The main objective of this paper is to control the speed

of a separately excited DC motor using a self tuning PID

controller based on Model Reference Adaptive control (MRAC)

approach. This auto tuning controller aims to Tune the

parameters of the PID controller in response to changes in plant

and disturbance real time by referring to the reference model

that specifies the properties of the desired control system.

The simulation results show the effectiveness of the self

tuning controller both in transient and steady state responses

when compared to the fixed parameter PID controller.

In this paper, an Intelligent Hybrid Reduced Rule Base Fuzzy PID controller (IHRRFPID) is developed for the DC-DC converter. This Hybrid controller is a combination of both PID and Fuzzy logic controller in an intelligent way that depends on a function of actuating error such as ITAE (Integral Time Absolute Error). This dissertation is concerned with estimation and control over wireless networked systems. Several problems are addressed, including estimator design over packet loss links, control and estimation over cognitive radio systems, modeling and prediction of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), and localization with the Theater Positioning System (TPS). The first problem addressed is the state estimation of a discrete-time system through a packet loss link modeled by a Bernoulli random variable. The Z-source inverter (ZSI) is a recently proposed single-stage power conversion topology. It adds voltage boost capability for complementing the usual voltage buck operation of a traditional voltage source inverter (VSI) with improved reliability. In this paper, a single-loop and dual-loop capacitor voltage control techniques for the ZSI are digitally designed based on a third order small signal model of the ZSI, implemented using a digital signal processor (DSP) and compared. Biological neural systems are powerful mechanisms for controlling biological sys- tems. While the complexity of biological neural networks makes exact simulation intractable, several key aspects lend themselves to implementation on computational systems.

This thesis constructs a discrete event neural network simulation that implements aspects of biological neural networks. A combined genetic programming/simulated annealing approach is utilized to design network structures that function as regulators for continuous time dynamic systems in the presence of process noise when simulated using a discrete event neural simulation.

Clusters of inferior olive neurons (IONs) in the olive-cerebellar system play an important role in providing synchronized motor control signals for the activation of large number of muscles. We present MLE+, a tool for energy-efficient building automation design, co-simulation and analysis. The tool leverages the high-fidelity building simulation capabilities of EnergyPlus and the scientific computation and design capabilities of Matlab for controller design. In this report we look at the problem of peak power reduction for buildings with electric radiant floor heating systems. Uncoordinated operation of a multi-zone radiant floor heating system can result in temporally correlated electricity demand surges or peaks in the building’s electricity consumption. As peak power prices are 200-400 times that of the nominal rate, this uncoordinated activity can result in high electricity costs and expensive system operation. We present our recent results in the area of distributed control over wireless networks. In our previous work, we introduced the concept of a Wireless Control Network (WCN), where the network acts as a decentralized structured controller. In this case, the network is not used only as a communication medium (as in traditional control paradigms), but instead as a fully distributed computational substrate. We present a distributed scheme used for control over wireless networks. In our previous work, we introduced the concept of a Wireless Control Network (WCN), where the network itself, with no centralized node, acts as the controller. In this work, we show how the WCN can be modified to include observer style updates which substantially improves robustness of the closed-loop system to link failures. In addition, we analyze how the WCN simplifies extraction of the communication and computation schedules and enables system compositionality and scalability.

We study the problem of stabilizing a linear system over a wireless control network. We propose a scheme where each wireless node maintains a scalar state, and periodically updates it as a linear combination of neighboring plant outputs and node states. We make connections to decentralized fixed modes and structured system theory to provide conditions on the network topology that allow the system to be stabilized. It is expected that preoperative planning of RAMICS will improve the rate of success by considering robot kinematics, patient-specific thoracic anatomy, and procedure-specific intraoperative conditions. The resistance measurement in the resistance spot welding (RSW), is an ongoing research topic. The high current flow during the welding process induces an electromagnetic field in the wires which are attached to the electrodes to measure tip voltage. This results an additional voltage drop which is proportional to the derivative of current. Also the presence of silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) in the welding power supply generates harmonics in both supply voltage and current. The authors present the optimal transient stability control problem in a hierarchical structure for multimachine power systems. The two-level structure retains the local closed-loop controls, thereby easing its implementation on existing systems. The formulation accounts for nonlinearities and interconnections, and the optimization of the system transient performance is obtained with less computational effort. Since the computations are distributed among the many local feedback subsystems, the storage and solution times are considerably less than those required by a single overall centralized controller. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of power density [Watts/m2] into economics. By introducing an explicit spatial structure into a simple general equilibrium model we are able to show how the power density of available energy resources determines the extent of energy exploitation, the density of urban agglomerations, and the peak level of income per capita. Using a simple Malthusian model to sort population across geographic space we demonstrate how the density of available energy supplies creates density in energy demands by agglomerating economic activity.
