Self-Tuning Of Pid Controller For Dc Motor Using Mrac, R.S Naga Kumar Ganugula
Self-Tuning Of Pid Controller For Dc Motor Using Mrac, R.S Naga Kumar Ganugula
R.S Naga Kumar Ganugula
The main objective of this paper is to control the speed
of a separately excited DC motor using a self tuning PID
controller based on Model Reference Adaptive control (MRAC)
approach. This auto tuning controller aims to Tune the
parameters of the PID controller in response to changes in plant
and disturbance real time by referring to the reference model
that specifies the properties of the desired control system.
The simulation results show the effectiveness of the self
tuning controller both in transient and steady state responses
when compared to the fixed parameter PID controller.

Simulation Of Ihrrfpid Controller For Dc-Dc Converter, R.S Naga Kumar Ganugula
R.S Naga Kumar Ganugula
In this paper, an Intelligent Hybrid Reduced Rule Base Fuzzy PID controller (IHRRFPID) is developed for the DC-DC converter. This Hybrid controller is a combination of both PID and Fuzzy logic controller in an intelligent way that depends on a function of actuating error such as ITAE (Integral Time Absolute Error). Moreover, an intelligent switching scheme is induced on the blending mechanism that makes a decision up on the priority of the two controllers, namely the classical PID and the fuzzy constituents. The simulation results shows that the hybrid fuzzy PID controller provides better response in terms of transient and …
Control Design And Filtering For Wireless Networked Systems, Xiao Ma
Control Design And Filtering For Wireless Networked Systems, Xiao Ma
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation is concerned with estimation and control over wireless networked systems. Several problems are addressed, including estimator design over packet loss links, control and estimation over cognitive radio systems, modeling and prediction of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), and localization with the Theater Positioning System (TPS). The first problem addressed is the state estimation of a discrete-time system through a packet loss link modeled by a Bernoulli random variable. The optimal filter is derived by employing exact hybrid filtering. The performance of the optimal filter is illustrated by numerical simulations. Next, we consider the problem of estimation and control over …

Capacitor Voltage Control Techniques Of The Z-Source Inverter: A Comparative Study, Omar Ellabban, Joeri Van Mierlo, Philippe Lataire
Omar Ellabban
The Z-source inverter (ZSI) is a recently proposed single-stage power conversion topology. It adds voltage boost capability for complementing the usual voltage buck operation of a traditional voltage source inverter (VSI) with improved reliability. In this paper, a single-loop and dual-loop capacitor voltage control techniques for the ZSI are digitally designed based on a third order small signal model of the ZSI, implemented using a digital signal processor (DSP) and compared. Simulation and experimental results of a 30 kW ZSI during input voltage changes, load disturbances and steady state operations are presented and compared. The results show that the dual-loop …

