Creating geometrically accurate photomosaics of underwater sites using images collected from an AUV or ROV is a difficult task due to dimensional errors which grow as a function of 3D image distortion and the mosaicking process. Although photomosiacs are accurate locally their utility for accurately representing a large survey area is jeopardized by this error growth. Evaluating the error in a mosaic is the first step in creating globally accurate photomosaics of an unstructured environment with bounded error. Tri-Brachial Flames Around Two Interactive Droplets In Flows With Fuel Vapor, Wei-Hsin Chen

The flame structures around two equal-sized and interactive fuel droplets immersed in high-temperature convective flows are examined. When the flame is sustained between the two droplets while the flow is pure air, an anchor-shape flame structure, namely the tri-brachial flame, is clearly observed. When far-field temperature or ambient equivalence ratio is increased, the flame propagates upstream and the fuel-lean premixed flame withers. However, ifthe ambient equivalence ratio is high to some extent such as 0.3, two wings ofthe flame, viz. the fuel-lean and the fuel-rich premixed flames, extend outward from the stoichiometric point. Development Of A Continuous Microscratch Technique In An Atomic Force Microscope And Its Application To Study Scratch Resistance Of Ultrathin Hard Amorphous Carbon Coatings, Sriram Sundararajan, Bharat Bhushan

A method to measure friction during scratching at linearly increasing loads in a commercial atomic force/friction force microscope (AFM/FFM) has been developed. The normal load was increased in small increments over the required range for the scratch using a software module while the friction signal was measured via a breakout box and data acquisition computer. Topography images of the scratch were obtained in situ with the AFM in tapping mode with minimal loss of damage event information.
