Dark Current Rts-Noise In Silicon Image Sensors, Benjamin William Hendrickson
Dark Current Rts-Noise In Silicon Image Sensors, Benjamin William Hendrickson
Dissertations and Theses
Random Telegraph Signal (RTS) noise is a random noise source defined by discrete and metastable changes in the magnitude of a signal. Though observed in a variety of physical processes, RTS is of particular interest to image sensor fabrication where progress in the suppression of other noise sources has elevated its noise contribution to the point of approaching the limiting noise source in scientific applications.
There have been two basic physical sources of RTS noise reported in image sensors. The first involves a charge trap in the oxide layer of the source follower in a CMOS image sensor. The capture …

Detecting Suicide Risk From Wristworn Activity Tracker Data Using Machine Learning Approaches, Pallavi Atluri
Detecting Suicide Risk From Wristworn Activity Tracker Data Using Machine Learning Approaches, Pallavi Atluri
Electrical Engineering Theses
Suicide is a prevalent cause of death worldwide and depression is a primary concern of many suicidal acts. It is possible that an individual during depression never has any suicidal thoughts at all. On the other hand, some individuals in stable condition with no apparent symptoms of depression feel urges to commit suicide (suicidal ideation). Many such individuals never let anyone know what they are feeling or planning. Suicidal ideation considered an important precursor to suicidal acts.
Detecting the suicide risk in individuals with mood disorders is a major challenge. The current clinical practice to assess suicide risk in these …

Real-Time Audio-Midi Controller, Brian Shino Balberchak
Computer Engineering
Most MIDI controllers used in music production use a regular keyboard to generate the MIDI notes that are sent to the synthesizer. This project aims to provide the user with a different way of generating MIDI data: by playing an instrument of their choice with a passive electronic pickup to generate MIDI notes that correspond with the fundamental frequency of the musical pitch being played. The pitch-detecting algorithm used in this application utilizes a modified form of auto-correlation.
As an embedded systems project that uses signal-processing techniques, the knowledge of topics from the following courses was essential:

Radar Signal Processing For Interference Mitigation, Zhe Geng
Radar Signal Processing For Interference Mitigation, Zhe Geng
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
It is necessary for radars to suppress interferences to near the noise level to achieve the best performance in target detection and measurements. In this dissertation work, innovative signal processing approaches are proposed to effectively mitigate two of the most common types of interferences: jammers and clutter. Two types of radar systems are considered for developing new signal processing algorithms: phased-array radar and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. For phased-array radar, an innovative target-clutter feature-based recognition approach termed as Beam-Doppler Image Feature Recognition (BDIFR) is proposed to detect moving targets in inhomogeneous clutter. Moreover, a new ground moving target detection algorithm …
Head Waves In Ocean Acoustic Ambient Noise: Measurements And Modeling, Martin Siderius, Jie Li, Peter Gerstoft
Head Waves In Ocean Acoustic Ambient Noise: Measurements And Modeling, Martin Siderius, Jie Li, Peter Gerstoft
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Seismic interferometry recovers the Green’s function between two receivers by cross-correlating the field measured from sources that surround the receivers. In the seismic literature, it has been widely reported that this processing can produce artifacts in the Green’s function estimate called “spurious multiples” or the “virtual refracted wave.” The spurious multiples are attributed to the head wave and its multiples and travels in the seabed. The head wave phenomenon is shown to be observable from both controlled active sources and from ocean ambient noise and for both vertical and horizontal arrays. The processing used is a generalization of the passive …

