An Artificial Immune Algorithm For Minimizing Total Cost Of Resources In The Resource Constrained Project Scheduling Problem, Ramin Golestaneh, Azizollah Jafari

university of science & culture

Abstract— In this article, an Artificial Immune Algorithm (AIA) for minimizing total costs of both renewable and non-renewable resources in the Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP) is presented. We assume renewable resources that are limited in number, are restricted to very expensive equipment and machines, therefore they are rented and used in other projects, and are not available in all project periods. In other words, there is a predefined ready date as well as a due date for each renewable resource type, so that no resource is used before its ready date. However, resources are permitted to be used after …

Challenges And Prospects Of Processes Utilising Carbonic Anhydrase For Co2 Separation, Patrycja Szeligiewicz, Wojciech M. Budzianowski

Wojciech Budzianowski

This article provides an analysis of processes for separation CO2 by using carbonic anhydrase enzyme with particular emphasis on reactive-membrane solutions. Three available processes are characterised. Main challenges and prospects are given. It is found that in view of numerous challenges practical applications of these processes will be difficult in near future. Further research is therefore needed for improving existing processes through finding methods for eliminating their main drawbacks such as short lifetime of carbonic anhydrase or low resistance of reactive membrane systems to impurities contained in flue gases from power plants.

Breaking The Theft-Chain-Cycle: Property Marking As A Defensive Tool, William J. Bailey, David J. Brooks Jan 2013

Breaking The Theft-Chain-Cycle: Property Marking As A Defensive Tool, William J. Bailey, David J. Brooks

Bill Bailey

The theft of property and its associated impact effects many parts of society. For example, a considerable amount of resources are expended in trying to reduce property theft, as such crime engenders both a financial and emotional impact (Grabosky, 1995, p. 1) on those involved. Factors such as fear of crime, increased insurance premiums and victimization are all outcomes of property crime. Much of the past research has focused on the mitigation of such crimes, collectively termed as ‘crime prevention’. Crime prevention are “any actions designed to reduce the actual level of crime and/or the perceived crime” (S.P. Lab, 2010, …

Experimental Verification Of The Linear Relationship Between Stress And The Reciprocal Of The Peak Barkhausen Voltage In Astm A36 Steel, Orfeas Kypris, Ikenna Nlebedim, David Jiles Jan 2012

Experimental Verification Of The Linear Relationship Between Stress And The Reciprocal Of The Peak Barkhausen Voltage In Astm A36 Steel, Orfeas Kypris, Ikenna Nlebedim, David Jiles

Orfeas Kypris

This study presents an experimental validation of a model theory for determining the relationship between a nondestructive measurement parameter and a property of interest. It was found that the reciprocal of the peak envelope amplitude of the Barkhausen emission voltage follows a linear relationship with stress. A linear relationship between stress and the reciprocal of the root mean square voltage was also obtained. These observations represent an important step towards improving the use of Barkhausen signals for magnetic non-destructive evaluation of stress as a function of depth in ferromagnetic load bearing structures.

Conceptual Design For Treatment Of Mining And Metallurgical Wastewaters Which Contains Arsenic And Antimony, Zeljko J. Kamberovic Jan 2012

Conceptual Design For Treatment Of Mining And Metallurgical Wastewaters Which Contains Arsenic And Antimony, Zeljko J. Kamberovic

Zeljko J Kamberovic

This paper presents a preliminary design for treatment of mining and metallurgical wastewaters (MMW) from the basin of antimony “Zajača“, which contains high concentrations of arsenic and antimony. MMW have been investigated in laboratory, due to large difference in concentrations of pollutants. Metallurgical wastewaters were treated using iron (II)-sulfate and lime milk used to adjust the pH value at 7. After chemical treatment of metallurgical wastewater and its joining with mining wastewater, residual amount of arsenic in water was below maximum allowed concentrations, while the concentration of antimony, remained above the maximum allowed value. The final phase of purification process …

