A Constructal Approach To The Design Of Inflected Airplane Wings, Shanae Powell Mar 2019

A Constructal Approach To The Design Of Inflected Airplane Wings, Shanae Powell

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Aeroelastic instabilities such as flutter can be accurately captured by state-of-the-art aeroelastic analysis methods and tools. However, these tools and methods fall short in exposing the reasons behind the occurrence of such instabilities. In this research, the constructal law is used to discover the main cause of the variation in the flutter speed and stress distribution for inflected aircraft wings when compared to its uninflected counterpart. This law considers the design as a physics phenomenon and uses an evolutionary flow principle to explain and predict the occurrence of energy flow configurations (i.e. the flow of stresses throughout the structure).

An aspect of the present disclosure is a system that includes a thermal valve having a first position and a second position, a heat transfer fluid, and an energy converter where, when in the first position, the thermal valve prevents the transfer of heat from the heat transfer fluid to the energy converter, and when in the second position, the thermal valve allows the transfer of heat from the heat transfer fluid to the energy converter, such that at least a portion of the heat transferred is converted to electricity by the energy converter.

Fluorescence Of Cdse/Zns Quantum Dots In Toluene: Effect Of Cyclic Temperature, Ting Chen, Weiling Luan, Shaofu Zhang, Fuqian Yang Feb 2019

Fluorescence Of Cdse/Zns Quantum Dots In Toluene: Effect Of Cyclic Temperature, Ting Chen, Weiling Luan, Shaofu Zhang, Fuqian Yang

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Quantum dots (QDs) are the potential material for the application in optical thermometry, and have been successfully applied to solar cells, LEDs, bio-labeling, structural health monitoring, etc. In this paper, we study the fluorescence properties of CdSe/ZnS QDs in toluene under the action of heating-cooling cycles. The experimental results show that, in a heating-cooling cycle, increasing temperature causes red-shift of the emission peak and the decrease of the PL intensity, and decreasing temperature causes blue-shift of the emission peak and the increase of the PL intensity. The surface structures of the QDs likely are dependent on the cycle numbers, which …

Evaluating Moisture Control Of Variable-Capacity Heat Pumps In Mechanically Ventilated, Low-Load Homes In Climate Zone 2a, Florida Solar Energy Center, Eric Martin

FSEC Energy Research Center®

The well-sealed, highly insulated building enclosures constructed by today's home building industry coupled with efficient lighting and appliances are achieving significantly reduced heating and cooling loads. These low-load homes can present a challenge when selecting appropriate space-conditioning equipment. Conventional, fixed-capacity heating and cooling equipment is often oversized for small homes, causing increased first costs and operating costs. Even if fixed-capacity equipment can be properly specified for peak loads, it remains oversized for use during much of the year. During these part-load cooling hours, oversized equipment meets the target dry-bulb temperatures very quickly, often without sufficient opportunity for moisture control. The …

Proposed Delivery And Return Water Temperatures For Dartmouth College Hot Water Network, Storm Mata Jan 2019

Proposed Delivery And Return Water Temperatures For Dartmouth College Hot Water Network, Storm Mata

ENGS 86 Independent Projects (AB Students)

This study aimed to verify the viability of the planned hot water heating network at Dartmouth, and determine the necessary hot water radiator areas needed to satisfy the empirically-determined heat demand for buildings on campus, using 5 year of steam con- sumption data. In order to verify viability, the pressure and temperature of the delivery steam and return condensate of the current heating network were used to find the amount of heat delivered per pound of steam to campus. The above-mentioned steam consump- tion data were then used to find the max heat demand for the past five years and …

Economic Appraisal Of Hybrid Solar-Biomass Thermophotovoltaic Power Generation, C. M. Iftekhar Hussain Cmih, Aidan Duffy, Brian Norton Jan 2019

Economic Appraisal Of Hybrid Solar-Biomass Thermophotovoltaic Power Generation, C. M. Iftekhar Hussain Cmih, Aidan Duffy, Brian Norton

Conference Papers

The techno-economic parameters that influence the commercial deployment of hybrid thermophotovoltaic (TPV) solar power generation are determined using annual system simulations. It has been found that a TPV cell price of E5/cm2 or less together with a TPV operating temperature under 800°C is required for a hybrid solar–biomass TPV power plant to be economically competitive with the state-of-the-art hybrid solar–biomass Rankine cycle power plants.

Faculty of Science & Technology (THEi)

In this study, hydrothermal synthesis of sea urchin-like NiCo2O4 was successfully demonstrated by a versatile charge-driven self-assembly strategy using positively charged poly(diallydimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) molecules. Physical characterizations implied that sea urchin-like microspheres of ~ 2.5 μm in size were formed by self-assembly of numerous nanoneedles with a typical dimension of ~ 100 nm in diameter. Electrochemical performance study confirmed that sea urchin-like NiCo2O4 exhibited high reversible capacity of 663 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at current density of 100 mA g−1. Rate capability indicated that average capacities of 1085, 1048, 926, 642, 261, and 86 mAh g−1 could be achieved …

Performance Analysis Of A Thermal-Driven Tubular Direct Contact Membrane Distillation System, Abdellah Sharifian, Mehdi Khiadani, Ataollah Nosrati

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This paper examines the performance of a thermal-driven tubular direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) system theoretically and experimentally. A multi-step mathematical model was developed to predict the freshwater productivity of the tubular DCMD module applicable for both small and large-scale applications by considering the changes in the operational variables along the membrane’s length. The proposed model was verified by building an experimental rig which was tested under different operational conditions. The results showed that keeping the mass flow rates in the hot and cold channels either near the end or beyond the transition range of the flows results in higher …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The invention of heat pipe solar collectors (HPSCs) is considered as an immense step forward towards solving the challenges of conventional solar thermal systems. Their unique qualities have acted as a great motivation for researchers to focus their studies on HPSCs and their applications. A considerable share of these studies has been allocated to theoretical studies due to several technical and economic reasons. However, to the authors’ knowledge and despite many valuable efforts in this field, there is no review paper available to summarise the relevant proposed and developed theoretical models to date and identifies the research gaps in this …

Planning For Change In The Electric Power Industry: A Primer For Transactive Energy Scenario Development, Joshua Binus

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

The electric power industry and its associated infrastructures (a.k.a. "the grid") are evolving from centrally planned, organized, and operated networks of players, technologies, and resources to systems of systems that are increasingly digitized and distributed in their operation and innovative capacity. Subsequently, strategic planners and technology managers associated with the electric power industry are faced with a range of scenarios to evaluate, including one that considers the emergence of commercialized transactive energy systems in the coming ten-year time horizon. The crafting of a transactive energy scenario can help inform technology innovation and management efforts that benefit consumers, electricity providers, and …
