Thermodynamic Analysis Of Hydrogen Production From Methane Via Autothermal Reforming And Partial Oxidation Followed By Water Gas Shift Reaction, Wei-Hsin Chen

Wei-Hsin Chen

Reaction characteristics of hydrogen production from a one-stage reaction and a two-stage reaction are studied and compared with each other in the present study, by means of thermodynamic analyses. In the one-stage reaction, the autothermal reforming (ATR) of methane is considered. In the two-stage reaction, it is featured by the partial oxidation of methane (POM) followed by a water gas shift reaction (WGSR) where the temperatures of POM and WGSR are individually controlled. The results indicate that the reaction temperature of ATR plays an important role in determining H2 yield. Meanwhile, the conditions of higher steam/methane (S/C) ratio and lower …

Preliminary Numerical Analysis Of Valve Fatigue In A Checkball Pump For Driveline Applicatio, Yang Yang Dec 2009

Preliminary Numerical Analysis Of Valve Fatigue In A Checkball Pump For Driveline Applicatio, Yang Yang

Yang Yang

Recent studies have shown that hydraulic hybrid drivelines can significantly improve fuel savings for medium weight vehicles on stop-start drivecycles. In a series hydraulic hybrid (SHH) architecture, the conventional mechanical driveline is replaced with a hydraulic driveline that decouples vehicle speed from engine speed. In an effort to increase the design space, this paper explores the use of a fixed displacement check-ball piston pump in an SHH driveline. This paper identifies the potential life-limiting components of a fixed-displacement checkball piston pump and examines the likelihood of surface fatigue in the check valves themselves. Numerical analysis in ABAQUS software suggests that …

This paper describes the architecture and implementation of an autonomous passenger vehicle designed to navigate using locally perceived information in preference to potentially inaccurate or incomplete map data. The vehicle architecture was designed to handle the original DARPA Urban Challenge requirements of perceiving and navigating a road network with segments defined by sparse waypoints. The vehicle implementation includes many heterogeneous sensors with significant communications and computation bandwidth to capture and process high-resolution, high-rate sensor data. The output of the comprehensive environmental sensing subsystem is fed into a kinodynamic motion planning algorithm to generate all vehicle motion. The requirements of driving …

Characterization Of Water Gas Shift Reaction In Association With Carbon Dioxide Sequestration, Wei-Hsin Chen

Wei-Hsin Chen

The characteristics of a water gas shift reaction (WGSR) in association with carbon dioxide sequestration under the effects of a high-temperature catalyst (HTC) and a low-temperature catalyst (LTC) are studied experimentally. With the condition of fixed residence time (0.1 s) for the reactants in the catalyst bed, it is found that the reaction behaviors with the HTC are inherently different from those with the LTC. Specifically, for the WGSR with the HTC, the reaction can be divided into a rapid growth regime, a progressive growth regime and a slow growth regime with increasing reaction temperature or steam/CO ratio. With regard …

Preliminary Model Tests For The Design Of A Gliding Deep Water Elevator, Christopher Roman, T. Gregory, E. Martin, A. Sanguinetti, J. Drummond Aug 2007

Preliminary Model Tests For The Design Of A Gliding Deep Water Elevator, Christopher Roman, T. Gregory, E. Martin, A. Sanguinetti, J. Drummond

Christopher N. Roman

This paper presents progress on the design of a "smart elevator" to be used in conjunction with deep sea ROV operations. Deep sea elevators are gravity driven untethered platforms used to deliver and or return items from the sea floor. Elevators are used when items are too large or heavy to be handled by the ROV, or when the turn around time to recover and redeploy the ROV system for sample removal is prohibitive. Unfortunately, efficiency is complicated by the precision with which elevators can be landed at a specific location on the bottom and recovered on the surface because …

Design Of A Gas Tight Water Sampler For Auv Operations, Christopher Roman, R. Camilli May 2007

Design Of A Gas Tight Water Sampler For Auv Operations, Christopher Roman, R. Camilli

Christopher N. Roman

This paper presents the design and preliminary test results for a small gas tight water sampler intended to work on scientific AUVs. In recent years AUVs have developed into reliable platforms capable of carrying a wide variety of environmental sensors for in-situ chemical measurements. Physical sample collection however remains difficult, due to the combination of space, power and complexity constraints inherent in working with autonomous platforms. The AUV sampler is a small (12 cm times 85 cm) cylindrical package designed to collect eight 20 ml gas tight volumes of water, with each sample maintained at high pressure to depths of …
