Improved Fabrication For Micromirror Arrays, Enoc Flores

Micromirror devices which consisted of one SU-8 2050 layer, two different exposures, and a series of metal depositions were constructed and evaluated. By varying the exposure, a micromirror structure was fabricated with different thicknesses, a ratio of 1.083 µm/(mJ/cm2) was found. The initial design consisted of four layers. The pillar was made of one SU-8 layer, and the top portion had three layers in the following order: gold, SU-8, and gold. Potential future use on Earth-orbiting satellites calls for investigation into the suitability of GeSn based photonic devices in high energy proton environments. The electroluminescence (EL) intensity of Ge1-xSnx (x = 0, 0.02, 0.069, and 0.094) light emitting diodes was measured before and after irradiation by 2 MeV protons at relatively high fluence levels. The results showed that GeSn devices with higher Sn content were up to 10 times more resistant against proton displacement damage than the pure Ge (x = 0) devices. As Sn concentration increased, the band gap decreased, and V-P hole trap energy level moved further from the …

Previously, Transformational Optics (TO) has been used as a foundation for designing cylindrical cloaks. The TO method uses a coordinate transform to dictate an anisotropic material parameter gradient in a cylinder coating that guides waves around the cylinder to reduce the Radar Cross Section (RCS). The problem is that the material parameters required for the TO cloak are not physically realizable and thus must be approximated. This problem is compounded by the fact that any approximation deviates from the ideal design and will allow fields to penetrate the cloak layer and interact with the object to be cloaked. This document addresses two major obstacles facing metamaterial development: uncertainty in the characterization of electromagnetic field behavior in metamaterial structures and the relatively small operational bandwidth of metamaterial structures. To address the first obstacle, a new method to characterize electromagnetic field behavior in a metamaterial is presented. This new method is a bistatic radar cross section (RCS) measurement technique. RCS measurements are well-suited to measuring bulk metamaterial samples because they show frequency dependence of scattering angles and offer common postprocessing techniques that can be useful for visualizing results.