Smart Wall Plug Design For The Dc House Project, Edward Constant Sibal
Master's Theses
The DC House project at Cal Poly State University faces a challenge of supplying DC voltage to household appliances. Each appliance in the DC House constitutes a DC load that has a unique voltage and power rating, hence the need to develop a smart DC wall plug that will automatically adjust to the operating voltage required by any DC load. This thesis entails a proof of concept design of the smart DC wall plug which can automatically detect an appliance’s voltage rating. The design employs a dc-dc converter in conjunction with a microcontroller to sense load current to properly adjust …
Exploration Of Neural Structures For Dynamic System Control, Scott Frederick Hansen
Exploration Of Neural Structures For Dynamic System Control, Scott Frederick Hansen
Masters Theses
Biological neural systems are powerful mechanisms for controlling biological sys- tems. While the complexity of biological neural networks makes exact simulation intractable, several key aspects lend themselves to implementation on computational systems.
This thesis constructs a discrete event neural network simulation that implements aspects of biological neural networks. A combined genetic programming/simulated annealing approach is utilized to design network structures that function as regulators for continuous time dynamic systems in the presence of process noise when simulated using a discrete event neural simulation.
Methods of constructing such networks are analyzed including examination of the final network structure and the algorithm …
Adaptive Local And Global Synchronization And Phase Control Of Inferior Olive Neurons (Ions), Srujan Kumar Chalike
Adaptive Local And Global Synchronization And Phase Control Of Inferior Olive Neurons (Ions), Srujan Kumar Chalike
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Clusters of inferior olive neurons (IONs) in the olive-cerebellar system play an important role in providing synchronized motor control signals for the activation of large number of muscles. However, the dynamics of IONs are highly nonlinear and the system parameters are assumed to be unknowm. The IONs evolving from arbitrary initial conditions are not synchronized. However the application of IONs for control of BAUV's requires that IONs oscillate in unison. The objective is to design control laws such that the controlled ION tracks the trajectories of the reference ION. The two control laws are derived based on tuning functions adaptive …
Development Of A Novel Handheld Device For Active Compensation Of Physiological Tremor, Abhijit Saxena
Development Of A Novel Handheld Device For Active Compensation Of Physiological Tremor, Abhijit Saxena
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
In microsurgery, the human hand imposes certain limitations in accurately positioning the tip of a device such as scalpel. Any errors in the motion of the hand make microsurgical procedures difficult and involuntary motions such as hand tremors can make some procedures significantly difficult to perform. This is particularly true in the case of vitreoretinal microsurgery. The most familiar source of involuntary motion is physiological tremor. Real-time compensation of tremor is, therefore, necessary to assist surgeons to precisely position and manipulate the tool-tip to accurately perform a microsurgery. In this thesis, a novel handheld device (AID) is described for compensation …

Green Scheduling For Radiant Systems In Buildings, Truong X. Nghiem, Madhur Behl, George J. Pappas, Rahul Mangharam
Madhur Behl
In this report we look at the problem of peak power reduction for buildings with electric radiant floor heating systems. Uncoordinated operation of a multi-zone radiant floor heating system can result in temporally correlated electricity demand surges or peaks in the building’s electricity consumption. As peak power prices are 200-400 times that of the nominal rate, this uncoordinated activity can result in high electricity costs and expensive system operation. We have previously presented green scheduling as an approach for reducing the aggregate peak power consumption in buildings while ensuring that indoor thermal comfort is always maintained. This report extends the …
Network Synthesis For Dynamical System Stabilization, Miroslav Pajic, Shreyas Sundaram, George Pappas, Rahul Mangharam
Network Synthesis For Dynamical System Stabilization, Miroslav Pajic, Shreyas Sundaram, George Pappas, Rahul Mangharam
Rahul Mangharam
We present our recent results in the area of distributed control over wireless networks. In our previous work, we introduced the concept of a Wireless Control Network (WCN), where the network acts as a decentralized structured controller. In this case, the network is not used only as a communication medium (as in traditional control paradigms), but instead as a fully distributed computational substrate. We show that the dynamics of the plant dictate the types of network topologies that can be used to stabilize the system. Finally, we describe how to obtain a stabilizing configuration for the WCN if the topological …

A Simple Distributed Method For Control Over Wireless Networks, Miroslav Pajic, Shreyas Sundaram, George Pappas, Rahul Mangharam
Rahul Mangharam
We present a distributed scheme used for control over wireless networks. In our previous work, we introduced the concept of a Wireless Control Network (WCN), where the network itself, with no centralized node, acts as the controller. In this work, we show how the WCN can be modified to include observer style updates which substantially improves robustness of the closed-loop system to link failures. In addition, we analyze how the WCN simplifies extraction of the communication and computation schedules and enables system compositionality and scalability.

We consider the problem of stabilizing a plant with a network of resource constrained wireless nodes. Traditional networked control schemes are designed with one of the nodes in the network acting as a dedicated controller, while the other nodes simply route information to and from the controller and the plant. We introduce the concept of a Wireless Control Network (WCN) where the entire network itself acts as the controller. Specifically, at each time-step, each node updates its internal state to be a linear combination of the states of the nodes in its neighborhood. We show that this causes the entire …

