Statistical Analysis Of Structural Response Via A Quadratic Regression Model, Mahesh Balasubramanian Jan 1998

Statistical Analysis Of Structural Response Via A Quadratic Regression Model, Mahesh Balasubramanian

Masters Theses

"Described herein is the development of an efficient capability to analyze the statistics of structural responses given a description of the statistics of the input, or design, variables. In the application of interest, inputs and outputs are related through a very large finite element model. The finite element model is approximated here by a second-order hyper-surface. Developed for the quadratic relationship are expressions for response means, standard deviations and correlation coefficients. The analysis allows correlated and uncorrelated input variables, and admissible input variable distributions are normal, log-normal and Weibull.

In addition to characterizations of response means, standard deviations and correlation …

Battery-Operated Atomic Force Microscope, Burford J. Furman, J. Christman, M. Kearny, F. Wojcik, M. Tortonese

Burford J. Furman

The design of a battery-operated atomic force microscope (AFM) using a piezoresistive cantilever is described. The AFM is designed so that all power to drive the scanning tube and detection electronics comes from a self-contained battery. The prototype AFM uses a 6 V, Ni–Cd, camcorder battery, however, any battery that supplies between 6 and 12 V may be used. Scanner control and data acquisition are implemented using commercially available software running on an external computer. The prototype AFM achieves a scan area of 53 by 53 μm, consumes 1.8 W of power, and can scan continuously for about 7 h …

Cell Mapping Based Fuzzy Control Of Car Parking, Tea-Quin Kim, Ming-Chuan Leu Jan 1998

Cell Mapping Based Fuzzy Control Of Car Parking, Tea-Quin Kim, Ming-Chuan Leu

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper describes the development of a near-optimal fuzzy controller for maneuvering a car in a parking lot. To generate the rules of the fuzzy controller, a cell mapping method is utilized to systematically generate near-optimal trajectories for all possible initial states in the parking lot. Based on the input-output relations of these trajectories, which represent the states and controls of the corresponding cells, a set of fuzzy rules are generated automatically. In order to result in a small number of fuzzy rules from the large amount of numerical information generated by cell mapping, grouping of trajectories is proposed and …

A Class Of Modified Hopfield Networks For Control Of Linear And Nonlinear Systems, Jie Shen, S. N. Balakrishnan Jan 1998

A Class Of Modified Hopfield Networks For Control Of Linear And Nonlinear Systems, Jie Shen, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a class of modified Hopfield neural networks (MHNN) and their use in solving linear and nonlinear control problems. This class of networks consists of parallel recurrent networks which have variable dimensions that can be changed to fit the problems under consideration. It has a structure to implement an inverse transformation that is essential for embedding optimal control gain sequences. Equilibrium solutions are discussed. Numerical results for a motivating aircraft control problem (linear) are presented. Furthermore, we formulate the state-dependent Riccati equation method (SDRE) for a class of nonlinear dynamical system and show how MHNN provides the solution. …

Robustness Analysis Of Hopfield And Modified Hopfield Neural Networks In Time Domain, Jie Shen, S. N. Balakrishnan Jan 1998

Robustness Analysis Of Hopfield And Modified Hopfield Neural Networks In Time Domain, Jie Shen, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A variant of the Hopfield network, called the modified Hopfield network is formulated. This network which consists of two mutually recurrent networks has more free parameters than the well-known Hopfield network. Stability analysis of this network is presented. The analysis is carried out in the time domain with an application of the Lyapunov method and robust control Lyapunov function. The current flow in the network is treated as a "control". This "controller" is shown to guarantee "a practically stabilizing control". Analysis of the Hopfield network is also included for completion.

Aerodynamic Interference For Hypersonic Missiles At Low Angle Of Attack, Harlan F. Nelson, Derek G. Hillstrom Jan 1998

Aerodynamic Interference For Hypersonic Missiles At Low Angle Of Attack, Harlan F. Nelson, Derek G. Hillstrom

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A Euler code is used to predict the flow field over a hypersonic missile and to determine the carryover factors KW(B), fin lift in the presence of the body, and KB(W), lift produced by the body in the presence of the fins. The missile is assumed to have cruciform, delta fins in the + orientation and an aspect ratio of 1.529. Results are presented as a function of fin span at Mach 6, 8, and 10, for a 2-deg angle of attack. Two ratios of specific heats, 1.4 and 1.3, are considered to partially account for vibrational excitation effects. Both …

