Computer Aided Stress Analysis Of The Femur With Prosthetic Hip Stem Utilizing Computed Tomography, Wei-Chun Chang Jan 1994

Computer Aided Stress Analysis Of The Femur With Prosthetic Hip Stem Utilizing Computed Tomography, Wei-Chun Chang

Dissertations

A computer aided design and analysis method, utilizing computed tomography (CT) is developed, which together with a finite element program determines the stress and deformation patterns in the femur with hip prosthesis. The CT scan data file provides the geometry and the material parameters for the generated finite element model. The three-dimensional finite element model of the femur with hip prosthesis is automatically generated from the CT data file by a preprocessing procedure. The preprocessor includes a CT image display, edge detector, nodes generation, prosthesis simulator, mesh generator and model display. The loading conditions applied on the finite element model …

Isoparametric Finite Elements For Linear Isotropic Micropolar Plate Bending, Vallanore K. Suresh May 1989

Isoparametric Finite Elements For Linear Isotropic Micropolar Plate Bending, Vallanore K. Suresh

Dissertations

Finite element analysis programs for bending of linear isotropic micropolar elasticity are developed in this thesis. Isoparametric two-dimensional and three-dimensional elements are used to solve plate bending problems. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional finite element formulations are developed. Corresponding finite element programs are then developed. Patch tests are performed on the two-dimensional elements. Convergence studies are undertaken for the elements. Several plates are considered to evaluate the finite element scheme. The effects of the coupling factor N and characteristic length 1 are studied. A post processor with graphical display of displacements is developed.

Numerical results obtained for various plates are in good …

Two And Three-Dimensional Isoparametric Finite Elements For Axisymmetric Micropolar Elasticity, Fuang-Yuan Huang Apr 1986

Two And Three-Dimensional Isoparametric Finite Elements For Axisymmetric Micropolar Elasticity, Fuang-Yuan Huang

Dissertations

Finite element analysis program for isotropic and orthotropic axisymmetric micropolar (Cosserat) elastic solids are developed in this thesis. Isoparametric elements of 8- and 20- node are used to solve general three-dimensional problems, arid both 4- and 8-node elements are used for two-dimensional cases. Three-dimensional finite element formulation for cylindrical coordinate system is derived. Corresponding Fortran programs are then developed. Patch tests are performed for two-dimensional cases to verify the applicability of the finite element method to non-rectangular geometries. Several two-dimensional and three- dimensional problems for micropolar elastic solids are solved to verify the formulations arid computer program.

Interaction Between Structures And Fluids, Rahim Falsafi-Haghighi Sep 1978

Interaction Between Structures And Fluids, Rahim Falsafi-Haghighi

Dissertations

A finite element model for the study of solid-fluid interaction, with applications in flow-induced vibration analysis of reactor vessel and heat exchanger internals, is presented. The model is based on the discretization of the solid equation of motion and the fluid continuity and momentum equations and employs the solid displacements together with the fluid pressure and velocity components as the nodal degrees of freedom. This permits a realistic and accurate implementation of boundary conditions, in contrast with methods using solid displacements and fluid pressure as the only field variables. The numerical solution of the resulting matrix equation, involving non-symetric matrices, …
