Novel Non-Invasive Technology For The Detection Of Thin Biofilm In Piping Systems (Phase - 1), Sachin Davis May 2019

Novel Non-Invasive Technology For The Detection Of Thin Biofilm In Piping Systems (Phase - 1), Sachin Davis

Theses and Dissertations

Biofilms are formed when a group of cells of microorganisms stick to each other and often on a surface. The development of biofilm has been a major issue in many fields (medical field, food, chemical, and water industry are a few such fields). In the medical field alone, biofilm infections have reportedly cost over five billion USD in additional healthcare expenses. The food industry usually halts the operation of its plant eight hours, every day to ensure that their equipment and transportation channels are clean and free from any biofilm presence. Similarly, the water and chemical industry need to ensure …

Design And Implementation Of A Multi-Port Solid State Transformer For Flexible Der Integration, Mohammad Rashidi Dec 2017

Design And Implementation Of A Multi-Port Solid State Transformer For Flexible Der Integration, Mohammad Rashidi

Theses and Dissertations

Conventional power system includes four major sections, bulk generation, transmission network, distribution network, and loads. The main converter in the conventional electric grid is the low-frequency passive transformer providing galvanic isolation and voltage regulation for various voltage zones. In this configuration, small-scale renewable energy resources are generally connected to the power system at low voltage zones or inside microgrids.

Recent developments in the design of power electronic elements with higher voltage and power ratings and medium/high frequency enable making use of solid state transformer at different voltage levels in the distribution system and microgrid design. In this work, the concept …

Transient Control Of Synchronous Machine Active And Reactive Power In Micro-Grid Power Systems, Luke Gerard Weber Aug 2016

Transient Control Of Synchronous Machine Active And Reactive Power In Micro-Grid Power Systems, Luke Gerard Weber

Theses and Dissertations

There are two main topics associated with this dissertation. The first is to investigate

phase–to–neutral fault current magnitude occurring in generators with multiple zero–sequence

current sources. The second is to design, model, and tune a linear control system for oper-

ating a micro–grid in the event of a separation from the electric power system.

In the former case, detailed generator, AC8B excitation system, and four–wire electric

power system models are constructed. Where available, manufacturers data is used to

validate the generator and exciter models. A gain–delay with frequency droop control

is used to model an internal combustion engine and governor. …

A New Paradigm Of Maximizing The Wind And Solar Penetration– A Economical Assessment, Yuming Chen May 2016

A New Paradigm Of Maximizing The Wind And Solar Penetration– A Economical Assessment, Yuming Chen

Theses and Dissertations

Wind and solar energies are the most potential and widely-used renewable energies. But in most cases these energies cannot be maximized because of transmission line capacity and their remote location. Therefore, this thesis proposes a new paradigm which using battery transportation and logistics instead of transmission line, to maximize wind and solar energies. The main focus of this work is to investigate the economical feasibilities of this new paradigm.

In the first part, different models and application are presented. The purpose is finding an appropriate model which can make full use of existing grid resources such as transmission line and …

The Effects Of Geomagnetic Disturbances On Electrical Power Systems, Benjamin J. Hynes May 2016

The Effects Of Geomagnetic Disturbances On Electrical Power Systems, Benjamin J. Hynes

Theses and Dissertations

Solar storms that generate coronal mass ejections are a cause for concern due to the damage that they cause in high voltage power grids. Geomagnetically induced currents can be introduced onto the grid and cause many adverse effects. The vulnerability of the bulk electric power systems to such events has increased during the past few decades because the power system transmission lines have become more interconnected and have increased in length. Real and reactive power flows, voltage fluctuations, frequency shifts, undesired relay operations, higher order harmonic currents, undesired damage to assets and failure of assets are all possible outcomes from …

Design And Optimization Of Hybrid Energy Storage For Photovoltaic Power Fluctuation Smoothing Based On Frequency Analysis, Ruirui Yang May 2016

Design And Optimization Of Hybrid Energy Storage For Photovoltaic Power Fluctuation Smoothing Based On Frequency Analysis, Ruirui Yang

Theses and Dissertations

A proper design of energy storage system (ESS) can effectively smooth the photovoltaic (PV) output power fluctuation, lower the cost, and improve the power quality and stability.

According to the response characteristics of different energy storage equipment, an optimal hybrid EES sizing method is proposed based on frequency analysis. A hybrid ESS including lead-acid battery, lithium battery and electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC) is selected to smooth out PV power fluctuation and meet both power and energy requirement of the power grid. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) method is applied for analyzing the spectrum of unwanted PV fluctuation. From the FFT analysis, …

Water Withdrawal And Consumption Reduction Analysis For Electrical Energy Generation System, Narjes Nouri Dec 2015

Water Withdrawal And Consumption Reduction Analysis For Electrical Energy Generation System, Narjes Nouri

Theses and Dissertations

There is an increasing concern over shrinking water resources. Water use in the energy sector primarily occurs in electricity generation. Anticipating scarcer supplies, the value of water is undoubtedly on the rise and design, implementation, and utilization of water saving mechanisms in energy generation systems are becoming inevitable. Most power plants generate power by boiling water to produce steam to spin electricity-generating turbines. Large quantities of water are often used to cool the steam in these plants. As a consequence, most fossil-based power plants in addition to consuming water, impact the water resources by raising the temperature of water withdrawn …

Virtual Droop Control Framework And Stability Analyses For Microgrids With High Penetration Of Renewables, Ashishkumar Kanubhai Solanki May 2015

Virtual Droop Control Framework And Stability Analyses For Microgrids With High Penetration Of Renewables, Ashishkumar Kanubhai Solanki

Theses and Dissertations

Microgrids can provide the most promising means of integrating large amounts of distributed sources into the power grid and can supply reliable power to critical loads. However, managing distributed sources and loads within a microgrid during island and grid-tie modes and during transitions is a challenge. Stable operation of a microgrid is a concern specifically during the starting of motor loads, switching of large loads, and in presence of high penetration of renewable resources. Hence, a generalized control framework is required to regulate microgrid voltage and frequency, maintain power quality, manage Distributed Generations (DG) and ensure microgrid stability. Several control …

Dc Microgrid Modeling And Energy Storage Placement To Enhance System Stability, Carl Westerby May 2013

Dc Microgrid Modeling And Energy Storage Placement To Enhance System Stability, Carl Westerby

Theses and Dissertations

The work of this thesis represents a joint venture between the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. A DC microgrid is selected for the efficiency benefits, lack of reactive power in the system, and ease of connecting to an AC grid. The system modeling relies on physical parameters and industry standard methods for the estimation of loads and lines. An example model is created for the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee's Campus. Due to the high penetration of renewable energy sources in the example model, system stability is a concern. To help mitigate stability issues, analysis is performed …
