Enhanced Security Utilizing Side Channel Data Analysis, Michael Taylor

Computer Science and Engineering Theses and Dissertations

The physical state of a system is affected by the activities and processes in which it is tasked with carrying out. In the past there have been many instances where such physical changes have been exploited by bad actors in order to gain insight into the operational state and even the data being held on a system. This method of side channel exploitation is very often effective due to the relative difficulty of obfuscating activity on a physical level. However, in order to take advantage of side channel data streams one must have a detailed working knowledge of how a …

Modeling And Control Of A 7-Level Switched Capacitor Rectifier For Wireless Power Transfer Systems, Spencer Cochran

Doctoral Dissertations

Wireless power continues to increase in popularity for consumer device charging. Rectifier characteristics like efficiency, compactness, impedance tunability, and harmonic content make the multi-level switched capacitor rectifier (MSC) an exceptional candidate for modern WPT systems. The MSC shares the voltage conversion characteristics of a post-rectification buck-boost topology, reduces waveform distortion via its multi-level modulation scheme, demonstrates tank tunability via the phase control inherent to actively switched rectifiers, and accomplishes all this without a bulky filter inductor. In this work, the MSC WPT system operation is explained, and a loss model is constructed. A prototype system is used to validate the …

Partial Discharge Testing And Detection Under Pwm Voltage, John Meadors Dec 2021

Partial Discharge Testing And Detection Under Pwm Voltage, John Meadors

Masters Theses

Partial Discharge detection and measurement is an important part of electric insulation design. However, in PWM (pulse width modulation) voltage source converter environments, the noise resulting from switching voltage (rise and fall times of tens of nanoseconds) makes detection and extraction of partial discharge difficult. Unique methods of partial discharge detection are needed to address and decouple the noise from partial discharge measurements. PWM voltage can feature high switching speeds and high dv/dt during voltage switching. These PWM voltage behaviors are not found in traditional utility high voltage applications, and the effects that this type of voltage has on insulation …

Novel Zcs Pwm Methods For Industrial Applications, Ramtin Rasoulinezhad Aug 2021

Novel Zcs Pwm Methods For Industrial Applications, Ramtin Rasoulinezhad

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Pulse width modulation (PWM) converters that consist of two or more interleaved boost/buck converter modules are used widely in industry. Soft-switching approaches for these converters can either be zero-voltage switching (ZVS) if implemented with MOSFETs or zero-current switching (ZCS) if implemented with IGBTs. The main idea of this thesis is to implement ZCS for IGBT turn-on and turn-off. Most converters use an auxiliary circuit that is activated whenever a main converter switch is about to be turned off, gradually diverting current away from the switch so that it can turn off with ZCS.

ZCS-PWM converters that use an auxiliary circuit …

Electrical Engineering

In this work, we implemented the idea of current foldback protection onto a buck converter. Current foldback protection essentially helps reduce the power dissipation which may be caused by a short circuit or overload scenario. To achieve the goal of this project, we used a combination of comparators, operational amplifiers and MOSFETs to create a current foldback sub controller. This controller would then serve as a feedback device between the output of the converter and the main controller to detect if a fault condition has occurred. Following the design, we performed simulation of the current foldback controller using PSpice and …

Impact Of Wind Generation On Transmission Voltage Support During Weak Grid, Yugo Isogai May 2021

Impact Of Wind Generation On Transmission Voltage Support During Weak Grid, Yugo Isogai

Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Today, there are concerns about the effects of high wind penetration on electric power system operations. This is due to the more distributed nature of wind turbine generation and the corresponding multi-path power flows on the electric power transmission grid. In particular, the higher line impendences associated with inverter-based wind generation results in larger voltage fluctuation under varying load. This may results in conditions where even after a fault condition has been cleared, the transmission system voltages may not recover. Therefore, this paper concentrates on the impact of weak grid condition for voltage instability. To approach it, a 6-bus system …

Memory Module Design For High-Temperature Applications In Sic Cmos Technology, Affan Abbasi

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The wide bandgap (WBG) characteristics of SiC play a significant and disruptive role in the power electronics industry. The same characteristics make this material a viable choice for high-temperature electronics systems. Leveraging the high-temperature capability of SiC is crucial to automotive, space exploration, aerospace, deep well drilling, and gas turbines. A significant issue with the high-temperature operation is the exponential increase in leakage current. The lower intrinsic carrier concentration of SiC (10-9 cm-3) compared to Si (1010 cm-3) leads to lower leakage over temperature. Several researchers have demonstrated analog and digital circuits designed in SiC. However, a memory module is …
