International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Incorporation of fly ash in cementitious systems containing ordinary portland cement (OPC) increases their long-term strength and durability. However, replacement of cement by fly ash also reduces the heat of hydration of such systems and reduces early-age strength development. The reduced rate of strength development can increase the risk of durability problems, e.g. scaling, in cases when young concrete is exposed to low temperatures and deicing chemicals. This study investigated the potential of nano-titanium dioxide (nano-TiO2) particles to modify the hydration kinetics of fly ash pastes and compressive strength development of corresponding mortars cured under low (4°C) and …

The Degradation Of Concrete Tunnel Wall Panels: A Case Study, Christian Paglia
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Concrete panels are often used along tunnel walls for technical and aesthetic purposes. Generally, the environment in contact with such materials is aggressive. Emission gases from the vehicles, sulphates, chlorides coming from the winter salt spreading, high temperature and humidity promote an acceleration of the deterioration phenomena. In this work 30 years old concrete panels placed along a 16 km long highway tunnel across the Alps were investigated with respect to their durability. The focus was given to the tunnel entrance zone. This region of the tunnel exhibited a critical environment with respect to the durability of the cementitious material …

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
This paper focuses on the rheological properties of 3D printed magnesium potassium phosphate cements (MKPCs) with different magnesium-to-phosphate (M/P) mass ratio, MgO fineness and supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) types. The variable shear rate tests were used to monitor the extrudability. The highest slope of the evolution of storage modulus (G') and the maximum static yield stress (Mτs) value were used as an indication of the rigidification rate. The increased M/P mass ratio, MgO fineness and SCMs addition resulted in the promoted structural build-up of 3D printed MKPCs. The consistency between the evolution of G' and Mτs with …

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
The mechanical and a.c. electrical properties of a new varietal of engineered cementitious composite (ECC) incorporating conductive inclusions are presented. Electrical measurements were undertaken over a wide frequency range while curing and when under uniaxial tensile loading to study the influence of ongoing hydration and multiple microcrack formation on the composite electrical impedance. When presented in Nyquist format, the work shows that conductive inclusions reduce the bulk resistance of the composite while enhancing its polarizability, transforming the classic, single-arc bulk response of typical cement-based materials to a two-arc response. The bulk resistance was shown to increase with time and damage, …

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
As exposures to chloride-salts are known as prime factors causing initiation and continuity of corrosion-process of steel reinforcement bars in reinforced concrete (RC) structures, it has always been a major concern for designers considering the requirements of structural-durability for targeted-service life of RC-structures in aggressively corrosive environments typically prevalent in coastal regions. Research works previously reported by the researchers have modeled corrosion-process in terms of corrosion-current density, and it was realized that concrete-mixtures design quality and characteristics, degree of exposures to corrosive-agents such as chloride salts, and protective-concrete cover-thickness are now known beyond doubt to be determinant factors as regards …

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
The heterogeneity of a cement-based material results in a random spatial distribution of carbonation depth, which may significantly affect the mechanical properties and durability of the material. Currently, there is a lack of both experimental and numerical investigations aiming at a statistical understanding of this important phenomenon. This paper presents both experimental and numerical supercritical carbonation test results of concrete blocks. The random fields of porosity and two-dimension random aggregate model of concrete were proposed for the simulation. The carbonation depths are measured and distributed along the carbonation boundary by the proposed rapid image processing technique, which are then statistically …

Focused thinking on the possibility of early-age testing of concrete for long-term durability started in earnest during the late 1980’s in South Africa. Through sustained research, development and trial implementation on construction projects, three durability index (DI) tests have emerged, two of which have been adopted as national standard test methods for concrete construction, the remaining one being prepared a national standard. In this paper we review the guiding or foundational principles that directed the development of these DI tests, with a view to assessing the appropriateness and relevance of these guiding principles to modern concretes. The last 30 years …

The root cause of distress in two different concrete structures made from carbonate coarse aggregates that fit the textural and compositional criteria cited for ACR was found to be caused by ASR, not ACR. Stereo-optical examination and transmitted polarized light microscopy (PLM) analysis showed that the concretes contain some dark gray, fine-grained argillaceous dolomitic coarse aggregates in which secondary white deposit filling the cracks extending from these aggregates into the paste (as well as lining air voids) is ASR gel. Back scattered electron (BSE) imaging with EDS spectra and x-ray elemental mappings, clearly confirm that the white secondary deposits consist …

Concretes used in marine environment are generally under the cyclic effect of CO2 and chloride ions (Cl-). To date, the influence of carbonation on ingress of chloride ions in concretes has been widely studied; in comparison, study on the influence of Cl- on the progress of carbonation is limited. During the study, concretes were exposed to independent and combined mechanisms of carbonation and chloride ingress regimes. Profiles of apparent pH and chloride concentration were used to indicate the progress of carbonation and ingress of Cl- in concretes. From the apparent pH profile, a carbonation front …

A new experimental method by utilizing elliptical rings to replace circular rings recommended by ASTM and AASHTO was explored for assessing cracking potential of concrete and other cement-based materials under restrained condition. A series of thin and thick elliptical concrete rings were tested alongside circular ones until cracking. Cracking age, position, and propagation were carefully examined. It is found that thin elliptical rings with appropriate geometry can initiate cracks quicker than circular ones, which is desirable for accelerating the ring test. However, thick elliptical rings seem not to exhibit a desirable geometry effect of accelerating ring test compared with circular …

Influence Of Controlled Permeability Formwork On The Permeability Of Concrete, Wei Lin, Q. Jiang, J. Liu, J. Liu
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Corrosion of steel reinforcement related to the intrusion of chloride ion is still the main threats to the durability of concrete structure, especially in marine environment. For the purpose of delaying the Cl− concentration at the surface of steel reinforcement reaching the critical value leading to initial corrosion, the permeability of concrete is usually improved by optimizing the concrete mixture to achieve high compatibility as well as optimized pore structure. In recent years, controlled permeability formwork (CPF) which was originally developed to obtain much smoother surface of the concrete proves to promote the service performance of the concrete by …

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
This paper focuses on examining the pore structure of a cementitious paste made with a calcium silicate (wollastonite) that reacts with carbon dioxide and water to form a hardened solid. The pore structure of the hardened solid has been characterized using vapor sorption and desorption, low-temperature differential scanning calorimetry (LT-DSC), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The total porosity was also measured using mass measurement in oven-dry and vacuum-saturated conditions. Evidence exists that support the hypothesis that the solid has two main pore sizes: large macropores (>10 nm) appear to form between the initial calcium silicate particles and small micropores …
