A Finite Element For The Three-Dimensional Deformation Of A Circular Ring Of Arbitrary Cross Section, Jeffrey Stuart Knowlton Dec 1982

A Finite Element For The Three-Dimensional Deformation Of A Circular Ring Of Arbitrary Cross Section, Jeffrey Stuart Knowlton

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

A two-node finite element for relatively compact, solid curved beams is derived. A node is located at the centroid of each end of the beam, and each node has six degrees of freedom, consisting of three translations and three rotations in mutually perpendicular directions. The element stiffness matrix has dimensions 12x12. A cylindrical polar coordinate system is used to express the components of the associated displacement and load vectors. As a consequence of the assumption of a nonzero cross-section product of inertia, deflections in the plane and out of the plane of beam curvature are coupled. Hence in-plane loads can …

Overall maximum dimensions of the system needed to be maintained to insure the system's transportability through doors and corridors.

Crimp-Type Electrical Connectors, Ted Lai-Che Kuo May 1982

Crimp-Type Electrical Connectors, Ted Lai-Che Kuo

Dissertations

Three types of surface conditions (plain surface, plain surface with oxidation inhibitor, and toothed surface) and four types of environmental gases (air, nitrogen, hydrogen, and oxygen) were used to study the performance of electrical connectors installed on aluminum conductors. All of the connectors were placed insealed vessels which allowed the desired type of gas to flow at a steady rate. The connectors were then current cycled.

For the connections prepared with plain surfaces, the connectors deteriorated equally fast in air, nitrogen and hydrogen. Only the connectorsexposed to oxygen showed a higher deterioration rate than the others.

Connections prepared withhaving plain …

Photovoltaic Cells: Common Power Source For Tomorrow?, Florida Solar Energy Center, Arthur Litka May 1982

Photovoltaic Cells: Common Power Source For Tomorrow?, Florida Solar Energy Center, Arthur Litka

FSEC Energy Research Center®

The word "photovoltaic" combines the scientific terms "photo", meaning light, and "voltaic", meaning voltage. Together, the terms mean voltage generated by light energy. Specially treated silicon, or another substance, is manufactured in such a way that when light strikes it electricity is produced. The cells have no moving parts, and they are durable. They are commonly called solar cells.

Improved Finite Element Methodology For Integrated Thermal-Structural Analysis, Pramote Dechaumphai Apr 1982

Improved Finite Element Methodology For Integrated Thermal-Structural Analysis, Pramote Dechaumphai

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

An integrated thermal-structural finite element approach for efficient coupling of thermal and structural analysis is presented. New thermal finite elements which yield exact nodal and element temperatures for one-dimensional linear steady-state heat transfer problems are developed. A nodeless variable formulation is used to establish improved thermal finite elements for one-dimensional nonlinear transient and two-dimensional linear transient heat transfer problems. The thermal finite elements provide detailed temperature distributions without using additional element nodes and permit a common discretization with lower order congruent structural finite elements. The accuracy of the integrated approach is evaluated by comparisons with analytical solutions and conventional finite …

Measurement Of Neck Development In Tensile Testing Using Projection Moire, Raghavan Srinivasan, C. S. Hartley, C. Raju, J. Clave Jan 1982

Measurement Of Neck Development In Tensile Testing Using Projection Moire, Raghavan Srinivasan, C. S. Hartley, C. Raju, J. Clave

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

The projection moire technique affords an accurate method of measuring the geometry of the necked region in a tensile specimen. Corrections to the measured stress, necessary to account for the triaxiality introduced by the neck, require values for the radius of curvature of the specimen at the minimum section. The spacing of fringes resulting from the interference between a grating projected on the specimen surface and a master grating not only provide information which permits calculation of the radius but also demonstrates any changes in symmetry resulting from plastic deformation. Results obtained by testing specimens of copper and mild steel …

Investigation Of Blood Pressure Measurement Using A Hydraulic Occlusive Cuff, Kusha R. Bhattarai Jan 1982

Investigation Of Blood Pressure Measurement Using A Hydraulic Occlusive Cuff, Kusha R. Bhattarai

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis presents an improved oscillotonometric system for the measurement of human blood pressure. The study included:

1. The design of a hydraulic occlusive cuff,

2. The investigation of the wave forms taken from the blood pressure measurements, and

3. The design of a mechanism for the simulation of human blood pressure pulse.

In this study, an experimental system consisting of a rigid shell occlusive cuff, a constant volume displacement pump, a transducer, and a chart recorder was designed and used for data collection.

Inversion To Obtain Aerosol Size Distributions From Measurements With A Differential Mobility Analyzer, Darryl J. Alofs, P. Balakumar

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

To Measure Size Distributions of Sub micrometer Aerosols with an Electrical Differential Mobility Analyzer (DMA) Requires an Inversion Procedure. the Knutson (1976) and the Hoppel (1978) Inversion Procedures Were Numerically Investigated for the Case of Log-Normal Aerosol Size Distributions. It Was Found that the Hoppel Procedure Converges to the Same Result as that Given by the Knutson Procedure. the Computational Range for Geometric Mean Diameter (Χg) Was 0.025-0.25 Μm, and for Geometric Standard Deviation (Σg) Was 1.1-2.4. the Inversion Error Was Found to Be Greater Than 10% in Certain "Forbidden Zones" of Χg and Σ …

High Pressure Liquid Jet Nozzle System For Enhanced Mining And Drilling, B. P. Selberg Jan 1982

High Pressure Liquid Jet Nozzle System For Enhanced Mining And Drilling, B. P. Selberg

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This invention is directed to a nozzle configuration capable of enhancing the cutting and drilling effects of high pressure liquid fluid jets. The jet system is particularly adapted to configurations of two or more liquid jets which are oriented to converge at a common point. The internal nozzle configuration produces controlled instability in the jet stream causing a more rapid breakup into droplets which can be combined to produce very fast moving jets and slow moving jets when collision between droplets occur. The velocity of the fast jets so formed may be several times greater than the original velocity of …

A Single Cylinder Engine Study Of Lean Supercharged Operation For Spark Ignition Engines, Kenneth Robert Schmid Jan 1982

A Single Cylinder Engine Study Of Lean Supercharged Operation For Spark Ignition Engines, Kenneth Robert Schmid

Masters Theses

"A comprehensive single cylinder engine test program to evaluate Lean Supercharged Operation (LSO) for spark ignition engines was conducted. The evaluation involved an experimental program studying the power, emissions, and efficiency of a single cylinder engine. The relationships between engine power, efficiency, and emissions and the engine operating variables such as absolute intake manifold pressure, Exhaust Gas Recirculation rates, and spark timing were studied"--Abstract, page ii.
