Vortimeters consisting of vanes rotating about pipe axes are frequently used to indicate the swirl present in pump columns and feedlines from sumps and in piping networks. Since the design of such devices varies widely, the study described herein was undertaken to identify salient design parameters and to evaluate a device designed according to information available in the literature.

From some low frequency scattering investigations in radar, it is suggested that interrogating the target with "ramp" function has distinct advantages. This "ramp" function is a ramp in amplitude, not frequency. The returning echo is predicted to exhibit directly in the time domain, information of the cross-sectional area of a target as the ramp passes the target. From this information, one can infer size, volume, and orientation of the target. The theory for this interpretation is based on the physical optics approximation. The effect of applied stress on the temperature dependence of the longitudinal ultrasonic velocity has been investigated in commercial aluminum and copper. Velocities of 10 MHz longitudinal waves as a function of temperature were measured on ten specimens of these metals while they were subjected to external compressive stresses. In all measurements, the velocity increased linearly as the temperature was lowered in the temperature range between 280 and 200 K. Transverse amplitude responses of a circular cylinder in cross-flow were determined as a function of reduced velocities for a variety of spring constants and damping coefficients. Maxima were found at reduced velocities of 5 and 16, and were of comparable amplitude. The first resonance, designated the "fundamental mode, " was due to normal vortex street excitation of the spring-mass system. The second resonance, designated the "lower mode," occurred when the natural frequency was approximately one-third of the normal vortex shedding frequency. Impingement Of An Axi-Symmetric Jet On A Flat Surface, Amir J. Daibes

Theses

An incompressible, inviscid irrotational flow model was used to represent the normal impingement of a circular axisymmetric jet upon a flat plate. An analytical investigation was conducted to determine the free surface of the jet and the solution of the potential flow problem was obtained using finite difference techniques for jet height-to-nozzle radius ratio of 2.4.

The velocity and pressure distributions at the plate surface and along the jet centerline were obtained.

The results from the finite difference solution are in close agreement with other most recent results from available experimental, and approximate solutions to the potential flow problem.

The concept of a cavity absorber for use with a focusing parabolic trough is developed in this paper. A mathematical model is formulated and used to compare different absorber geometries. Limitations of the model are discussed and within the range of materials and fabrication methods available, the choice of a cylindrical cavity is substantiated. Relative sizes of the gap and cylinder are chosen for a given mirror arc length, focal length, and alignment error. This thesis presents the theory, analysis, testing and implementation of a scheme to reduce shunt compensation capacitor switching transients. The fringes generated in holographic interferograms by independent rotations of an object are used to determine the sensitivity vectors of a hologram recording setup. This is done by identifying the fringes observed on the surface of a 3-D object with a fringe vector, which, in turn, equals the vector product of the sensitivity vector with object rotation. These vector relationships are formulated in terms of the projection matrices, and a least square error solution is derived that extracts the sensitivity vectors from the fringe data from two or more known rotations.
