Silica-Coated Metallic Nanoparticle-Based Hierarchical Super-Hydrophobic Surfaces Fabricated By Spin-Coating And Inverse Nanotransfer Printing, Shengjie Zhai, Hui Zhao Jun 2019

Silica-Coated Metallic Nanoparticle-Based Hierarchical Super-Hydrophobic Surfaces Fabricated By Spin-Coating And Inverse Nanotransfer Printing, Shengjie Zhai, Hui Zhao

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

By combining spin coating and inverse nanotransfer printing, silica-coated gold nanoparticles are patterned onto polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) superhydrophobic surfaces to form a hierarchical structure. A layer of nanoparticles is spin-coated on a flat silicon substrate serving as the stamp, which is then transferred to the raised regions of PDMS surfaces. Our inverse nanotransfer printing is in contrast to the standard nanotransfer printing, which transfers metal from the raised regions of a stamp to a flat PDMS surface. The fabricated hierarchical surface exhibits a higher contact angle and delays the Cassie-Wenzel transition during evaporation of a sessile droplet, indicating an improvement of …

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

A transparent dielectric elastomer actuator driven by few-layer-graphene (FLG) electrode was experimentally investigated. The electrodes were made of graphene, which was dispersed inN-methyl-pyrrolidone. The transparent actuator was fabricated from developed FLG electrodes. The FLG electrode with its sheet resistance of 0.45 kΩ/sq (80 nm thick) was implemented to mask silicone elastomer. The developed FLG-driven actuator exhibited an optical transparency of over 57% at a wavenumber of 600 nm and produced bending displacement performance ranging from 29 to 946 μm as functions of frequency and voltage. The focus variation was clearly demonstrated under actuation to study its application-feasibility in …

Role Of Hydrodynamic Behavior Of Dna Molecules In Dielectrophoretic Polarization Under The Action Of An Electric Field, Hui Zhao Jan 2011

Role Of Hydrodynamic Behavior Of Dna Molecules In Dielectrophoretic Polarization Under The Action Of An Electric Field, Hui Zhao

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

A continuum model is developed to predict the dielectrophoretic polarizability of coiled DNA molecules under the action of an alternating current electric field. The model approximates the coiled DNA molecule as a charged porous spherical particle. The model explains the discrepancies among scaling laws of polarizability of different-sized DNA molecules with contour length and such discrepancies are attributed to different hydrodynamic behavior. With zero or one fitting parameter, theoretical predictions are in good agreement with various experimental data, even though in experiments there are some uncertainties in regard to certain parameters.

Streaming Potential Generated By A Pressure-Driven Flow Over Superhydrophobic Stripes, Hui Zhao Jan 2011

Streaming Potential Generated By A Pressure-Driven Flow Over Superhydrophobic Stripes, Hui Zhao

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

The streaming potential generated by a pressure-driven flow over a weakly charged slip-stick surface [the zeta potential of the surface is smaller than the thermal potential (25 mV)] with an arbitrary double layer thickness is theoretically studied by solving the Debye–Huckel equation and Stokes equation. A series solution of the streaming potential is derived. Approximate expressions for the streaming potential in the limits of thin double layers and thick double layers are also given in excellent agreement with the full solution. To understand the impact of the slip, the streaming potential is compared against that over a homogeneously charged smooth …

User's Guide To Mbc3: Multi-Blade Coordinate Transformation Code For 3-Bladed Wind Turbine, G. S. Bir Sep 2010

User's Guide To Mbc3: Multi-Blade Coordinate Transformation Code For 3-Bladed Wind Turbine, G. S. Bir

Publications (E)

The dynamics of wind turbine rotor blades are conventionally expressed in rotating frames attached to the individual blades. The tower-nacelle subsystem though, sees the combined effect of all rotor blades, not the individual blades. Also, the rotor responds as a whole to excitations such as aerodynamic gusts, control inputs, and tower-nacelle motion—all of which occur in a nonrotating frame. Multi-blade coordinate transformation (MBC) helps integrate the dynamics of individual blades and express them in a fixed (nonrotating) frame. MBC involves two steps: transforming the rotating degrees of freedom and transforming the equations of motion. Reference 1 details the MBC operation. …

On The Effect Of Hydrodynamic Slip On The Polarization Of A Nonconducting Spherical Particle In An Alternating Electric Field, Hui Zhao Jan 2010

On The Effect Of Hydrodynamic Slip On The Polarization Of A Nonconducting Spherical Particle In An Alternating Electric Field, Hui Zhao

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

The polarization of a charged, dielectric, spherical particle with a hydrodynamically slipping surface under the influence of a uniform alternating electric field is studied by solving the standard model (the Poisson–Nernst–Planck equations). The dipole moment characterizing the strength of the polarization is computed as a function of the double layer thickness, the electric field frequency, the particle’s surface charge, and the slip length. Our studies reveal that two processes contribute to the dipole moment: ion transport inside the double layer driven by the electric field and the particle’s electrophoretic motion. The hydrodynamic slip will simultaneously impact both processes. In the …

Electro-Osmotic Flow Over A Charged Superhydrophobic Surface, Hui Zhao Jan 2010

Electro-Osmotic Flow Over A Charged Superhydrophobic Surface, Hui Zhao

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

Bubbles can be trapped inside textured structures such as grooves, forming a superhydrophobic surface. A superhydrophobic surface has a large effective hydrodynamic slip length compared to a smooth hydrophobic surface and holds the promise of enhancing electrokinetic flows that find many interesting applications in microfluidics. However, recent theoretical studies suggested that electro-osmotic flows over a weakly charged superhydrophobic surface

the zeta potential of the surface is smaller than the thermal potential (25 mV) can only be enhanced when liquid-gas interfaces are charged [T. M. Squires, Phys. Fluids 20, 092105 (2008); Bahga et al., J. Fluid Mech. 644, 245 (2010)]. So …
