Kinematic And Dynamic Collision Statistics Of Cloud Droplets From High-Resolution Simulations, Bogdan Rosa, Hossein Parishani, Orlando Ayala, Wojciech W. Grabowski, Lian-Ping Wang

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

We study the dynamic and kinematic collision statistics of cloud droplets for a range of flow Taylor microscale Reynolds numbers (up to 500), using a highly scalable hybrid direct numerical simulation approach. Accurate results of radial relative velocity (RRV) and radial distribution function (RDF) at contact have been obtained by taking advantage of their power-law scaling at short separation distances. Three specific but inter-related questions have been addressed in a systematic manner for geometric collisions of same-size droplets (of radius from 10 to 60 μm) in a typical cloud turbulence (dissipation rate at 400 cm2 s-3. Firstly, …

Comprehensive Conjunctive-Use Management Of Connected Surface Water Groundwater Systems Using Stochastic Inputs And Uncertainties, Seshadri Suryanarayana Jul 1996

Comprehensive Conjunctive-Use Management Of Connected Surface Water Groundwater Systems Using Stochastic Inputs And Uncertainties, Seshadri Suryanarayana

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A comprehensive conjunctive-use management model is developed. The dynamics of flow and solute transport processes in connected surface water groundwater systems are integrated by a dual programming management model. The governing aquifer flow parameters and streamflows are treated as stochastic random processes. Multiple realizations of the random field are generated and are explicitly incorporated in a non-linear optimization model along with other system, environmental, and management constraints. To facilitate management of large aquifer systems, a linked simulation-optimization approach is used. The simulation program generates the response matrices for flow and transport processes. The management model then determines optimal well discharges …

Grid Sensitivity For Aerodynamic Optimization And Flow Analysis, Ideen Sadrehaghighi Apr 1993

Grid Sensitivity For Aerodynamic Optimization And Flow Analysis, Ideen Sadrehaghighi

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

An algorithm is developed to obtain the grid sensitivity with respect to design parameters for aerodynamic optimization. Two distinct parameterization procedures are developed for investigating the grid sensitivity with respect to design parameters of a wing-section as an example. The first procedure is based on traditional (physical) relations defining NACA four-digit wing-sections. The second is advocating a novel (geometrical) parameterization using spline functions such as NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) for defining the wing-section geometry. An inter-active algebraic grid generation technique, known as Two-Boundary Grid Generation (TBGG) is employed to generate C-type grids around wing-sections. The grid sensitivity of the domain …

Control Of Low-Speed Turbulent Separated Flow Over A Backward-Facing Ramp, John C. Lin Apr 1992

Control Of Low-Speed Turbulent Separated Flow Over A Backward-Facing Ramp, John C. Lin

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The relative performance and flow phenomena associated with several devices for controlling turbulent separated flow were investigated at low speeds. Relative performance of the devices was examined for flow over a curved, backward-facing ramp in a wind tunnel, and the flow phenomena were examined in a water tunnel using dye-flow visualization. Surface static pressure measurements and oil-flow visualization results from the wind tunnel tests indicated that transverse grooves, longitudinal grooves, submerged vortex generators, vortex generator jets (VGJ’s), Viets’ fluidic flappers, elongated arches +a + a (positive angle of attack), and large-eddy breakup devices (LEBU’s) +a + a placed near the …

Influence Of Nonequilibrium Radiation And Shape Change On The Flowfield Of A Jupiter Probe With Ablation And Mass Injection, Sundaresa Venkata Subramanian Apr 1980

Influence Of Nonequilibrium Radiation And Shape Change On The Flowfield Of A Jupiter Probe With Ablation And Mass Injection, Sundaresa Venkata Subramanian

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The influence of nonequilibrium radiative energy transfer and the effect of probe configuration changes on the flow phenomena around a Jovian entry body is investigated. The radiating shock-layer flow is assumed to be axisymmetric, viscous, laminar and in chemical equilibrium. The radiative transfer equations are derived under nonequilibrium conditions which include multi-level energy transitions. The equilibrium radiative transfer is calculated with an existing nongray radiation model which accounts for molecular band, atomic line and continuum transitions. The nonequilibrium results are obtained with and without ablation injection in the shock layer. The nonequilibrium results are found to be influenced greatly by …

Curing And Flow Of Thermosetting Resins For Composite Materials Pultrusion, Howard L. Price Jr. Apr 1979

Curing And Flow Of Thermosetting Resins For Composite Materials Pultrusion, Howard L. Price Jr.

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Fibrous composite materials for mechanical and structural applications often are expensive due to high labor costs. One economical way of making composites is pultrusion, a manufacturing process in which resin-impregnated fibers are pulled at a constant speed through a heated die which shapes the resin-fiber mass and cures the resin. Most of the work which has been done on the process has been of an empirical nature, with limited understanding of the process principles. Most of the experience with pultrusion has been gained with polyester resins and glass fibers. Very little experience has been gained with higher performance, more costly …
