Design And Analysis Of Fully-Electronic Magnet-Free Non-Reciprocal Metamaterial, Swadesh Poddar Aug 2020

Design And Analysis Of Fully-Electronic Magnet-Free Non-Reciprocal Metamaterial, Swadesh Poddar

Theses and Dissertations

Reciprocity is a fundamental and very important characteristics of the vast majority of electronic devices, and requires that signals travel in both forward and reverse directions in the same manner. Similarly, electromagnetic non-reciprocity or one way wave propagation, implies that the field created by a source at an observation point is not the same when source and observation points are interchanged. Non-reciprocal devices such as isolators, circulators, phase shifters, polarizers,

switches, tunable resonators, tunable filters, and gyrators enable new applications from radio frequencies to optical frequencies. However, non-reciprocity has been implemented in the past using ferrites in the presence of …

A Narrow-Wall Complementary-Split-Ring Slotted Waveguide Antenna For High-Power-Microwave Applications, Xuyuan Pan Oct 2018

A Narrow-Wall Complementary-Split-Ring Slotted Waveguide Antenna For High-Power-Microwave Applications, Xuyuan Pan

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

A narrow-band, rugged, complementary-split-ring (CSR) slotted waveguide antenna (SWA) with significant size reduction is presented. The antenna is to be vertically front mounted on a land vehicle, with a horizontally polarized fan-beam radiation pattern. The radiation characteristics of a CSR slot in the narrow-wall of a rectangular waveguide are studied for the first time in this work. Both simulation and experimental results show that the complementary-split-ring slot radiates a linearly polarized wave with a total efficiency and gain close to those of conventional longitudinal slots, while the proposed CSR slots have a maximal outer diameter of 0.23λ0, much …

Split-Ring Resonator Waveguide Structure Characterization By Simulations, Measurements And Linear Time-Invariant Modeling, Mohamed Aziz Hmaidi May 2018

Split-Ring Resonator Waveguide Structure Characterization By Simulations, Measurements And Linear Time-Invariant Modeling, Mohamed Aziz Hmaidi

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Interest in Metamaterials has been rising drastically in the recent years as they have been used in several optical and RF applications, from antennas to perfect lenses and pulsed power devices. Nevertheless, the time-behavior of metamaterials remains opaque and poorly understood.

In this research work, characterization of a metamaterial structure in time and frequency-domain was made through simulations and experiments. The structure consists in a series of edge-side coupled Split Ring Resonators (SRRs) in a below cutoff waveguide. A linear time invariant model of distributed elements has been elaborated as well in an attempt to approach the structure’s behavior. The …

Design Of An All-Dielectric Sublayer For Enhanced Transmittance In Stacked Antenna Array Applications, Matthew Bester May 2018

Design Of An All-Dielectric Sublayer For Enhanced Transmittance In Stacked Antenna Array Applications, Matthew Bester

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

In spatially constrained applications, the overlapping of antenna arrays can be unavoidable and its presence can lead to a blockage in the line-of-sight for the underlying antennas. Although previous investigations focused predominantly on the contribution of the ground plane and feed network-which were resolved through the use of frequency selective surfaces and proper feed network design, respectively-it is believed that the ground plane, substrate, and patch regions can emplace a substantial combined impedance. To rectify the transmission through these layers, an all-dielectric implementation is suggested based on the properties of complementary media and Fabry-Perot resonance shifting phenomena. Consequently, both spherical …

Free-Space Measurements Of Dielectrics And Three-Dimensional Periodic Metamaterials, Clifford E. Kintner Dec 2017

Free-Space Measurements Of Dielectrics And Three-Dimensional Periodic Metamaterials, Clifford E. Kintner

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents the free-space measurements of a periodic metamaterial structure. The metamaterial unit cell consists of two dielectric sheets intersecting at 90 degrees. The dielectric is a polyetherimide-based material 0.001” thick. Each sheet has a copper capacitively-loaded loop (CLL) structure on the front and a cut-wire structure on the back. Foam material is used to support the unit cells. The unit cell repeats 40 times in the x-direction, 58 times in the y-direction and 5 times in the z-direction. The sample measures 12” × 12” × 1” in total. We use a free-space broadband system comprised of a pair …