Hydrometallurgical Process For Extraction Of Metals From Electronic Waste-Part Ii: Development Of The Processes For The Recovery Of Copper From Printed Circuit Boards (Pcb), Zeljko J. Kamberovic

Zeljko J Kamberovic

Rapid technological development induces increase of generation of used electric and electronic equipment waste, causing a serious threat to the environment. Waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs), as the main component of the waste, are significant source of base and precious metals, especially copper and gold. In recent years, most of the activities on the recovery of base and precious metals from waste PCBs are focused on hydrometallurgical techniques as more exact, predictable and easily controlled compared to conventional pyrometallurgical processes. In this research essential aspects of the hydrometallurgical processing of waste of electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) using sulfuric acid …

Cavitation Modelling Based On Eulerian-Eulerian Multiphase Flow, Rachid Bannari Ph.D Jun 2011

Cavitation Modelling Based On Eulerian-Eulerian Multiphase Flow, Rachid Bannari Ph.D

Rachid BANNARI

Cavitation is a physical phenomenon encountered in the normal operation of hydraulic turbines. It can lead to loss in efficiency, vibrations and blade erosion damages. It is crucial to accurately predict cavitation development and evolution to make confident predictive results for hydraulic turbines in a cavitating regime. The cavity closure is a critical region that is characterized by its unsteady and unstable behavior. In this region, liquid and vapor are highly mixed and experienced a strong interaction between the cavity and the outer flow. Most of the published work is based on the mixture multiphase model. An important limitation of …

Transferts De Chaleur Dans Un Réacteur Thermochimique Solaire Muni D’Un Récepteur Volumique Poreux, Hernando Romero Paredes Rubio

Hernando Romero Paredes Rubio

Metalurgia Extractiva Y Política Nacional, Fathi Habashi Jan 2011

Metalurgia Extractiva Y Política Nacional, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

Should a country export its mineral wealth in form of concentrates or should it locally treat its ores to produce metals as final products? In the past centuries pyrometallurgy was the only route to extract metals from ores and this required a large capital investment many countries could not afford to raise. This situation encouraged marketing of concentrates. Today, metallurgists have the option to use the hydrometallurgical route to process ores and concentrates at a reasonable capital investment. This opened the way to the possibility of processing ores locally. When need arises to increase production new units can be added …

Adaptive Discrete-Time Controller Design With Neural Network For Hypersonic Flight Vehicle Via Back-Stepping, Bin Xu Jan 2011

Adaptive Discrete-Time Controller Design With Neural Network For Hypersonic Flight Vehicle Via Back-Stepping, Bin Xu

Bin Xu

In this article, the adaptive neural controller in discrete time is investigated for the longitudinal dynamics of a generic hypersonic flight vehicle. The dynamics are decomposed into the altitude subsystem and the velocity subsystem. The altitude subsystem is transformed into the strict-feedback form from which the discrete-time model is derived by the first-order Taylor expansion. The virtual control is designed with nominal feedback and neural network (NN) approximation via back-stepping. Meanwhile, one adaptive NN controller is designed for the velocity subsystem. To avoid the circular construction problem in the practical control, the design of coefficients adopts the upper bound instead …

Adaptive Neural Control Based On Hgo For Hypersonic Flight Vehicles, Bin Xu Jan 2011

Adaptive Neural Control Based On Hgo For Hypersonic Flight Vehicles, Bin Xu

Bin Xu

This paper describes the design of adaptive neural controller for the longitudinal dynamics of a generic hypersonic flight vehicle (HFV) which are decomposed into two functional systems, namely the altitude subsystem and the velocity subsystem. For each subsystem, one adaptive neural controller is investigated based on the normal output-feedback formulation. For the altitude subsystem, the high gain observer (HGO) is taken to estimate the unknown newly defined states. Only one neural network (NN) is employed to approximate the lumped uncertain system nonlinearity during the controller design which is considerably simpler than the ones based on back-stepping scheme with the strict-feedback …

