Sound Absorption In N2-H2O Gas Mixtures At Elevated Temperatures, Roger W. Meredith Dec 1980

Sound Absorption In N2-H2O Gas Mixtures At Elevated Temperatures, Roger W. Meredith

Physics Theses & Dissertations

Sound absorption measurements were conducted in N2 -H2O gas mixtures at 297, 343, and 387 Kelvin to determine the location of the vibrational relaxation peak of nitrogen on the frequency/pressure, (f/P), axis as a function of humidity and temperature. At low humidities the best fit of the data is to a linear relationship between (f/P)max and humidity (h) yields a slope of 1 .84 X 104 Hz/ atm mole fraction at all three temperatures. The slope is the same as that reported by Zuckerwar and Griffin (2.00 X 104 Hz/atm mole fraction) but is …

The Performance Of Crossed-Vane Swirl Meters, H. L. Lee, William W. Durgin Nov 1980

The Performance Of Crossed-Vane Swirl Meters, H. L. Lee, William W. Durgin

Office of the Provost Scholarship

Vortimeters consisting of vanes rotating about pipe axes are frequently used to indicate the swirl present in pump columns and feedlines from sumps and in piping networks. Since the design of such devices varies widely, the study described herein was undertaken to identify salient design parameters and to evaluate a device designed according to information available in the literature.

An apparatus which could produce known amounts of angular momentum in a pipeline was verified by direct measurement of axial and tangential velocity profiles. By using the assumption that a vortimeter, with vanes spanning only the rotational core, responded to an …

Concepts In Passive Design #2 Devices For East And West Shading, Florida Solar Energy Center, Ross Mccluney Sep 1980

Concepts In Passive Design #2 Devices For East And West Shading, Florida Solar Energy Center, Ross Mccluney

FSEC Energy Research Center®

A major source of heat in buildings is direct solar radiation through east and west windows--welcome heat energy in cold weather, but a summertime problem. Since Florida has such a long cooling season and generally a short heating season, it is especially important to protect east and west walls, windows, and sliding glass doors from the summer sun while allowing adequate light to enter the building year-round. From a lighting standpoint, natural daylight is on the whole quite good but it can produce unwanted heat and visual glare if not properly controlled.

Concepts In Passive Design #3 Passive Cooling Categorizations, Florida Solar Energy Center

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Editor's Note: While passive solar heating is relatively well evolved, passive cooling is only on the threshold of development, and many of its terms are new to the practicing professional. At the Fourth Annual Passive Cooling Conference this problem was addressed by William W. Holmes of the University of Nebraska with the presentation of a 10-point categorization of cooling techniques. We are indebted to Mr. Holmes for this contribution to the emerging field of passive cooling and present it here as a point of departure and working vocabulary for the design professional.

Lower Mode Response Of Circular Cylinders In Cross-Flow, William W. Durgin, P. A. March, Paul J. Lefebvre Jun 1980

Lower Mode Response Of Circular Cylinders In Cross-Flow, William W. Durgin, P. A. March, Paul J. Lefebvre

Office of the Provost Scholarship

Transverse amplitude responses of a circular cylinder in cross-flow were determined as a function of reduced velocities for a variety of spring constants and damping coefficients. Maxima were found at reduced velocities of 5 and 16, and were of comparable amplitude. The first resonance, designated the "fundamental mode, " was due to normal vortex street excitation of the spring-mass system. The second resonance, designated the "lower mode," occurred when the natural frequency was approximately one-third of the normal vortex shedding frequency. By assuming that the driving force was sinusoidal, it was possible to evaluate the lift coefficients at resonance. Lift …

Impingement Of An Axi-Symmetric Jet On A Flat Surface, Amir J. Daibes May 1980

Impingement Of An Axi-Symmetric Jet On A Flat Surface, Amir J. Daibes

Theses

An incompressible, inviscid irrotational flow model was used to represent the normal impingement of a circular axisymmetric jet upon a flat plate. An analytical investigation was conducted to determine the free surface of the jet and the solution of the potential flow problem was obtained using finite difference techniques for jet height-to-nozzle radius ratio of 2.4.

The velocity and pressure distributions at the plate surface and along the jet centerline were obtained.

The results from the finite difference solution are in close agreement with other most recent results from available experimental, and approximate solutions to the potential flow problem.

Concepts In Passive Design #1 Roof Overhangs, Florida Solar Energy Center, Philip Fairey Apr 1980

Concepts In Passive Design #1 Roof Overhangs, Florida Solar Energy Center, Philip Fairey

FSEC Energy Research Center®

A major source of heat in buildings is direct solar radiation through windows--welcome in cold weather, but a problem in hot weather. Since Florida has such a lengthy cooling season, it is most important to protect windows from the sun; however, there are times between November and March when some heat is needed. Fortunately, the change in the sun's path from summer to winter is such that a properly designed roof overhang can protect south-facing windows from the high summer sun, yet allow the lower winter sun to come in.

Analytic And Experimental Studies Of A True Airspeed Sensor, Joseph Yao-Cheng Shen Apr 1980

Analytic And Experimental Studies Of A True Airspeed Sensor, Joseph Yao-Cheng Shen

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The objective of this study was to analyze and design a true airspeed sensor which will replace the conventional pitot-static pressure transducer. This sensor should have the following characteristics: the flow phenomenon is vortex procession, or the "vortex whistle", it should have no moving parts, and also is to be independent of temperature, density, altitude or humidity changes. This sensor has been designed mainly for small commercial aircraft with the airspeed up to 321.9 km/hr (200 mph).

In an attempt to model the complicated fluid mechanics of the vortex precession, three-dimensional, inviscid, unsteady, incompressible fluid flow was studied by using …

Influence Of Nonequilibrium Radiation And Shape Change On The Flowfield Of A Jupiter Probe With Ablation And Mass Injection, Sundaresa Venkata Subramanian

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The influence of nonequilibrium radiative energy transfer and the effect of probe configuration changes on the flow phenomena around a Jovian entry body is investigated. The radiating shock-layer flow is assumed to be axisymmetric, viscous, laminar and in chemical equilibrium. The radiative transfer equations are derived under nonequilibrium conditions which include multi-level energy transitions. The equilibrium radiative transfer is calculated with an existing nongray radiation model which accounts for molecular band, atomic line and continuum transitions. The nonequilibrium results are obtained with and without ablation injection in the shock layer. The nonequilibrium results are found to be influenced greatly by …

A Cavity Absorber For A Focusing Solar Collector, Andrew W. Crapo Apr 1980

A Cavity Absorber For A Focusing Solar Collector, Andrew W. Crapo

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The concept of a cavity absorber for use with a focusing parabolic trough is developed in this paper. A mathematical model is formulated and used to compare different absorber geometries. Limitations of the model are discussed and within the range of materials and fabrication methods available, the choice of a cylindrical cavity is substantiated. Relative sizes of the gap and cylinder are chosen for a given mirror arc length, focal length, and alignment error. The model is used to optimize these parameters and predict absorber and collector efficiency. The processes of building and testing the absorber are detailed, and test …
