Several problems must be solved in the construction, design, and operation of a nuclear fusion reactor. One of the chief problems in the manufacture of high-powered copper/polymer composite magnets is the difficulty to precisely control the fiber volume fraction. In this thesis, the effect of variations in fiber volume fraction on thermal stresses in copper/cyanate ester composite cylinders is investigated. The cylinder is a composite that uses copper wires that run longitudinally in a cyanate ester resin specifically developed by Composite Technology Development, Inc. The aim of this study is to analyze the transient behavior of structures with bolted joints subjected to impact or shock loads using experimental methods and Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Various factors that affect the response of the bolted joint structures for shock loading were studied, such as damping, preload, intensity of impact load and type of FE modeling. The objective of this work was to develop computational modeling procedures that provide structural analysts an improved physics-based shock model for combat vehicles focusing mainly on shock transmission across bolted joints. Flow Induced Vibrations In Pipes: A Finite Element Approach, Ivan Grant

Flow induced vibrations of pipes with internal fluid flow is studied in this work. Finite Element Analysis methodology is used to determine the critical fluid velocity that induces the threshold of pipe instability. The partial differential equation of motion governing the lateral vibrations of the pipe is employed to develop the stiffness and inertia matrices corresponding to two of the terms of the equations of motion. The equation of motion further includes a mixed-derivative term that was treated as a source for a dissipative function.
