Passive Cooling And Human Comfort, Florida Solar Energy Center, Philip Fairey Dec 1981

Passive Cooling And Human Comfort, Florida Solar Energy Center, Philip Fairey

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Comfort within buildings is primarily controlled by four major factors: air temperature, mean radiant temperature, humidity and airflow. Each can have a dominating effect. Their effects are not necessarily additive and practically never linear. There are, additionally, other factors which affect comfort including clothing, activity level and climatization. Some psychological triggers, such as certain colors, also seem to affect comfort, and "state of mind" can have major effects on individual comfort sensations. Comfort zones, therefore, are very generally defined as the zone in which 80 percent of the population will experience the sensation of thermal comfort.

Water Wave Refraction With Non-Linear Theory, Im Sang Oh Oct 1981

Water Wave Refraction With Non-Linear Theory, Im Sang Oh

OES Theses and Dissertations

Two different kinds of wave refraction models are formulated in the present study using Stokes' third order wave theory. One type of model is utilized in a parametric study employing several different topographies. Wave trajectories obtained from this model, when obtained by using first and third order wave theory with and without the consideration of energy dissipation, show considerable differences. These differences are examined in more detail for a bottom of constant slope: (1) An approximate 10% difference occurs between the refraction coefficients obtained using the first and the third order wave theory. (2) Considerably different ray trajectories are detected …

Experimental Determination Of Post-Buckling Performance Of Steel Angles, Rupasiri Purasinghe Sep 1981

Experimental Determination Of Post-Buckling Performance Of Steel Angles, Rupasiri Purasinghe

Dissertations and Theses

An experimental testing program was conducted to determine the compression member performance in post-buckling region. These results are compared with an analytical computer program developed by Portland State University under Bonneville Power Administration Contract 79-80BP 24005. The paper presents the sensitivity of the performance of single angle compression members to various parameters such as length to radius of gyration ratio, eccentricity, end conditions and yield stress. The effect of local buckling on long member performance is also documented.

Trailer Hitch, T. Richard Robe Aug 1981

Trailer Hitch, T. Richard Robe

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Patents

The present invention is directed to a trailer hitch for a vehicle. The trailer hitch is designed to be connected to a vehicle and permits two degrees of freedom for the hitchpoint. The first degree of freedom is in a lateral direction which permits the hitchpoint to have freedom to move horizontally in a lateral direction. This degree of freedom is dampened by a viscous dampener to improve the lateral stability of a trailer connected to the hitchball. Further, springs are provided to resist lateral movement and to restore the hitchpoint to its original position during the pulling of a …

Deposition Of Particles In Vertical Conduits Due To Electrostatic Charge, Diffusion, And Gravity, Melvin Wilbur Gelber May 1981

Deposition Of Particles In Vertical Conduits Due To Electrostatic Charge, Diffusion, And Gravity, Melvin Wilbur Gelber

Dissertations

This investigation was made to determine the effect on the deposition of fine particles in a vertical channel and in a vertical tube due to the influences of electrostatic charge, diffusion, and gravity acting in the direction of flow. The flow considered was laminar, incompressible and steady.

The governing equations for the fluid phase were derived from the Navier-Stokes equation and the continuity equation while the equations for the particle phase were derived from Poisson's potential equation and the continuity equation. Since the governing equations are non-linear partial differential equations the solutions were developed using numerical methods.

The flow patterns …

Effects Of Multiple Scattering And Surface Albedo On The Photochemistry Of The Troposphere, Tommy Reinhold Robert Augustsson Apr 1981

Effects Of Multiple Scattering And Surface Albedo On The Photochemistry Of The Troposphere, Tommy Reinhold Robert Augustsson

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A one-dimensional photochemical model of the troposphere containing the species of the nitrogen, oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, and sulfur families has been developed and used to investigate the vertical profiles and the natural (including atmospheric chemical reactions) and anthropogenic sources and sinks of these species. The species continuity equations are solved numerically applying prescribed boundary conditions. The vertical flux is simulated by use of the parameterized eddy diffusion coefficients. Heterogeneous losses (e.g. rainout, gas-to-particle chemistry, and dry deposition), are parameterized to make calculated profiles consistent with measurements. The photochemical model is coupled to a radiative transfer model that calculates the radiation …

Sound Absorption In N2-H2o Gas Mixtures At Room Temperature And Low Frequency/Pressure Ratios, William Axam Griffin Apr 1981

Sound Absorption In N2-H2o Gas Mixtures At Room Temperature And Low Frequency/Pressure Ratios, William Axam Griffin

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This study was motivated by a need to obtain standard values of nitrogen's contribution to sound absorption in the Earth's atmosphere. Specific goals included accurate measurements of sound absorption in nitrogen - water vapor mixtures at room temperature and low frequency/pressure ratios, the determination of the N2 vibrational relaxation peak location, (f/P)max, on the f/P axis as a function of humidity, h, and critical evaluation of all results.

The free decay technique was used in a resonance tube to obtain ten sets of sound absorption data in N2-H2O gas mixtures and requisite companion …

A General Solution For Wind Tunnel Boundary-Induced Interference In Two-Dimensional Subsonic Flow, Werner Johann Anton Dahm Mar 1981

A General Solution For Wind Tunnel Boundary-Induced Interference In Two-Dimensional Subsonic Flow, Werner Johann Anton Dahm

Masters Theses

A general solution is presented for determination of wind tunnel boundary-induced interference in two-dimensional subsonic flow. The solution requires no a priori knowledge of the model geometry or tunnel wall characteristics, and instead, relates the interference to velocity measurements at a selected control surface within the tunnel. The solutions for the tunnel, free-air and interference fields are obtained using linearized subsonic theory with the Fourier transform technique. An analytical example dealing with the case of the wavy wall in the presence of a generalized tunnel wall boundary condition demonstrates the validity of the solutions in closed form. Numerical examples dealing …

The Effect Of Air Turbulence On The Rate Of Frost Growth On A Horizontal Flat Plate, Dennis Wayne Schulte Jan 1981

The Effect Of Air Turbulence On The Rate Of Frost Growth On A Horizontal Flat Plate, Dennis Wayne Schulte

Masters Theses

“One factor currently affecting the efficient performance of finned refrigeration coils is frosting. This investigation determined the effect of air turbulence intensity on the growth rate of frost on a chilled flat plate in an effort to reduce the frosting problem.

Air turbulence intensities ranging from 1 to 22 percent were used with an air velocity of 590 fpm, and an air condition of 45°F and 0.0051 lb/lb humidity ratio, for the six hour tests. Additional tests at 7-8 percent air turbulence intensity were made for other air and velocity conditions.

The results showed that the effect of air turbulence …
