Antimicrobial And Antioxidant Activities Of Essential Oil And Methanol Extract Of Jasminum Sambac From Djibouti, Fatou Abdoul-Latif, Prosper Edou, François Eba, Nabil Mohamed, Adwa Ali, Samatar Djama, Louis-Clément Obame, Mamoudou Hama Dicko

Pr. Mamoudou H. DICKO, PhD

The essential oil of jasminum sambac from Djibouti was subjected to screening for their possible antioxidant activity by two complementary test systems, namely DPPH free radical scavenging and beta-carotene-linoleic acid assays. Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) was used as positive control in both test systems. In the DPPH test system, the IC50 value of essential oil and methanol extract were respectively 7.43 and 2.30 μg/ml. In the beta-carotene-linoleic acid system, oxidation was effectively inhibited by Jasminum sambac, the RAA value of essential oil and methanol extract were respectively 96.6 and 93.9%. When compared to BHT, the essential oil and methanol extract had …

The Carillon And Its Haptic Signature : Modeling The Changing Force-Feedback Constraints Of A Musical Instrument For Haptic Display, Mark Havryliv, F. Geiger, M. Gurtler, Fazel Naghdy, Greg Schiemer Feb 2010

The Carillon And Its Haptic Signature : Modeling The Changing Force-Feedback Constraints Of A Musical Instrument For Haptic Display, Mark Havryliv, F. Geiger, M. Gurtler, Fazel Naghdy, Greg Schiemer

Greg Schiemer

The carillon is one of the few instruments that elicits sophisticated haptic interaction from amateur and professional players alike. Like the piano keyboard, the velocity of a player’s impact on each carillon key, or baton, affects the quality of the resultant tone; unlike the piano, each carillon baton returns a different force-feedback. Force-feedback varies widely from one baton to the next across the entire range of the instrument and with further idiosyncratic variation from one instrument to another. This makes the carillon an ideal candidate for haptic simulation. The application of synthesized forcefeedback based on an analysis of forces operating …

Cuda Implementation Of A Navier-Stokes Solver On Multi-Gpu Desktop Platforms For Incompressible Flows, Julien C. Thibault, Inanc Senocak Jan 2010

Cuda Implementation Of A Navier-Stokes Solver On Multi-Gpu Desktop Platforms For Incompressible Flows, Julien C. Thibault, Inanc Senocak

Inanc Senocak

Graphics processor units (GPU) that are traditionally designed for graphics rendering have emerged as massively-parallel "co-processors" to the central processing unit (CPU). Small-footprint desktop supercomputers with hundreds of cores that can deliver teraflops peak performance at the price of conventional workstations have been realized. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation capability with rapid computational turnaround time has the potential to transform engineering analysis and design optimization procedures. We describe the implementation of a Navier-Stokes solver for incompressible fluid flow using desktop platforms equipped with multi-GPUs. Specifically, NVIDIA’s Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) programming model is used to implement the discretized …

An Mpi-Cuda Implementation For Massively Parallel Incompressible Flow Computations On Multi-Gpu Clusters, Dana A. Jacobsen, Julien C. Thibault, Inanc Senocak

Inanc Senocak

Modern graphics processing units (GPUs) with many-core architectures have emerged as general-purpose parallel computing platforms that can accelerate simulation science applications tremendously. While multi-GPU workstations with several TeraFLOPS of peak computing power are available to accelerate computational problems, larger problems require even more resources. Conventional clusters of central processing units (CPU) are now being augmented with multiple GPUs in each compute-node to tackle large problems. The heterogeneous architecture of a multi-GPU cluster with a deep memory hierarchy creates unique challenges in developing scalable and efficient simulation codes. In this study, we pursue mixed MPI-CUDA implementations and investigate three strategies to …

Stochastic Event Reconstruction Of Atmospheric Contaminant Dispersion Using Bayesian Inference, Inanc Senocak, Nicolas W. Hengartner, Margaret B. Short, W. Brent Daniel Jan 2010

Stochastic Event Reconstruction Of Atmospheric Contaminant Dispersion Using Bayesian Inference, Inanc Senocak, Nicolas W. Hengartner, Margaret B. Short, W. Brent Daniel