Improved Iir-Type Fractional Order Digital Integrators Using Cat Swarm Optimization, Shibendu Mahata, Suman Kumar Saha, Rajib Kar, Durbadal Mandal
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Design of wideband infinite impulse response (IIR) digital fractional order integrators (DFOIs) based on a bio-inspired metaheuristic optimization approach called the cat swarm optimization (CSO) algorithm is presented in this paper. To investigate the efficiency of the proposed approach, the CSO-based DFOIs are evaluated against those of the approximations designed using real-coded genetic algorithm (RGA), standard particle swarm optimization (PSO), and differential evolution (DE) by different magnitude and phase response error metrics. Simulation results reveal the better frequency response of the CSO-based DFOIs in comparison with the competing designs. Both parametric and nonparametric statistical hypothesis tests validate the performance consistency …
Temperature Robust Longwave Infrared Hyperspectral Change Detection, Nicholas A. Durkee
Temperature Robust Longwave Infrared Hyperspectral Change Detection, Nicholas A. Durkee
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, we develop and evaluate change detection algorithms for longwave infrared (LWIR) hyperspectral imagery. Because measured radiance in the LWIR domain depends on unknown surface temperature, care must be taken to prevent false alarms resulting from in-scene temperature differences that appear as material changes. We consider fewer variables. Examples using synthetic and measured data quantify the computational complexity of the proposed methods and demonstrate orders of magnitude reduction in false alarm rates relative to existing methods. Four strategies to mitigate this effect. In the first, pre-processing via traditional temperatureemissivity separation yields approximately temperature-invariant emissivity vectors for use in …
Design And Validation Of A Low Cost High Speed Atomic Force Microscope, Michael Ganzer, Tien Pham
Design And Validation Of A Low Cost High Speed Atomic Force Microscope, Michael Ganzer, Tien Pham
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
The Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) is an important instrument in nanoscale topography, but it is expensive and slow. The authors designed an AFM to overcome both limitations. To do this, they used an Optical Pickup Unit (OPU) from a DVD player as the laser and photodetector system to minimize cost and they did not implement a vertical control loop, which maximized potential speed. Students will be able to be use this device to make nanoscale measurements and engage in micro-engineering. To prototype this idea, the authors tested an OPU with a silicon wafer and demonstrated the ability to consistently distinguish …
Feasibility Of Melville Marginalia Authorship Differentiation, Aaron Burdin
Feasibility Of Melville Marginalia Authorship Differentiation, Aaron Burdin
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
We examine the feasibility of using image processing techniques to determine differentiation in authorship of historical pencil marks. Pencil marks with unattributed and attributed authorship are segmented from digital images of historical books. Analysis is performed on five features that are extracted from the "vertical" pencil marks, with those features used as a basis for authorship of marks. These marks consist of single stroke marks that are interspersed in the same document. We describe the challenges of the digital format that we were given and the steps taken in using autonomous segmentation to save pixel locations of marks. Five mark …
Low-Resolution Adc Receiver Design, Mimo Interference Cancellation Prototyping, And Phy Secrecy Analysis., Chen Cao
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation studies three independent research topics in the general field of wireless communications. The first topic focuses on new receiver design with low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADC). In future massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems, multiple high-speed high-resolution ADCs will become a bottleneck for practical applications because of the hardware complexity and power consumption. One solution to this problem is to adopt low-cost low-precision ADCs instead. In Chapter II, MU-MIMO-OFDM systems only equipped with low-precision ADCs are considered. A new turbo receiver structure is proposed to improve the overall system performance. Meanwhile, ultra-low-cost communication devices can enable massive deployment of disposable wireless …

Parallel homogeneous and heterogeneous platforms implementing adaptive dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) based on the observation of system fullness and workload prediction are developed for balanced …
Evaluating Features For Broad Species Based Classification Of Bird Observations Using Dual-Polarized Doppler Weather Radar, Sheila Werth
Evaluating Features For Broad Species Based Classification Of Bird Observations Using Dual-Polarized Doppler Weather Radar, Sheila Werth
Masters Theses
Wind energy is one of the fastest-growing segments of the world energy market; however, wind energy facilities can have detrimental effects on wildlife, especially birds and bats. The ability to monitor vulnerable species in the vicinity of proposed wind sites could enable site selection that favors more vulnerable species, but current monitoring tools lack this classification capability. This work analyzes polarimetric and Doppler measurements of migrating birds for species based variation.
A novel two stage feature extraction technique was developed to enable comparison between birds. Stage one involves mapping time changing radar measurements to the birds behavioral state in time …
Experimental And Computational Studies Of Cortical Neural Network Properties Through Signal Processing, Wesley Patrick Clawson
Experimental And Computational Studies Of Cortical Neural Network Properties Through Signal Processing, Wesley Patrick Clawson
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Previous studies, both theoretical and experimental, of network level dynamics in the cerebral cortex show evidence for a statistical phenomenon called criticality; a phenomenon originally studied in the context of phase transitions in physical systems and that is associated with favorable information processing in the context of the brain. The focus of this thesis is to expand upon past results with new experimentation and modeling to show a relationship between criticality and the ability to detect and discriminate sensory input. A line of theoretical work predicts maximal sensory discrimination as a functional benefit of criticality, which can then be characterized …

Applications In Low-Power Phased Array Weather Radars, Robert A. Palumbo Jr
Doctoral Dissertations
Low-cost X-band radars are an emerging technology that offer significant advantages over traditional systems for weather remote sensing applications. X-band radars provide enhanced angular resolution at a fraction of the aperture size compared to larger, lower frequency systems. Because of their low cost and small form factor, these radars can now be integrated into more research and commercial applications. This work presents research and development activities using a low-cost, X-band (9410 MHz) Phase-Tilt Radar. The phase-tilt design is a novel phased array architecture that allows for rapid electronic scanning in azimuth and mechanical tilting in elevation, as a compromise between …

Recently, classifying different emotional content of speech signals automatically has become one of the most important comprehensive inquiries. The main subject in this field is related to the improvement of the correct classification rate (CCR) resulting from the proposed techniques. However, a literature review shows that there is no notable research on finding appropriate parameters that are related to the intensity of emotions. In this article, we investigate the proper features to be employed in the recognition of emotional speech utterances according to their intensities. In this manner, 4 emotional classes of the Berlin Emotional Speech database, happiness, anger, fear, …

