We consider the problem of computing m shortest paths between a source node s and a target node t in a stage graph. Polynomial time algorithms known to solve this problem use complicated data structures. This paper proposes a very simple algorithm for computing all m shortest paths in a stage graph efficiently. The proposed algorithm does not use any complicated data structure and can be implemented in a straightforward way by using only array data structure. This problem appears as a sub-problem for planning risk reduced multiple k-legged trajectories for aerial vehicles.

While most previous studies on mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) rely on the assumption that nodes are randomly distributed in the network coverage area, this assumption is unlikely to hold, as nodes tend to be cluttered around hot spots like the site of an accident or disaster. We refer to this as a clustered layout. Intuitively, a MANET with the clustered layout may suffer from serious performance degradation due to the excessive collisions in congested hot spots and space underutilization of sparse areas. A quantum cascade (QC) laser is a specific type of semiconductor laser that operates through principles of quantum mechanics. In less than a decade QC lasers are already able to outperform previously designed double heterostructure semiconductor lasers. Because there is a genuine lack of compact and coherent devices which can operate in the far-infrared region the motivation exists for designing a terahertz QC laser. The deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in recent military operations has had success in carrying out surveillance and combat missions in sensitive areas. Advanced analysis and optimal design techniques that achieve performance improvement for multiple model adaptive control (MMAC) and multiple model adaptive estimation (MMAE) based control are developed and tested for this dissertation research. An adjunct area of research yielded modified linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control design techniques that also can be applied to nonadaptive control. For the Modified LQG (MLQG) controller, the proposed designs remove the assumption that the Kalman filter as the observer and the controller gain matrix design are necessarily based on the same model as the best system model. Transfer functions which are a composite of delay terms cause problems for computer packages, such as MATLAB, in calculating the frequency response open loop transfer function, as the form of the open loop transfer function is irrational. So, the delay terms have to be approximated. There are several ways to evaluate a delay term. A calculator such as MATHEMATICA uses the exact representation of the delay called the Euler form. Velocity-based (VB) multiple model networks have the advantage of allowing the capture of the dynamics of non-linear systems when compared to conventional multiple model networks, for they build a direct relationship between the non-linear system and the VB linearisation. To have the best use of modelled dynamic information for the controller design, this paper proposes a novel controller design approach, which associates an integral action with state feedback in local controller design. The ability of PI and PID controllers to compensate many practical processes has led to their wide acceptance in industrial applications. The proportional integral derivative (PID) controller is the most dominant form of automatic controller in industrial use today. With this technique, it is necessary to adjust the controller parameters according to the nature of the process. Thus, for effective control of a pasteurisation process, for example, specific values need to be chosen for the P, I and D parameters, which will be different for the values required to control, for example, a distillation column. In control systems, a way to evaluate the stability of a system is to determine the magnitude and phase of the open loop system transfer function in the frequency domain. But due to the nature of the phase expression, practice and theory are not aligned. Some problems arise when the phase is determined, caused by the properties of the arctan function. This paper analyses these phase problems for a third order lag system and a third order lag with time delay system. It also presents modifications to obtain the analytically correct phase values from the computed values.

Novel constructions of empirical controllability and observability gramians for nonlinear systems for subsequent use in a balanced truncation style of model reduction are proposed. The new gramians are based on a generalisation of the fundamental solution for a Linear Time-Varying system. Relationships between the given gramians for nonlinear systems and the standard gramians for both Linear Time-Invariant and Linear Time-Varying systems are established as well as relationships to prior constructions proposed for empirical gramians. Application of the new gramians is illustrated through a sample test-system.