Autoplug: An Architecture For Remote Electronic Controller Unit Diagnostics In Automotive Systems, Yash Vardhan Pant, Miroslav Pajic, Rahul Mangharam
Rahul Mangharam
In 2010, over 20.3 million vehicles were recalled. Software issues related to automotive controls such as cruise control, anti-lock braking system, traction control and stability control, account for an increasingly large percentage of the overall vehicles recalled. There is a need for new and scalable methods to evaluate automotive controls in a realistic and open setting. We have developed AutoPlug, an automotive Electronic Controller Unit (ECU) architecture between the vehicle and a Remote Diagnostics Center to diagnose, test, update and verify controls software. Within the vehicle, we evaluate observerbased runtime diagnostic schemes and introduce a framework for remote management of …

The Wireless Control Network: A New Approach For Control Over Networks, Miroslav Pajic, Shreyas Sundaram, George Pappas, Rahul Mangharam
Rahul Mangharam
We present a method to stabilize a plant with a network of resource constrained wireless nodes. As opposed to traditional networked control schemes where the nodes simply route information to and from a dedicated controller (perhaps performing some encoding along the way), our approach treats the network itself as the controller. Specifically, we formulate a strategy for each node in the network to follow, where at each time-step, each node updates its internal state to be a linear combination of the states of the nodes in its neighborhood. We show that this causes the entire network to behave as a …

Closing The Loop: A Simple Distributed Method For Control Over Wireless Networks, Miroslav Pajic, Shreyas Sundaram, Jerome Le Ny, George J. Pappas, Rahul Mangharam
Rahul Mangharam
We present a distributed scheme used for control over a network of wireless nodes. As opposed to traditional networked control schemes where the nodes simply route information to and from a dedicated controller (perhaps performing some encoding along the way), our approach, Wireless Control Network (WCN), treats the network itself as the controller. In other words, the computation of the control law is done in a fully distributed way inside the network. We extend the basic WCN strategy, where at each time-step, each node updates its internal state to be a linear combination of the states of the nodes in …
Embedded Virtual Machines For Robust Wireless Control And Actuation, Miroslav Pajic, Rahul Mangharam
Embedded Virtual Machines For Robust Wireless Control And Actuation, Miroslav Pajic, Rahul Mangharam
Rahul Mangharam
Embedded wireless networks have largely focused on open-loop sensing and monitoring. To address actuation in closed-loop wireless control systems there is a strong need to re-think the communication architectures and protocols for reliability, coordination and control. As the links, nodes and topology of wireless systems are inherently unreliable, such time-critical and safety-critical applications require programming abstractions and runtime systems where the tasks are assigned to the sensors, actuators and controllers as a single component rather than statically mapping a set of tasks to a specific physical node at design time. To this end, we introduce the Embedded Virtual Machine (EVM), …

Topological Conditions For Wireless Control Networks, Miroslav Pajic, Shreyas Sundaram, George J. Pappas, Rahul Mangharam
Rahul Mangharam
We study the problem of stabilizing a linear system over a wireless control network. We propose a scheme where each wireless node maintains a scalar state, and periodically updates it as a linear combination of neighboring plant outputs and node states. We make connections to decentralized fixed modes and structured system theory to provide conditions on the network topology that allow the system to be stabilized. Our analysis provides the minimal number of feedback edges that have to be introduced to stabilize the system over a network, and shows that as long as the network connectivity is larger than the …
Preoperative Planning Of Robotics-Assisted Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery Under Uncertainty, Hamidreza Azimian
Preoperative Planning Of Robotics-Assisted Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery Under Uncertainty, Hamidreza Azimian
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
In this thesis, a computational framework for patient-specific preoperative planning of Robotics-Assisted Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (RAMICS) is developed. It is expected that preoperative planning of RAMICS will improve the rate of success by considering robot kinematics, patient-specific thoracic anatomy, and procedure-specific intraoperative conditions. Given the significant anatomical features localized in the preoperative computed tomography images of a patient's thorax, port locations and robot orientations (with respect to the patient's body coordinate frame) are determined to optimize characteristics such as dexterity, reachability, tool approach angles and maneuverability. In this thesis, two approaches for preoperative planning of RAMICS are proposed that …
Technique For Measurement Of Weld Resistance For Ac Resistance Spot Welding Via Instantaneous Phasor Measurement, Mian Mohsin Irshad
Technique For Measurement Of Weld Resistance For Ac Resistance Spot Welding Via Instantaneous Phasor Measurement, Mian Mohsin Irshad
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The resistance measurement in the resistance spot welding (RSW), is an ongoing research topic. The high current flow during the welding process induces an electromagnetic field in the wires which are attached to the electrodes to measure tip voltage. This results an additional voltage drop which is proportional to the derivative of current. Also the presence of silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) in the welding power supply generates harmonics in both supply voltage and current. These issues together complicate the methods for resistance estimation.
A set of simultaneous linear equations is derived for the on-line measurement of dynamic resistance and induced …
Transient Stability Hierarchical Control In Multimachine Power Systems, A Rubbai, F. Eugenio Villaseca
Transient Stability Hierarchical Control In Multimachine Power Systems, A Rubbai, F. Eugenio Villaseca
F. Eugenio Villaseca
The authors present the optimal transient stability control problem in a hierarchical structure for multimachine power systems. The two-level structure retains the local closed-loop controls, thereby easing its implementation on existing systems. The formulation accounts for nonlinearities and interconnections, and the optimization of the system transient performance is obtained with less computational effort. Since the computations are distributed among the many local feedback subsystems, the storage and solution times are considerably less than those required by a single overall centralized controller. This advantage becomes much stronger as the system size increases. For illustration purposes, this technique was applied successfully to …

