Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Research on cognitive radio systems has attracted much interest in the last 10 years. Cognitive radio is born as a paradigm and since then the idea has seen contribution from technical disciplines under different conceptual layers. Since then improvements on processing capabilities have supported the current achievements and even made possible to move some of them from the research arena to markets.

Cognitive radio implies a revolution that is even asking for changes in current business models, changes at the infrastructure levels, changes in legislation and requiring state of the art technology.

Spectrum sensing is maybe the most important part …

Digital Modulations Using The Universal Software Radio Peripheral, Daniel Keith Artis Jun 2011

Digital Modulations Using The Universal Software Radio Peripheral, Daniel Keith Artis

Electrical Engineering

Software defined radios (SDRs) are versatile systems that integrate hardware and software to create a reprogrammable wireless system. Due to the versatility and hardware requirements of a SDR, they are typically expensive and not always affordable for educational institutions. GNU Radio is a free software package that allows users to do signal processing on any computer using python and C++. Using the Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) board in conjunction with a standard personal computer (PC), a RF daughterboard, and the GNU Radio software, we can create a software defined radio that can transmit, receive, and process signals. Because the …

Wireless Communications And Cognitive Radio Transmissions Under Quality Of Service Constraints And Channel Uncertainty, Sami Akin May 2011

Wireless Communications And Cognitive Radio Transmissions Under Quality Of Service Constraints And Channel Uncertainty, Sami Akin

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In this thesis, we study wireless communications and cognitive radio transmissions under quality of service (QoS) constraints and channel uncertainty. Initially, we focus on a time-varying Rayleigh fading channel and assume that no prior channel knowledge is available at the transmitter and the receiver. We investigate the performance of pilot-assisted wireless transmission strategies. In particular, we analyze different channel estimation techniques, including single-pilot minimum mean-square-error (MMSE) estimation, and causal and noncausal Wiener filters, and analyze efficient resource allocation strategies. Subsequently, we study the training-based transmission and reception schemes over a priori unknown, Rayleigh fading relay channels in which the fading …

Exploration Of Spatial Diversity In Multi-Antenna Wireless Communication Systems, Shichuan Ma May 2011

Exploration Of Spatial Diversity In Multi-Antenna Wireless Communication Systems, Shichuan Ma

Computer and Electronics Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

With increasing demand on wireless internet and personal multimedia, the data rate of wireless communications is expected to increase dramatically. Future wireless networks face challenges of supporting data rates higher than one gigabits per second. Among various technologies, multi-antennas, also known as multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), are undoubtedly the most promising to enable higher data rates. By employing the extra degrees of freedom in the spatial domain, multi-antenna techniques enhance the wireless communication systems through array gain, spatial diversity, and spatial multiplexing. Although multi-antenna systems have been utilized for more than ten years, a thorough analysis of various aspects of multi-antenna …

Analytical Coexistence Benchmark For Assessing The Utmost Interference Tolerated By Ieee 802.20, Mouhamed Abdulla, Yousef R. Shayan Mar 2011

Analytical Coexistence Benchmark For Assessing The Utmost Interference Tolerated By Ieee 802.20, Mouhamed Abdulla, Yousef R. Shayan

Publications and Scholarship

Whether it is crosstalk, harmonics, or in-band operation of wireless technologies, interference between a reference system and a host of offenders is virtually unavoidable. In past contributions, a benchmark has been established and considered for coexistence analysis with a number of technologies including FWA, UMTS, and WiMAX. However, the previously presented model does not take into account the mobility factor of the reference node in addition to a number of interdependent requirements regarding the link direction, channel state, data rate and system factors; hence limiting its applicability for the MBWA (IEEE 802.20) standard. Thus, over diverse modes, in this correspondence …

Intelligibility Of Electrolarynx Speech Using A Novel Hands-Free Actuator, Brian Madden, Mark Nolan, Ted Burke, James Condron, Eugene Coyle Jan 2011

Intelligibility Of Electrolarynx Speech Using A Novel Hands-Free Actuator, Brian Madden, Mark Nolan, Ted Burke, James Condron, Eugene Coyle

