Inhomogeneous Composite Design For High Energy Impact Resistance Through Computational Design, Physical Testing And Analysis, And Mathematical Modeling, Trenin Bayless

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

Research in the development of impact resistant materials has been an expanding field for the better part of a hundred years. The development of a light penetration resistant and man-portable system that can resist extreme quantities of kinetic energy has been a subject of substantial study. In particular, the use of composite materials, polymers, ceramics, and metals has been critical to the development of the field. With the advent of complex computational programs for defining material properties, it has become possible to use simulations as a starting point for the development of next generation armored systems. To that end, it …

Experimental Investigation And Thermal Modeling On Electro Discharge Drilling Of Pcd, Farnaz Nourbakhsh Dec 2015

Experimental Investigation And Thermal Modeling On Electro Discharge Drilling Of Pcd, Farnaz Nourbakhsh

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study presents an experimental investigation and finite element simulation of Electro Discharge Drilling (ED-Drilling) of Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD). PCD has many outstanding properties including uniformly high hardness, high wear resistance and strong corrosion which are the main causes of widely using PCD. While PCD has many advantages and an important role in industrial applications, its high level of hardness and wear resistance cause this material to be difficult to form and machine by using traditional machining methods. EDM as a nontraditional machining process is an effective method among other non-traditional methods for PCDs due to its low cost and …

Numerical Modeling Of Continuous Flow Microwave Heating - Coupling Of High Frequency Electromagnetism With Fluid Flow And Heat Transfer, Deepti Salvi Jan 2008

Numerical Modeling Of Continuous Flow Microwave Heating - Coupling Of High Frequency Electromagnetism With Fluid Flow And Heat Transfer, Deepti Salvi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study focused on numerical and experimental investigation of continuous flow microwave heating. A numerical model was developed to predict the temperature of a liquid product heated in a continuous-flow focused microwave system by coupling electromagnetism, fluid flow, and heat transfer in two different software packages (ANSYS Multiphysics 9.0 and COMSOL Multiphysics 3.4). The temperature and energy distributions simulated in ANSYS were verified against other numerical studies published in the literature. Comparison of the simulated temperature in ANSYS with experimental data for salt water of two different salinities showed good agreement. To simulate the experimental conditions more accurately, a comprehensive …