Back To The Future Of Green Powered Economies, Juan B. Moreno-Cruz, M. Scott Taylor
Juan B. Moreno-Cruz
The purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of power density [Watts/m2] into economics. By introducing an explicit spatial structure into a simple general equilibrium model we are able to show how the power density of available energy resources determines the extent of energy exploitation, the density of urban agglomerations, and the peak level of income per capita. Using a simple Malthusian model to sort population across geographic space we demonstrate how the density of available energy supplies creates density in energy demands by agglomerating economic activity. We label this result the density-creates-density hypothesis and evaluate it using …

Experimental Evaluation Of The Projection-Based Force Reflection Algorithms For Haptic Interaction With Virtual Environment, Mir Z. Hasan
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Haptic interaction with virtual environments is currently a major and growing area of research with a number of emerging applications, particularly in the field of robotics. Digital implementation of the virtual environments, however, introduces errors which may result in instability of the haptic displays. This thesis deals with experimental investigation of the Projection-Based Force Reflection Algorithms (PFRAs) for haptic interaction with virtual environments, focusing on their performance in terms of stability and transparency. Experiments were performed to compare the PFRA in terms of performance for both non-delayed and delayed haptic interactions with more conventional haptic rendering methods, such as the …

Independent Moisture-Sensitive Automatic Watering System, Jessica Sherbon
Independent Moisture-Sensitive Automatic Watering System, Jessica Sherbon
Electrical Engineering
With the availability of home improvement supplies, plant owners can quickly and easily set up an automatic system that waters their gardens based on a specified schedule. However, most of these systems require an electric outlet or water faucet making them unusable in locations where installed water and power lines do not exist, such as apartment balconies. This project defines a small-scale automated watering system that runs independently of installed water and power lines. The system takes water from a reservoir, such as a tank or bucket, and supplies that water to individual plants via a drip system. The design …

Master's Theses
The focus of this thesis is to research, analyze, and design a reliable and economical control system for the Cal Poly Wind Energy Capture System (WECS). A dynamic permanent magnet generator model is adopted from [1] and [2] and combined with an existing wind turbine model to create a non-linear time varying model in MATLAB. The model is then used to analyze potentially harmful electrical disturbances, and to define safe operating limits for the WECS. An optimal operating point controller utilizing a PID speed loop is designed with combined optimization criteria and the final controller design …

This research project was set up to monitor, on an ongoing basis, the condition of the end windings and their support structures of a 288 MVA 2-pole synchronous generator with a known end winding vibration problem Excessive vibration at the end windings was caused by the natural frequencies of individual end bars (local) and of the entire end winding structure (global) being at or close to the magnetic forcing frequency of 100 Hz. Resonant vibration such as this has been a cause of major failures in machines of the same type in the past, resulting in significant down time ranging …
