Exploring Methods For Studying Recoverability Of Shipboard Electrical Power Distribution Systems, Jacob David Gudex Dec 2019

Exploring Methods For Studying Recoverability Of Shipboard Electrical Power Distribution Systems, Jacob David Gudex

Theses and Dissertations

Advancement of the technology included on ships, is changing the nature of loads installed on ships. Not only are there more loads than installed power generation, but advanced electrically powered weapons and sensors are changing the profile of the installed loads. These are challenges for future shipboard power systems design. Challenges which must be solved with careful distribution system planning, energy storage integration, and selection of individual power electronic converters within the ship. Different topologies and distribution systems have differing fault isolation and recovery (FIR) capability sets, which affects ship survivability. Furthermore, different FIR capability sets, operate at different speeds. …

Analysis, Design And Implementation Of A Resonant Solid State Transformer, Mohamad Zouheir Sabbah May 2016

Analysis, Design And Implementation Of A Resonant Solid State Transformer, Mohamad Zouheir Sabbah

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis discusses the design of a full-bridge resonant LLC Solid State Transformer. The proposed topology uses a high-frequency transformer which helps minimizing its cost and size, and enables operating at varying load conditions. By using a resonant circuit, soft switching is achieved. Commutation techniques are discussed, namely ZVS and ZCS. Both concepts are applied on different legs of the H-bridge. Pulse frequency modulation (PFM) and Phase Shifting Modulation (PSM) are utilized to control this resonant converter. One of the requirements of this work is to achieve a tightly regulated DC bus voltage. This was shown to be achieved using …

Lithium-Ion Ultracapacitor Energy Storage Integrated With A Variable Speed Wind Turbine For Improved Power Conversion Control, Goran Mandic Dec 2012

Lithium-Ion Ultracapacitor Energy Storage Integrated With A Variable Speed Wind Turbine For Improved Power Conversion Control, Goran Mandic

Theses and Dissertations

The energy of wind has been increasingly used for electric power generation worldwide due to its availability and ecologically sustainability. Utilization of wind energy in modern power systems creates many technical and economical challenges that need to be addressed for successful large scale wind energy integration. Variations in wind velocity result in variations of output power produced by wind turbines. Variable power output becomes a challenge as the amount of output power of the wind turbines integrated into power systems increases. Large power variations cause voltage and frequency deviations from nominal values that may lead to activation of relay protective …