The Effect Of A Baffle On Acoustic Radiation Directivity, Walter Eversman, Indranil Danda Roy Jan 1998

The Effect Of A Baffle On Acoustic Radiation Directivity, Walter Eversman, Indranil Danda Roy

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An investigation is made of the effect of an artificial baffle introduced in Finite Element modeling of acoustic radiation from turbofan inlets. The purpose of the baffle is to limit the extent of the computational domain in order to maximize the efficiency of the scheme. However, the possibility exists that the baffle, if improperly oriented, will generate spurious reflections which interfere with the true radiated acoustic field. A generic example of a turbofan inlet, including typical geometry and non-uniform potential flow in and around the nacelle, is modeled with a baffle as typically introduced limiting the angular extent of the …

An Integrated Approach To Determining The Sequence Of Machining Operations For Prismatic Parts With Interacting Features, Alan C. Lin, Shou Yee Lin, Das Diganta, Wen F. Lu Jan 1998

An Integrated Approach To Determining The Sequence Of Machining Operations For Prismatic Parts With Interacting Features, Alan C. Lin, Shou Yee Lin, Das Diganta, Wen F. Lu

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposed a framework for integrating artificial intelligence (AI) techniques and mechanistic models in the task of generating process plans for prismatic parts. The main issue of process planning addressed in this paper is the determination of the operation sequence for mechanical parts containing interacting features where machining of one feature might adversely affect the surface quality of other features. The informed graph-search strategy in AI is used to achieve the function of operation sequence planning. The search graph is built by considering alternative machining operations in converting a blank stock into the final part configuration. Several heuristic functions …

Evaluation Of Implicit Numerical Methods For Building Energy Simulation, Michael Crowley, Saleem Hashmi Jan 1998

Evaluation Of Implicit Numerical Methods For Building Energy Simulation, Michael Crowley, Saleem Hashmi

Articles

The stability of numerical methods used for finite-difference thermal modelling of buildings is discussed. A known instability in a commonly used process is described and alternative numerical methods with suitable stability properties are identified. With a view to selecting the optimum numerical method, the building energy simulation problem is characterized mathematically and appropriate implicit solvers are compared on the basis of accuracy and computational effort using a building related test problem prepared for this purpose. A recently developed numerical method with the necessary strong stability is found to possess higher computational efficiency than methods frequently used in this application and …

Automatic Car Registration Plate Recognition Using The Hough Transform, Shokri Gendy Jan 1998

Automatic Car Registration Plate Recognition Using The Hough Transform, Shokri Gendy

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The development of automatic car registration plate recognition systems will provide greater efficiency for vehicle monitoring in automatic access control, and will avoid the need to equip vehicles with special RF tags for identification since all vehicles possess a unique registration plate. Thus this study is an attempt to introduce an automatic car registration plate recognition system based on identifying the plate characters by using the Hough transform. However, the proposed recognition system can be used in conjunction with a tag system for higher security access control. The automatic registration plate recognition could also have considerable potential in a wide …

Placement Of Piezoelectric Actuators For Active Control Of Vibration Using Modal Parameters, Xuegeng Zhu Jan 1998

Placement Of Piezoelectric Actuators For Active Control Of Vibration Using Modal Parameters, Xuegeng Zhu

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

An equation is derived to model the piezoelectric actuators incorporation with flexible structures. This equation permits the comparison of the performance indices over the entire structure for a piezoelectric actuator with constant area, which is unachievable if the Finite Element Method is used for complicated structures.

An index has been developed for placement of piezoelectric actuator for control of vibration of a flexible structure. This index is derived from the definition of H2norm. Computation of the proposed index requires only the natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes of the structures of interest. The method is well suited to large …

Thermodynamic Modeling And Analysis Of Human Stress Responses, Satish C. Boregowda Jan 1998

Thermodynamic Modeling And Analysis Of Human Stress Responses, Satish C. Boregowda

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A novel approach based on the second law of thermodynamics is developed to investigate the psychophysiology and quantify human stress level. Two types of stresses (thermal and mental) are examined. A Unified Stress Response Theory (USRT) is developed under the new proposed field of study called Engineering Psychophysiology. The USRT is used to investigate both thermal and mental stresses from a holistic (human body as a whole) and thermodynamic viewpoint. The original concepts and definitions are established as postulates which form the basis for thermodynamic approach to quantify human stress level. An Objective Thermal Stress Index (OTSI) is developed by …
