Space-Time Adaptive Processing For Side-Looking Arrays With Platform Maneuver, John T. Buckreis

This research effort develops a space-time adaptive processing (STAP) radar data model for the side-looking (SL) array with platform maneuver. A primary assumption of most STAP models is the absence of platform maneuver during the coherent processing interval (CPI). This research abandons the platform stationarity assumption, allowing platform pitch, roll, and yaw during the CPI. The model developed characterizes platform maneuver effects on the clutter spectrum, examines Matched Filter (MF) output Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise-Ratio (SINR), and investigates maneuver impact on sample support homogeneity. Standard computational tools predicting frequency selective surface (FSS) performance model periodic structures as an infinite-by-infinite array of perfectly placed elements with perfect, identical dimensions, and with dielectric layers of uniform thickness and material composition. These models do not address perturbations caused by manufacturing tolerances of elements and dielectric layers, nor do they address edge effects caused by finite-by-finite dimensional arrays. The Monte Carlo Method was used to determine the effects of random variations in element dimension, placement, dielectric thickness, and dielectric material on FSS performance. Loop Gain Estimation For Adaptive Control, Jamey P. Sillence

The identification of a linear discrete-time control system's loop gain is addressed. The classical Kalman filter theory for state estimation in linear control systems is extended, and the control system's loop gain and state are jointly estimated. A rigorous analysis of the measurement situation under consideration yields explicit formulae for the loop gain's unbiased estimate and estimation error's covariance.

This thesis examines the effects of atmospheric turbulence-induced phase perturbations on the performance of ground-based Space-Time Adaptive Processing (STAP) systems. Both Fully Adaptive Joint Domain Optimum and Partially Adaptive Factored-Time Space processing methods are examined. This thesis concentrates on the turbulence effects on STAP applied to ground-based arrays. This thesis further focuses on the capability of STAP to resolve targets at low elevation angles in the presence of turbulence. Only clutter interference and receiver noise are considered.