Novel Methods For The Time-Dependent Maxwell’S Equations And Their Applications, Sidney Shields May 2017

Novel Methods For The Time-Dependent Maxwell’S Equations And Their Applications, Sidney Shields

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This dissertation investigates three different mathematical models based on the time domain Maxwell's equations using three different numerical methods: a Yee scheme using a non-uniform grid, a nodal discontinuous Galerkin (nDG) method, and a newly developed discontinuous Galerkin method named the weak Galerkin (WG) method. The non-uniform Yee scheme is first applied to an electromagnetic metamaterial model. Stability and superconvergence error results are proved for the method, which are then confirmed through numerical results. Additionally, a numerical simulation of backwards wave propagation through a negative-index metamaterial is given using the presented method. Next, the nDG method is used to simulate …

Virtual Antennas Using Metamaterials, Caglar D. Emiroglu Nov 2015

Virtual Antennas Using Metamaterials, Caglar D. Emiroglu

Doctoral Dissertations

Virtual antenna radiation at microwave frequencies using metamaterials is presented. Based on the transformation electromagnetics technique, the media embedding a physical antenna in a ground recess is designed such that the far-zone radiation pattern of a virtual antenna radiating above a flat conducting ground plane is reproduced. The antenna and a limited surrounding space above a ground plane is folded below the ground level, resulting in a physical antenna in a ground recess that is enclosed in transformation media. The electromagnetic specification of the media surrounding the physical antenna at the bottom of the recess is provided by a properly …

Wide Band Embedded Slot Antennas For Biomedical, Harsh Environment, And Rescue Applications, Yun Seo Koo May 2015

Wide Band Embedded Slot Antennas For Biomedical, Harsh Environment, And Rescue Applications, Yun Seo Koo

Doctoral Dissertations

For many designers, embedded antenna design is a very challenging task when designing embedded systems. Designing Antennas to given set of specifications is typically tailored to efficiently radiate the energy to free space with a certain radiation pattern and operating frequency range, but its design becomes even harder when embedded in multi-layer environment, being conformal to a surface, or matched to a wide range of loads (environments).

In an effort to clarify the design process, we took a closer look at the key considerations for designing an embedded antenna. The design could be geared towards wireless/mobile platforms, wearable antennas, or …

A Novel Transport Based Model For Wire Media And Its Application To Scattering Problems, Ebrahim Forati Dec 2014

A Novel Transport Based Model For Wire Media And Its Application To Scattering Problems, Ebrahim Forati

Theses and Dissertations

Artificially engineered materials, known as metamaterials, have attracted the interest of researchers because of the potential for novel applications. Effective modeling of metamaterials is a crucial step for analyzing and synthesizing devices. In this thesis, we focus on wire medium (both isotropic and uniaxial) and validate a novel transport based model for them.

Scattering problems involving wire media are computationally intensive due to the spatially dispersive nature of homogenized wire media. However, it will be shown that using the new model to solve scattering problems can simplify the calculations a great deal.

For scattering problems, an integro-differential equation based on …

Metamaterial Enhanced Wireless Power Transmission System, Travis Jade Heffernan Jul 2013

Metamaterial Enhanced Wireless Power Transmission System, Travis Jade Heffernan

Master's Theses

Nikolai Tesla's revolutionary experiments demonstrated the possible benefits of transmitting power wirelessly as early as 1891. Applications for the military, consumers, emergency personnel, remote sensors, and others use Tesla’s discovery of wireless power. Wireless power transmission (WPT) has the potential to be a common source of consumable energy, but it will only receive serious consideration if the transmit and receive systems are extremely efficient and capable of delivering usable amounts of power. Research has been conducted to improve the efficiency and performance of nearly every aspect of WPT systems, but the relatively new field of metamaterials (MTMs) has yet to …
