Low-Power, Event-Driven System On A Chip For Charge Pulse Processing Applications, Joseph A. Schmitz
Low-Power, Event-Driven System On A Chip For Charge Pulse Processing Applications, Joseph A. Schmitz
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This dissertation presents an electronic architecture and methodology capable of processing charge pulses generated by a range of sensors, including radiation detectors and tactile synthetic skin. These sensors output a charge signal proportional to the input stimulus, which is processed electronically in both the analog and digital domains. The presented work implements this functionality using an event-driven methodology, which greatly reduces power consumption compared to standard implementations. This enables new application areas that require a long operating time or compact physical dimensions, which would not otherwise be possible. The architecture is designed, fabricated, and tested in the aforementioned applications to …
Low Power Multi-Channel Interface For Charge Based Tactile Sensors, Samuel Hansen
Low Power Multi-Channel Interface For Charge Based Tactile Sensors, Samuel Hansen
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Analog front end electronics are designed in 65 nm CMOS technology to process charge pulses arriving from a tactile sensor array. This is accomplished through the use of charge sensitive amplifiers and discrete time filters with tunable clock signals located in each of the analog front ends. Sensors were emulated using Gaussian pulses during simulation. The digital side of the system uses SAR (successive approximation register) ADCs for sampling of the processed sensor signals.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Working with sensors has become an area of expertise within the domain of electronic engineering. On a day to day basis, thousands of sensors are put to use around us, for instance, in smoke alarms, speedometers, motors, computers, radiators etc. to accumulate sensor data, cables that connect the sensors to the bottom station after which the information is worked on. But cabling is often expensive especially when handling large scale industrial applications [5]. For an equivalent reason, low-cost wireless networks came into the picture recently and are in high demand. A research paper we found during our review of …

Bibliometric Analysis On Dynamic Target Tracking By Mobile Robot, Gaurav Atha Mr., Siddhant Chaturvedi Mr., Atishraj Desai Mr., Dhrumil Desai Mr., Shripad V. Deshpande Mr.
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The survey and bibliometric research on dynamic target tracking by a mobile robot are discussed in this paper. The primary goal of this bibliometric analysis is to comprehend and analyze the scope of the literature in the field of mobile robots for obstacle avoidance, path planning and target tracking using Robot Operating System (ROS). The ROS contains various tools for data analysis, incorporates multiple robots and their sensors, and supports devices interaction for target seeking and localization in mobile robots. This detailed review was performed on various research publications about the mapping of the unknown field/environment by the ROS based …
Cmos Radioactive Isotope Identification With Multichannel Analyzer And Embedded Neural Network, Samuel Murray
Cmos Radioactive Isotope Identification With Multichannel Analyzer And Embedded Neural Network, Samuel Murray
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
A radiation detection and identification system is designed and implemented to perform gamma ray spectroscopy on radioactive sources and identify which isotopes are present in the sources. A multichannel analyzer is implemented on an ASIC to process the signal produced from gamma rays detected by a scintillator and photomultiplier tube and to quantize the gamma ray energies to build a histogram. A fast, low memory embedded neural network is implemented on a microcontroller ASIC to identify the isotopes present in the gamma ray histogram produced by the multichannel analyzer in real time.

Event And Time-Triggered Control Module Layers For Individual Robot Control Architectures Of Unmanned Agricultural Ground Vehicles, Tyler Troyer
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Automation in the agriculture sector has increased to an extent where the accompanying methods for unmanned field management are becoming more economically viable. This manifests in the industry’s recent presentation of conceptual cab-less machines that perform all field operations under the high-level task control of a single remote operator. A dramatic change in the overall workflow for field tasks that historically assumed the presence of a human in the immediate vicinity of the work is predicted. This shift in the entire approach to farm machinery work provides producers increased control and productivity over high-level tasks and less distraction from operating …
Security Analysis Of Phasor Measurement Units In Smart Grid Communication Infrastructures
Security Analysis Of Phasor Measurement Units In Smart Grid Communication Infrastructures
Computer and Electronics Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs), or synchrophasors, are rapidly being deployed in the smart grid with the goal of measuring phasor quantities concurrently from wide area distribution substations. By utilizing GPS receivers, PMUs can take a wide area snapshot of power systems. Thus, the possibility of blackouts in the smart grid, the next generation power grid, will be reduced. As the main enabler of Wide Area Measurement Systems (WAMS), PMUs transmit measured values to Phasor Data Concentrators (PDCs) by the synchrophasor standard IEEE C37.118. IEC 61850 and IEC 62351 are the communication protocols for the substation automation system and the security …
Energy Efficiency Analysis And Optimization On Mobile Video Wireless Delivery, Jianxin Sun
Energy Efficiency Analysis And Optimization On Mobile Video Wireless Delivery, Jianxin Sun
Computer and Electronics Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Micro-electronic industry has been boosting the capability of wireless mobile devices on full-scale. However, battery, as the only power source of most mobile devices, is experiencing a relatively slow development. Therefore, how to optimally utilize the limited battery energy on mobile devices under a predefined performance requirement becomes a critical issue. On the other hand, it is still unclear that how the battery capacity consumption is allocated on different working pattern of a specific video codec under various tempo-spatial scales and parameters, which has posed a design challenge on power management on multimedia communication system. Furthermore, an optimization method is …
Wireless Embedded Smart Cameras: Performance Analysis And Their Application To Fall Detection For Eldercare., Alvaro Pinto
Wireless Embedded Smart Cameras: Performance Analysis And Their Application To Fall Detection For Eldercare., Alvaro Pinto
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Wireless Embedded Smart Camera Networks has received a lot of attention from academia and industry because they are small in size and easy to deploy, and they offer a multitude of attractive applications. They can be used for embedded single unit applications, or can be networked for multi-camera applications.
We first analyze three different operation scenarios for a wireless vision sensor network wherein different levels of local processing is performed. A detailed quantitative comparison of three operation scenarios are presented in terms of energy consumption and latency. This quantitative analysis provides the motivation for performing high-level local processing and decision …
Robust Image And Video Coding With Adaptive Rate Control, Hongqiang Wang
Robust Image And Video Coding With Adaptive Rate Control, Hongqiang Wang
Computer and Electronics Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This dissertation is focused on the problem of rate allocation in a resource constrained environment and robustness of video coding over noise channels. A new rate allocation scheme that combines the traditional PCRD-Opt algorithm with the rho domain analysis is proposed for wavelet based image coders. The proposed scheme provides competitive performance as compared with the optimal PCRD-Opt algorithm, while with great reduction on complexity and computational costs. Rate allocation is developed for the Region-Of-Interest (ROI) in the wavelet transform domain for image coding. A recursive region growing method that deter mines the ROI in the transform domain is proposed. …
