A Label-Free High Throughput Resistive-Pulse Sensor For Simultaneous Differentiation And Measurement Of Multiple Particle-Laden Analytes, Ashish Jagtiani, Rupesh Sawant, Jiang Zhe
Dr. Jiang Zhe
We describe an all-electronic, label-free, resistive-pulse sensor that utilizes multiple microchannels for parallel detection, counting and differentiation of multiple biological particles simultaneously. Four particle solutions, including 20 µm and 40 µm polymethacrylate particles, Juniper Scopulorum (Rocky Mountain Juniper) pollen and Populus deltidoes (Eastern Cottonwood) pollen, were loaded to the four peripheral reservoirs, respectively, and were driven to the central reservoir through four microchannels, all operating simultaneously for particle detection and counting. Experiments demonstrated that this sensor was able to differentiate and count multiple particle solutions simultaneously through its four microchannels fabricated on polymer membranes. Thus the sensing throughput has been …

Effect Of Processing Conditions On The Development Of Morphology In Clay Nanoparticle Filled Nylon 6 Fibers, Zeynep Ergungor, Mukerrem Cakmak, Celal Batur
Dr. Celal Batur
The effect of melt temperature on the phase behavior and preferential orientation development in Nylon 6/montmorillonite nanocomposites were investigated at melt spinning temperatures ranging from 230° to 250°C. The fibers were found to exhibit mostly γ crystalline form that is typical of Nylon 6 filled with montmorillonite nanoparticles. At higher take-up speeds α-crystals begin to appear in the crystalline phase. The presence of nanoparticles was found to impart substantial chain orientation levels even at low to moderate take up speeds reaching a plateau at moderate take up speeds. This was attributed to the increased spin line stress in the presence …

Zwitteration Of Dextran: A Facile Route To Integrate Antifouling, Switchability And Optical Transparency Into Natural Polymers, Bin Cao, Linlin Li, Haiyan Wu, Qiong Tang, Bingbing Sun, He Dong, Jiang Zhe, Gang Cheng
Dr. Jiang Zhe
This communication reports a facile method for zwitteration of dextran with carboxybetaine (CB), which integrates superior antifouling properties, switchability between zwitterionic and cationic forms, as well as enhanced optical transparency into one polysaccharide material. This study provides a new avenue for generating multifunctional zwitterionic CB materials in situ.

Label-Free Biomarker Assay In A Microresistive Pulse Sensor Via Immunoaggregation, Yu Han, Haiyan Wu, Fan Li, Gang Cheng, Jiang Zhe
Dr. Jiang Zhe
We present a label-free biomarker detection method based on immunoaggregation and resistive pulse sensing technology. In this approach, target biomarkers and antibody (Ab)-functionalized microparticles are mixed to form biomarker–microparticle aggregates. A resistive pulse sensor is then used to measure the sizes and count the number of aggregates. The measured volume fraction of the aggregates represents the concentration of the targeted biomarker. In our tests, human ferritin, used as a biomarker, triggered the aggregation of antiferritin Ab-functionalized microparticles in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). The volume fraction of aggregates increased with the increased ferritin concentration. We also demonstrated the detection of human ferritin …

Single-And Multi-Hole Baffles-A Heat Transfer And Fluid Flow Control For Hydrothermal Growth, Edward Evans, Hongmin Li, Guo-Xiang Wang
Dr. Guo-Xiang Wang
Hydrothermal solution growth is an important technique to grow high-quality single crystals. An autoclave, a closed cylindrical low-carbon steel vessel, is used to grow the large size crystals. A baffle located at the median height divides an autoclave into two chambers. Previous numerical studies indicate that the buoyancy-driven flow within an autoclave is very sensitive to the temperatures on the wall established by the heating. Baffles are required to establish the conditions for growth of high quality single crystals. This paper presents a numerical study of the effects of various baffles on the fluid flow and temperature fields in an …

Three-Dimensional Flow Of Solution In An Industry-Size Hydrothermal Autoclave Subjected To Non-Uniform Heating Effects Of A Baffle On Flow And Temperature Separation, Hongmin Li, Guo-Xiang Wang, Edward Evans
Dr. Guo-Xiang Wang
Hydrothermal growth takes place in a closed cylindrical container called an autoclave. Natural convection flow of an aqueous solution at a high temperature and a high pressure carries the nutrient. The high temperature growth condition and the natural convection flow are maintained by two independently controlled electrical heaters on the outside of the autoclave. In practice, the heating is circumferentially non-uniform. Many theoretical and numerical studies, however, assume axially symmetric heating conditions. This paper presents a numerical analysis of the three-dimensional heat transfer and fluid flow with a non-uniform heating condition. The analysis is based on an industry-size autoclave with …

Optical Cell For Combinatorial In Situ Raman Spectroscopic Measurements Of Hydrogen Storage Materials At High Pressures And Temperatures, Jason Hattrick-Simpers, Wilbur Hurst, Sesha Srinivasan, James Maslar
Jason R. Hattrick-Simpers
An optical cell is described for high-throughput backscattering Raman spectroscopic measurements of hydrogen storagematerials at pressures up to 10 MPa and temperatures up to 823 K. High throughput is obtained by employing a 60 mm diameter × 9 mm thick sapphire window, with a corresponding 50 mm diameter unobstructed optical aperture. To reproducibly seal this relatively large window to the cell body at elevated temperatures and pressures, a gold o-ring is employed. The sample holder-to-window distance is adjustable, making this cell design compatible with optical measurement systems incorporating lenses of significantly different focal lengths, e.g., microscope objectives and single element …