Inanc Senocak

Environmental sensors have been deployed in various cities for early detection of contaminant releases into the atmosphere. Event reconstruction and improved dispersion modeling capabilities are needed to estimate the extent of contamination, which is required to implement effective strategies in emergency management. To this end, a stochastic event reconstruction capability that can process information from an environmental sensor network is developed. A probability model is proposed to take into account both zero and non-zero concentration measurements that can be available from a sensor network because of a sensor’s specified limit of detection. The inference is based on the Bayesian paradigm …

100nm Thick Aluminum Nitride Based Piezoelectric Nano Switches Exhibiting 1mv Threshold Voltage Via Body-Biasing, Nipun Sinha, Zhijun Guo, Valeriy Felmetsger, Gianluca Piazza Dec 2009

100nm Thick Aluminum Nitride Based Piezoelectric Nano Switches Exhibiting 1mv Threshold Voltage Via Body-Biasing, Nipun Sinha, Zhijun Guo, Valeriy Felmetsger, Gianluca Piazza

Nipun Sinha

This paper reports on the first demonstration of aluminum nitride (AlN) piezoelectric logic switches that were fabricated with ultra-thin (100nm) AlN films and exhibit a 1 mV threshold voltage via the body-biasing scheme. The application of a relatively low (< 6 V) fixed potential to the body terminal of a 4-terminal switch has resulted in a repeatable threshold voltage of 1 mV. The nano-switch has been cycled to > 109 cycles and, although the contact resistance was found to be high (~ 1 MΩ), the nano-films have functioned throughout to show high piezoelectric nano-film reliability.

Super-High-Frequency Two-Port Aln Contour-Mode Resonators For Rf Applications, Matteo Rinaldi, Chiara Zuniga, Chengjie Zuo, Gianluca Piazza

Matteo Rinaldi

This paper reports on the design and experimental verification of a new class of thin-film (250 nm) super-high-frequency laterally-vibrating piezoelectric microelectromechanical (MEMS) resonators suitable for the fabrication of narrow-band MEMS filters operating at frequencies above 3 GHz. The device dimensions have been opportunely scaled both in the lateral and vertical dimensions to excite a contour-extensional mode of vibration in nanofeatures of an ultra-thin (250 nm) AlN film. In this first demonstration, 2-port resonators vibrating up to 4.5 GHz have been fabricated on the same die and attained electromechanical coupling, kt2, in excess of 1.5%. These devices are employed to synthesize …

Demonstration Of Low Voltage And Functionally Complete Logic Operations Using Body-Biased Complementary And Ultra-Thin Aln Piezoelectric Mechanical Switches, Nipun Sinha, Timothy S. Jones, Zhijun Guo, Gianluca Piazza Dec 2009

Demonstration Of Low Voltage And Functionally Complete Logic Operations Using Body-Biased Complementary And Ultra-Thin Aln Piezoelectric Mechanical Switches, Nipun Sinha, Timothy S. Jones, Zhijun Guo, Gianluca Piazza

Nipun Sinha

This paper reports, for the first time, on the demonstration of low voltage and functionally complete logic elements (NAND and NOR) implemented by using body-biased complementary and ultra-thin (250 nm thick) Aluminum Nitride (AlN) based piezoelectric mechanical switches. This work presents, firstly, the importance of scaling AlN films for the demonstration of ultra-thin AlN switches and, secondly, the implementation of a new actuation scheme based on body biasing to lower the switch threshold voltage. Four of these ultra-thin switches were connected together to synthesize functionally complete MEMS logic gates (NAND and NOR) with a ± 2V swing and a body-bias …

Preliminary Numerical Analysis Of Valve Fatigue In A Checkball Pump For Driveline Applicatio, Yang Yang Dec 2009

Preliminary Numerical Analysis Of Valve Fatigue In A Checkball Pump For Driveline Applicatio, Yang Yang

Yang Yang

Recent studies have shown that hydraulic hybrid drivelines can significantly improve fuel savings for medium weight vehicles on stop-start drivecycles. In a series hydraulic hybrid (SHH) architecture, the conventional mechanical driveline is replaced with a hydraulic driveline that decouples vehicle speed from engine speed. In an effort to increase the design space, this paper explores the use of a fixed displacement check-ball piston pump in an SHH driveline. This paper identifies the potential life-limiting components of a fixed-displacement checkball piston pump and examines the likelihood of surface fatigue in the check valves themselves. Numerical analysis in ABAQUS software suggests that …
