Thermal And Electrical Parasitic Modeling For Multi-Chip Power Module Layout Synthesis, Zihao Gong

This thesis presents thermal and electrical parasitic modeling approaches for layout synthesis of Multi-Chip Power Modules (MCPMs). MCPMs integrate power semiconductor devices and drive electronics into a single package. As the switching frequency of power devices increases, the size of the passive components are greatly reduced leading to gains in efficiency and cost reduction. In order to increase switching frequency, electrical parasitics in MCPMs need to be reduced through tighter electronic integrations and smaller packages. As package size is decreased, temperature increases due to less heat dissipation capability. Thus, it is crucial to consider both thermal and electrical parasitics in …

Development of kinetic energy scavenging applications from the human body necessitates additional research to assist in designating a mounting position for a potential device. A data acquisition system adequately provides a parametric average power comparison among four locations on the body (waist, upper arm, hand, and calf) for both a male and female subject. Experimentally, the hand-held device provided the highest average power. Thus, subsequent investigation at set speeds provides further analysis of the output’s characteristically linear behavior. In this project, the research, design and simulation of an interconnected H-bridge single-phase inverter was explored. The inverter design was divided into three separate sections. First, a VHDL programmed CPLD was used to generate control signals for the transistors of the inverter circuit. Second, power electronics was used to create an inverter circuit to change a DC input to a 60 Hz AC output. Lastly, additional circuits were used to link the generated control signals to the MOSFET transistors of the inverter circuit. The goal of this project is to create a multiple output cell phone charger for the DC House project. The cell phone charger is essentially a DC-DC converter. The converter takes an input of 48 volts from the outlet in the DC House and decreases the voltage level to 5 volts; the input voltage level of all cellular devices. By designing an isolated flyback converter with initial specification in LTSpice simulation software, a converter was created. The purpose of this project is to build a DC-DC converter for the wall outlet of the DC House. This report focuses on the development of the DC -DC converter, and explains the design process as well as summarize the final results. The proposed system using the Buck or Step Down topology takes input voltage of 48V and output 12V at 100W. Results show the ability of the converter to fulfill such tasks while maintaining efficiency about 90% at all load.

This work approximates the selective harmonic elimination problem using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to generate the switching angles in an 11-level full bridge cascade inverter powered by five varying DC input sources. Each of the five full bridges of the cascade inverter was connected to a separate 195W solar panel. The angles were chosen such that the fundamental was kept constant and the low order harmonics were minimized or eliminated. A system to improve efficiency performance of a DC-DC converter is simulated and built. The proposed system combines multiple DC-DC converters in parallel and implements a digital control scheme and load-share controller. A model of the system is developed in MATLAB Simulink and the model demonstrates the improved converter’s efficiency particularly at low load conditions. This simulation is then designed into a hardware system running three DC-DC converters in parallel, controlled by a microcontroller and a load-share controller. The relationship between response time and safety margin of CANadian Deuterium Uranium (CANDU) nuclear power plant (NPP) is investigated in this thesis. Implementation of safety shutdown system using Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is explored. The fast data processing capability of FPGAs shortens the response time of CANDU shutdown systems (SDS) such that the impact of accident transient can be reduced. The safety margin, which is closely related to the reactor behavior in the event of an accident, is improved as a result of such a faster shutdown process.

Field Oriented Control (FOC), also known as vector control, is a widely used and well documented method for controlling Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) and induction motors.
