamics software model. Selection of the non-linear contact parameters such as the stiffness, force exponent, damping, and friction coefficients are presented for a practical transmission. Backlash between gear teeth which is essential to provide better lubrication on tooth surfaces and to eliminate interference is included as a defect and a necessary part of transmission design. Torsional vibration is shown to cause teeth separation and double-sided impacts in unloaded and lightly loaded gearing drives. …

A Differential Planetary Gear Model With Backlash And Teeth Damage, Xi Wu, Jim Meagher, Andrew Sommer Jan 2011

A Differential Planetary Gear Model With Backlash And Teeth Damage, Xi Wu, Jim Meagher, Andrew Sommer

Mechanical Engineering

Planetary gear trains can be more compact and efficient as power transmissions than fixed axis gear trains but are also more complicated and less understood in terms of vibration health monitoring. A practical differential planetary gear train, which combines two inputs and one output, is studied using multi-body dynamics software. Backlash between the sun gear and planet gears are precisely specified to avoid teeth interference and undercut. In order to calculate accurate impact forces, an impact model is chosen. Tooth geometry errors are created on the sun gear. Constraints and contact forces to the model are applied as close as …

An Advanced Controller For A Semi-Active Wheelchair Suspension, David J. Smith Jan 2011

An Advanced Controller For A Semi-Active Wheelchair Suspension, David J. Smith

Master's Theses

An Advanced Controller for a Semi-Active Wheelchair Suspension was designed, built and tested. The suspension consisted of a Goodyear 1S3-011 air spring, IQ Valves high speed proportional solenoid valve, and a custom made accumulator. Several controller designs specific to semi-active suspensions were designed and tested. The controllers investigated were skyhook, acceleration driven damping, and a combined control law employing both a dual and single sensor version. The implementation of skyhook control suffered performance degradation from the idealization due to particular elements of hardware, however acceleration driven damping showed a marked and statistically significant improvement over skyhook control, in hardware, by …
