A Single-Stage Passive Vibration Isolation System For Scanning Tunneling Microscopy, Toan T. Le Feb 2021

A Single-Stage Passive Vibration Isolation System For Scanning Tunneling Microscopy, Toan T. Le

Master's Theses

Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) uses quantum tunneling effect to study the surfaces of materials on an atomic scale. Since the probe of the microscope is on the order of nanometers away from the surface, the device is prone to noises due to vibrations from the surroundings. To minimize the random noises and floor vibrations, passive vibration isolation is a commonly used technique due to its low cost and simpler design compared to active vibration isolation, especially when the entire vibration isolation system (VIS) stays inside an Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) environment. This research aims to analyze and build a single-stage …

Buckling Load Study On Pop Nut (Rivet) Using Finite Element Analysis, Saurabh Shankar Shegokar Jan 2020

Buckling Load Study On Pop Nut (Rivet) Using Finite Element Analysis, Saurabh Shankar Shegokar

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This study highlights the material behavior in riveting operation that includes buckling load analysis using ABAQUS. Finite Element Analysis is used to find the buckling load vs. Displacement results and validated with the results obtained in physical testing of rivet (POP Nut). A mesh sensitivity study is performed using ABAQUS to understand the optimum mesh size for this analysis. An axisymmetric model with contact properties is created and simulated to reduce the simulation time using ABAQUS. The results obtained through Finite Element Analysis show a good resemblance with the testing results. Design changes were suggested to achieve better results that …

Numerical Simulation Of High Velocity Impact Of A Single Polymer Particle During Cold Spray Deposition, Sagar P. Shah Nov 2016

Numerical Simulation Of High Velocity Impact Of A Single Polymer Particle During Cold Spray Deposition, Sagar P. Shah

Masters Theses

Abstract

The cold spray process is an additive manufacturing technology primarily suited for ductile metals, and mainly utilized in coating surfaces, manufacturing of freeform parts and repair of damaged components. The process involves acceleration of solid micro-particles in a supersonic gas flow and coating build-up by bonding upon high velocity impact onto a substrate. Coating deposition relies on the kinetic energy of the particles. The main objective of this study was to investigate the mechanics of polymer cold spray process and deformation behavior of polymers to improve technological implementation of the process.

A finite element model was created to simulate …
