Building energy simulation is of considerable interest and benefit for architects, engineers, and urban planners. Only recently has it become possible to develop integrated energy models for clusters of buildings in urban areas. Simulating energy consumption of the built environment on a relatively large scale (e.g., such as a neighborhood) will be necessary to obtain more reliable results, since building energy parameters are influenced by characteristics of the nearby environment. Therefore, the construction of a 3-D model of urban built areas with detail of the near-building environment should enhance simulation approaches and provide more accurate results. This paper describes the …

We present an automated mechanism that can detect and issue warnings of machinery threat such as the presence of construction vehicles on pipeline right-of-way. The proposed scheme models the human visual perception concepts to extract fine details of objects by utilizing the corners and gradient histogram information in pyramid levels. Two real-world aerial image datasets are used for testing and evaluation.

Performance of annular fins of different shapes subject to locally variable heat transfer coefficient is investigated experimentally in this paper. The performance of the fin expressed in terms of fin efficiency, effectiveness and thermal resistance as a function of the ambient temperature and fin geometry parameters has been presented in the literature in the form of curves known as the fin-efficiency curves for different types of fins without use the diamond shape, but in the present work, we study this shape with others. However, for cases in which the heat transfer from the fin is dominated by natural convection, the …

The opaque nature of many multiphase flows has long posed a significant challenge to the visualization and measurement of desired characteristics. To overcome this difficulty, X-ray imaging, both in the form of radiography and computed tomography, has been used successfully to quantify various multiphase flow phenomena. However, the relatively low temporal resolution of typical X-ray systems limit their use to moderately slow flows and time-average values. This paper discusses the development of an X-ray detection system capable of high-speed radiographic imaging that can be used to visualize multiphase flows. Details of the hardware will be given and then applied to …

Non-Destructive Testing (Ndt) By Laser Shearography And Fringe Projection, Xiaoran Chen, Morteza Khaleghi, Ivo Dobrev, Cosme Furlong

Non-destructive testing (NDT) is critical to many precision industries because it can provide important information about the structural health of critical components and systems. In addition, NDT can also identify situations that could potentially lead to critical failures. Specifically, NDT by optical methods have become popular because of their non-contact and non-invasive nature. Shearography is a high-resolution optical NDT method for identification and characterization of structural defects in components and has gained wide acceptance over the last decade; however, as a drawback, shearography cannot locate the position of defects in 3D. To overcome this limitation, we are combining shearography with …
Development Of A Novel Handheld Device For Active Compensation Of Physiological Tremor, Abhijit Saxena
Development Of A Novel Handheld Device For Active Compensation Of Physiological Tremor, Abhijit Saxena

In microsurgery, the human hand imposes certain limitations in accurately positioning the tip of a device such as scalpel. Any errors in the motion of the hand make microsurgical procedures difficult and involuntary motions such as hand tremors can make some procedures significantly difficult to perform. This is particularly true in the case of vitreoretinal microsurgery. The most familiar source of involuntary motion is physiological tremor. Real-time compensation of tremor is, therefore, necessary to assist surgeons to precisely position and manipulate the tool-tip to accurately perform a microsurgery. In this thesis, a novel handheld device (AID) is described for compensation …
Why Patent Drawings Get Rejected Part2, Bernadette Marshall
Why Patent Drawings Get Rejected Part2, Bernadette Marshall
Bernadette Marshall
Last time we discussed why drawings might get rejected. The following are real rejection/objection examples compiled from multiple notices. Each includes our suggested solution. Informal utility drawings; these may include hand drawn sketches, pencil drawings, photographs, photocopies of photographs and drawings with hand written text & numerals. -Notice from USPTO; “All sheets must be reasonably free from cracks, creases, and folds. Each sheet must be reasonably free from erasures and must be free from alterations, overwritings, and interlineations”4. -remedy, formalize the drawings. This usually involves tracing the informal drawings using a CAD program ensuring compliance with all USPTO drawing rules. …

Oxy-reforming is emerging as an interesting alternative to conventional methods of hydrogen generation. The current article characterises this process through analysis of individual reactions: SMR (steam methane reforming), WGS (water gas shift) and CPO (catalytic partial oxidation). Analyses relate to optimisation of thermal conditions thus enabling cost-effectivenes of the process.
Preliminary Numerical Analysis Of Valve Fatigue In A Checkball Pump For Driveline Applicatio, Yang Yang
Preliminary Numerical Analysis Of Valve Fatigue In A Checkball Pump For Driveline Applicatio, Yang Yang

Recent studies have shown that hydraulic hybrid drivelines can significantly improve fuel savings for medium weight vehicles on stop-start drivecycles. In a series hydraulic hybrid (SHH) architecture, the conventional mechanical driveline is replaced with a hydraulic driveline that decouples vehicle speed from engine speed. In an effort to increase the design space, this paper explores the use of a fixed displacement check-ball piston pump in an SHH driveline. This paper identifies the potential life-limiting components of a fixed-displacement checkball piston pump and examines the likelihood of surface fatigue in the check valves themselves. Numerical analysis in ABAQUS software suggests that …
