Analysis Of The Transient Response Of A Flat Rotating Disk By Generalized Transforms, Kenneth Wayne Chase Sep 1963

Analysis Of The Transient Response Of A Flat Rotating Disk By Generalized Transforms, Kenneth Wayne Chase

Theses and Dissertations

The object of this thesis was to lay a foundation for a comprehensive study of the dynamic response of rotating members. This initial phase of the study includes a theoretical investigation and proposes experimental techniques for the determination of the stresses and strains in a thin, rotating disk with a concentric hole, subjected to transient shaft inputs. There are many practical applications of this problem including computor memory storage disks, turbine rotors, grinding wheels, saw blades, gears, optical reflectors, and solar sails for space vehicles.

Analysis Of Steady State Heat Flux Measurement By The Initial Slope Technique, Charles Earl Cartmill Aug 1963

Analysis Of Steady State Heat Flux Measurement By The Initial Slope Technique, Charles Earl Cartmill

Theses and Dissertations

The impulse technique is progressively being developed for determining the steady state rate of heat transfer systems involving exponential temperature-time histories. A pulse thermocouple system has been utilized in such a technique having a steady state response time on the order of one time constant of the thermocouple used. When an impulse thermocouple system is not used, the required time in obtaining the steady state value is on the order of five time constants or the time required to reach steady state.

Radiant Flux Distribution From Concave Radiation Sources, Richard K. Duke Aug 1963

Radiant Flux Distribution From Concave Radiation Sources, Richard K. Duke

Theses and Dissertations

In order to analyse the radiant heat transfer characteristics of a concave source, two vital concepts must be clearly understood. The first is called the apparent emissivity Ea and is a function of both the local total emissivity E and of the geometry of the source. Although the total emissivities of ordinary substances range between zero and one, the two extremeties never occur. Surface emissivities which approach these values in the limit, must be created mechanically from materials in the range 0

Design And Fabrication Of An Apparatus To Determine Heat Transfer Coefficients In An Air-Particle Mixture Over A Horizontal Flat Plate At Uniform Temperature, Louis G. Hunter Jr. Aug 1963

Design And Fabrication Of An Apparatus To Determine Heat Transfer Coefficients In An Air-Particle Mixture Over A Horizontal Flat Plate At Uniform Temperature, Louis G. Hunter Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The study of two phase flow, where a finely divided solid is suspended in a fluid medium, has received considerable attention in the last five years due to the increased number of systems in which this phenomena occurs. The two most important areas involving the gas- particle mechanism are nuclear reactor heat exchangers and liquid and solid rockets.

Study Of Aerodynamic Forces On An Unsymmetrical Body As It Is Oscillated In A Air Stream, David Rees Tree Aug 1963

Study Of Aerodynamic Forces On An Unsymmetrical Body As It Is Oscillated In A Air Stream, David Rees Tree

Theses and Dissertations

The object of this work was to design and build equipment to measure the aerodynamic forces which will cause self-induced oscillations of a body having an unsymmetrical cross-section, such as a D-section. This self-induced oscillation has been called "stall flutter" or in electrical transmission lines, "galloping-transmission lines." It is hoped that this equipment will be used to gain basic Information about these aerodynamic forces.

Heat Flux Measurement By Miniature Calorimeters, Gary Rex Coffin Aug 1963

Heat Flux Measurement By Miniature Calorimeters, Gary Rex Coffin

Theses and Dissertations

During recent years an increasing number of technical firms and manufacturers have begun to specify heat flux, energy input per unit area per unit time, as a testing and designing criteria. This change in the boundary condition (to heat flux from temperature excess or others) evolved from the idea that each material has a characteristic burning temperature. Therefore, the rate of ablation or burning depends mainly upon the rate of energy input into the specimen, and not its temperature. Thus, the need for a flux measuring device became more acute.

The Aerodynamic Drag On Spheres Under Acceleration, Charles Earl Nielson Aug 1963

The Aerodynamic Drag On Spheres Under Acceleration, Charles Earl Nielson

Theses and Dissertations

The requirement of a greater understanding of the behavior of solids-gas systems has shown itself profoundly with the advancement of science and technology during recent years. The range and variety of processes in which these systems play an important role is exceptionally broad. These processes range from meteorological disturbances such as dust storms, rain and snow, to the use of vacuum cleaning equipment. With the advancement of aircraft and space technology the influence of these systems is again felt in such cases as the motion of rockets, missiles and aircraft in flight, the behavior of liquid droplets or metallic particles …

The Verification And Use Of A Hot-Wire Anemometer In Turbulence Measurements, Charles Young Warner Aug 1963

The Verification And Use Of A Hot-Wire Anemometer In Turbulence Measurements, Charles Young Warner

Theses and Dissertations

One very important part of research is the development of effective, reliable instruments. The measurement of turbulence in flow fields is a complex research problem. It depends heavily upon the hot-wire anemometer. This thesis describes the evaluation and use of a constant- current hot-wire anemometer, and presents the equations governing its use for turbulence measurements. The thesis first enumerates and explains some of the important parameters of turbulent flows, providing the basis for the discussion of their measurement which follows. The cooling of a heated wire in forced convection and a typical anemometer circuit are discussed. Derivations of the instrument …

Whole-Field Methods In The Measurement Of Post-Elastic Surface Strains, Siew Poh Chan

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Several whole-field methods were studied and a new technique was developed for the purpose of measuring post-elastic surface strains in metals. Critical evaluation was given to the following experimental techniques: the moire effect and the birefringent coating.

Transient Response Of Linear Undamped And Lightly Damped Lumped Spring-Mass Systems By Graphica Techniques, Richard O. Brooks Jun 1963

Transient Response Of Linear Undamped And Lightly Damped Lumped Spring-Mass Systems By Graphica Techniques, Richard O. Brooks

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

Responsive motions of linear undamped and lightly damped lumped spring mass systems subjected to transient inputs can be determined by several methods. All these methods require solving of the differential equation in some manner. Practically all techniques for solving the differential equations involve higher mathematics.

A Study Of The Vibration Characteristics Of A Thin Shell Hyperbolic Paraboloid, Farrin W. West May 1963

A Study Of The Vibration Characteristics Of A Thin Shell Hyperbolic Paraboloid, Farrin W. West

Theses and Dissertations

Recent progress in structural engineering has been marked by the increased use of thin shells as load carrying members. In particular, shells of revolution have been widely utilized in the missile industry whereas shells of arbitrary shape have been incorporated in the architectural design of today's modern buildings. Missile applications have been extensively studied both statically and dynamically. However, architechural applications have generally been limited to the statics problem with little consideration being given to the dynamic behavior of these unique structures.
