Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical Engineering
Literature has shown that 3D printed composites may have highly anisotropic mechanical properties due to variation in microstructure as a result of filament deposition process. Laminate composite theory, which is already used for composite products, has been proposed as an effective method for quantifying these mechanical characteristics. Starting with the analysis of comparing the printing orientation of premanufactured carbon fiber reinforced filament, the mechanical properties of 3D printed objects were examined. In the orthopedic and cardiovascular fields there is a growing interest for biodegradable implants, which can be naturally degraded in the body environment over time so that no extraction surgery is required. These implants must be designed to maintain their strength until the fracture has healed in the body, which could be influenced by many factors such as -the patient’s age, activities, body weight, pre-existing conditions etc. Hence, an ideal implant design should be done on a patient-by-patient basis. Through sound, scent, and touch, this immersive installation encourages a rediscovery of the elemental experiences of life. This project focuses on the design and fabrication of an experimental setup for orthopedic-tool testing, tailored for a surgical instrumentation company. The multifaceted project encompasses a literature review, conceptual design, prototyping, and rigorous testing, resulting in a versatile control system capable of assessing various orthopedic tools, including bone drills, saws, burrs, and power handpieces.
Orthopedic surgical procedures (which include cutting and/or drilling into bone) often need to be performed on bones for faster recovery. The drilling and cutting process can cause an increase in temperature at the cutting site which can cause bone necrosis. The tools also need to be …