Conference Papers

During voiced speech, the larynx provides quasi-periodic acoustic excitation of the vocal tract. In most electrolarynxes, mechanical vibrations are produced by a linear electromechanical actuator, the armature of which percusses against a metal or plastic plate at a frequency within the range of glottal excitation. In this paper, the intelligibility of speech produced using a novel hands-free actuator is compared to speech produced using a conventional electrolarynx. Two able-bodied speakers (one male, one female) performed a closed response test containing 28 monosyllabic words, once using a conventional electrolarynx and a second time using the novel design. The resulting audio recordings …

Wireless Physical-Layer Security Performance Of Uwb Systems, Miyong Ko Jan 2011

Wireless Physical-Layer Security Performance Of Uwb Systems, Miyong Ko

Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014

Traditionally, spread-spectrum systems have been employed to provide low probability-of-intercept (LPI) and low probability-of-detection (LPD) performances at the physical layer, but the messages transmitted over such a system are still encrypted with a powerful cipher to protect their secrecy. Our challenge is to find a solution to provide an additional level of security at the physical layer so that simple systems such as RFID tags with limited resources can be secure without using standard encryption. It has recently been suggested that the cryptographic security of the system can be enhanced by exploiting physical properties of UWB signals. With an eavesdropper …

Addressing/Exploiting Transceiver Imperfections In Wireless Communication Systems, Lihao Wang Jan 2011

Addressing/Exploiting Transceiver Imperfections In Wireless Communication Systems, Lihao Wang

Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014

This thesis consists of two research projects on wireless communication systems. In the first project, we propose a fast inphase and quadrature (I/Q) imbalance compensation technique for the analog quadrature modulators in direct conversion transmitters. The method needs no training sequence, no extra background data gathering process and no prior perfect knowledge of the envelope detector characteristics. In contrast to previous approaches, it uses points from both the linear and predictable nonlinear regions of the envelope detector to hasten convergence. We provide a least mean square (LMS) version and demonstrate that the quadrature modulator compensator converges.

In the second project, …

Separation Distance Reduction In Mimo Systems Using End-Fire Antenna Arrays, Amean Al_Safi Dec 2010

Separation Distance Reduction In Mimo Systems Using End-Fire Antenna Arrays, Amean Al_Safi

Amean S Al_Safi

The main problem in Multiple Input-Multiple Output (MIMO) systems is the separation distance between antennas which must be greater than or equal to half wavelength. Satisfying this separation is difficult or impossible especially at mobile communication, therefore this paper study the capability to reduce these separation distance by using End-Fire antenna arrays. Each antenna at the transmitter and receiver side is replaced by a set of antennas work as an array with a radiation pattern directed toward the axes of the arrays. The separation between elements in these arrays is fixed at quarter wavelength in order to have one main …

Dr. Rozita Teymourzadeh, CEng.

The need for wireless communication has driven the communication systems to high performance. However, the main bottleneck that affects the communication capability is the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), which is the core of most modulators. This paper presents FPGA implementation of pipeline digit-slicing multiplier-less radix 22 DIF (Decimation In Frequency) SDF (single path delay feedback) butterfly for FFT structure. The approach taken; in order to reduce computation complexity in butterfly multiplier, digit-slicing multiplier-less technique was utilized in the critical path of pipeline Radix-22 DIF SDF FFT structure. The proposed design focused on the trade-off between the speed and active silicon …

Optimised Toolbox For The Design Of Rotary Reluctance Motors, Grace I, Rozita Teymourzadeh, Bright S, Aravind Cv Dec 2010

Optimised Toolbox For The Design Of Rotary Reluctance Motors, Grace I, Rozita Teymourzadeh, Bright S, Aravind Cv

Dr. Rozita Teymourzadeh, CEng.

Operation of the rotary reluctance machine is highly affected due to the sequential attraction-repulsion principle of the adjacent phase excitation. The problem has been identified and addressed by various researchers in the past decades. Effective magnetic design is one way of minimizing the effect. However it is tedious and time consuming as the design procedure involve higher analytical derivation and calculations. This paper presents a simpler graphical user interface toolbox to use for the design of reluctance motors. The developed interface calculates the analytical values of the aligned, unaligned and intermediate inductance values so that the user can interpret the …