Task Allocation For Multi-Spacecraft Cooperation Based On Estimation Of Distribution Algorithm, Bin Xu Jan 2011

Task Allocation For Multi-Spacecraft Cooperation Based On Estimation Of Distribution Algorithm, Bin Xu

Bin Xu

One two-stage task allocation strategy is proposed for multi-spacecraft cooperation during the long-range orbit transfer with two impulses. This paper focuses on the task value maximum and cost minimum optimization by assigning spacecraft to different task. At the first stage time and energy cost are considered based on the spacecraft dynamics. The optimization result is together with the target value as the factor for the task allocation model at the second stage. The optimization is processed separately in continuous and discrete time domain with estimation of distribution algorithm (EDA). Different task allocation mode is formulated and the strategy is verified …

Composite Control Based On Optimal Torque Control And Adaptive Kriging Control For The Crab Rover, Bin Xu Jan 2011

Composite Control Based On Optimal Torque Control And Adaptive Kriging Control For The Crab Rover, Bin Xu

Bin Xu

Terrainability is mostly dependant on the suspension mechanism and the control of a space rover. For the six wheeled CRAB rover, this paper presents the composite control design with torque control and adaptive Kriging control to improve the terrainability, somewhat related to minimizing heel slip. As CRAB is moving slowly, the torque control is processed by minimizing the variance of the required friction coefficient based on the static model. Adaptive Kriging control is used to track the commanded velocity. The system uncertainty is compensated by Kriging estimation based on the velocity dynamics. Experiment results with two different tires show the …

Adaptive Hypersonic Flight Control Via Back-Stepping And Kriging Estimation, Bin Xu Jan 2011

Adaptive Hypersonic Flight Control Via Back-Stepping And Kriging Estimation, Bin Xu

Bin Xu

This paper investigates the adaptive Kriging controller for the longitudinal dynamics of a generic hypersonic flight vehicle (HFV). For the altitude subsystem, the dynamics are transformed into the strict-feedback form where the backstepping scheme is employed. Considering the nonlinearity of the dynamics, the nominal feedback is included in the controller while Kriging system is designed to estimate the uncertainty. With the proposed controller, the almost surely bounded stability is guaranteed. The simulation study is presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed control approach.

Influence Of Energy Policy On The Rate Of Implementation Of Biogas Power Plants In Germany During The 2001-2010 Decade, Izabela Chasiak, Wojciech M. Budzianowski

Wojciech Budzianowski

The current article describes energy policy tools, which caused intensive development of biogas-based power generation in Germany during the 2001-2010 decade. The German system of financial support to biogas power plants is presented in details. It is shown that in Germany, i.e. in a country characterised by similar climate and potentials to renewable energy to Poland, biogas power plants cover 10,7% of electricity demands in 2010, while all renewable energy sources cover only 5,4% of electricity demands. It is emphasised that under favourable Polish energy policy, the development of biogas energy can be very rapid.

Leaching Mechanism Of Semiconducting Minerals, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

The mechanism of leaching of semiconducting minerals such as PbS, ZnS, UO2, etc., has been the subject of intensive speculation by hydrometallurgists in the early 1950s. The electrochemical mechanism proposed in 1970 by the author in volume 2 of his Principles of Extractive Metallurgy avoids the assumption of forming intermediate complexes that cannot be isolated or identified.

Metals: Typical And Less Typical, Transition And Inner Transition, Fathi Habashi Mar 2010

Metals: Typical And Less Typical, Transition And Inner Transition, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

While most chemists agree on what is a metal and what is a non-metal there is a disagreement with respect to what is a metalloid and what is a transition metal. It is believed that this problem can be solved if two new terms are adopted: typical and less typical metals. These new terms will also help reconcile the European Periodic Table versus the North American regarding numbering of groups as well as the IUPAC numbering which could be as well abandoned in favour of group names as will be shown in the manuscript.
