Numerical Characterization Of The Hydrodynamics And Thermal Behavior Of Air Flow In A "Flex-Duct" Air Distribution System, Samad Gharehdaghi, Samir Moujaes

College of Engineering: Graduate Celebration Programs

The aim of this research paper is to compute the hydrodynamic and heat transfer characteristics of the air flow inside a flexible duct used for residential/small commercial buildings. Various new information which manufacturers do not provide usually are produced numerically among which heat transfer coefficient, needed for estimating heat loss, is a principal one. Circulation zones in depressions are found to exist. It is shown that these regions act as an insulator and decrease the heat loss along the duct. The results show that fully developed conditions exist much earlier with regard to the inlet for both hydrodynamic and thermal …

Shock And Vibration Isolation System For Ambulatory And Litter Patients In Ground And Air Medical Transport, Mohamad R. Hachem May 2012

Shock And Vibration Isolation System For Ambulatory And Litter Patients In Ground And Air Medical Transport, Mohamad R. Hachem

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This project explored the effectiveness of seat and litter air bladder technologies in reducing patient exposure to whole body shock and vibration during ground borne and airborne medical transport. Several seat and litter air bladder configurations were examined during field tests in a U.S. Army RG-33 MRAP ambulance and a U.S. Army HH-60M Black Hawk helicopter. The MRAP field tests were conducted at Ft. Detrick, Maryland. The Black Hawk field tests were conducted at Ft. Rucker, Alabama.

During the field tests, tri-axial vibration signals were recorded on a 16-channel CoCo90 Data Logger/Frequency Analyzer and then post processed in the laboratory …

Experimental And Finite Element Analysis Of Preloaded Bolted Joints Under Impact Loading, Brendan O'Toole, Kumarswamy Karpanan, Masoud Feghhi May 2006

Experimental And Finite Element Analysis Of Preloaded Bolted Joints Under Impact Loading, Brendan O'Toole, Kumarswamy Karpanan, Masoud Feghhi

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

One of the primary parameters in analyzing bolted joints is preload in the bolt. We have considered several possible preload modeling techniques to analyze the effect of preload on the dynamic response of the bolted joints. Five different methods of applying preload in the nonlinear finite element analysis are evaluated. These methods are “force on bolt and nut”, “force on bolt shank”, “interference fit”, “thermal gradient” and “initial stress method”. Explicit and implicit analyses are used for transient response and preload generation in bolt respectively. Time history and shock response spectrum are used to compare experimental and simulation results. Simulation …

Design And Analysis For Melt Casting Metallic Fuel Pins Incorporating Volatile Actinides, Xiaolong Wu Aug 2002

Design And Analysis For Melt Casting Metallic Fuel Pins Incorporating Volatile Actinides, Xiaolong Wu

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Fundamental issues related to the selection of a metallic fuel casting furnace design are presented and discussed including heating mechanisms, casting issues, crucible design, and issues related to the mass transport of americium. The process of evaluating all of these different criteria is undertaken to select a concept that would have the greatest chance of success for casting americium in a metallic fuel rod. Based on this evaluation process, a concept for the casting of metallic fuel pins containing high vapor pressure materials is selected and discussed. The important physics of this concept include mass transport of americium from the …