Advances In Autonomous-Underwater-Vehicle Based Passive Bottom-Loss Estimation By Processing Of Marine Ambient Noise, Lanfranco Muzi
Advances In Autonomous-Underwater-Vehicle Based Passive Bottom-Loss Estimation By Processing Of Marine Ambient Noise, Lanfranco Muzi
Dissertations and Theses
Accurate modeling of acoustic propagation in the ocean waveguide is important to SONAR-performance prediction, and requires, particularly in shallow water environments, characterizing the bottom reflection loss with a precision that databank-based modeling cannot achieve. Recent advances in the technology of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) make it possible to envision a survey system for seabed characterization composed of a short array mounted on a small AUV. The bottom power reflection coefficient (and the related reflection loss) can be estimated passively by beamforming the naturally occurring marine ambient-noise acoustic field recorded by a vertical line array of hydrophones. However, the reduced array …
Frame Synchronization Techniques For Inet-Formatted Soqpsk-Tg Communications, Andrew Dennis Mcmurdie
Frame Synchronization Techniques For Inet-Formatted Soqpsk-Tg Communications, Andrew Dennis Mcmurdie
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, frame synchronization for iNET formatted SOQPSK-TG communications is considered. Frame synchronization for M-ary linear modulations (MQAM, MPSK, etc.) are known in the literature using pilot detection methods, but are based on a signal model that does not apply to SOQPSK-TG. Maximum likelihood frame synchronizers are derived for an SOQPSK-TG system following assumptions found in the literature. The analysis shows that a reinterpretation of known detectors operating on the samples of the received waveform and locally stored samples of the pilot is the optimum approach for this case. Simulation results for an AWGN channel and several multipath channels …
Simple Secrecy: Analog Stream Cipher For Secure Voice Communication, John M. Campbell
Simple Secrecy: Analog Stream Cipher For Secure Voice Communication, John M. Campbell
Senior Honors Theses
Voice signals are inherently analog, and some voice communication systems still utilize analog signals. Existing analog cryptographic methods do not satisfactorily provide cryptosecurity for communication systems due to several limitations. This paper proposes a novel means of provided cryptosecurity for analog signals without digitization; thereby avoiding the latency which results from ADC/DAC conversions. This method utilizes the principles of the digital stream cipher, generating instead a continuous pseudorandom analog key stream signal which is transformed with the original analog signal to create an encrypted ciphertext signal which is statistically independent of the original signal and the key stream signal. The …

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Through silicon vias (TSVs) enable 3-dimensional (3D) integrated circuits (ICs), which have the potential to reduce the power consumption, interconnect length and overall communication latency in modern nanoelectronics systems. High-speed signal transmission channels through stacked silicon substrates are critical for 3D heterogeneous integration. This work presents systematic analyses of fabricated 3D IC test structures. This includes test structure design, fabrication, experimental characterization, equivalent circuit modeling and full wave simulations for high-speed signal transmission of the TSV based 3D IC channels.
Improved Random Demodulator For Compressed Sensing Applications, Sathya Narayanan Hariharan
Improved Random Demodulator For Compressed Sensing Applications, Sathya Narayanan Hariharan
Open Access Theses
The advances in the field of signal processing have led to the continuous increase in the bandwidth of signals. Sampling these signals becomes harder and harder due to the increased bandwidth. This brings in need for a complex high rate ADCs to meet the Nyquist rate which is the minimum rate to avoid aliasing. For a given increase in bandwidth, there has to be a corresponding increase in the sampling rate of ADC. This might not be possible in the near future at the current rate of increase in bandwidth. Hence, there is a need to replace the current Nyquist …

The problem of fault diagnosis and condition monitoring of ball bearings is a multidisciplinary subject. It involves research subjects from diverse disciplines of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and in particular signal processing. In the first step, one should identify the correct method of investigation. The methods of investigation for condition monitoring of ball bearings include acoustic emission measurements, temperature monitoring, electrical current monitoring, debris analysis and vibration signal analysis. In this thesis the vibration signal analysis is employed. Once the method of analysis is selected, then features sensitive to faults should be calculated from the signal. While some of the …
Enhanced Sonar Array Target Localization Using Time-Frequency Interference Phenomena, Jordan Almon Shibley
Enhanced Sonar Array Target Localization Using Time-Frequency Interference Phenomena, Jordan Almon Shibley
Dissertations and Theses
The ability of traditional active sonar processing methods to detect targets is often limited by clutter and reverberation from ocean environments. Similarly, multipath arrivals from radiating sources such as ships and submarines are received at sensors in passive sonar systems. Reverberation and multipath signals introduce constructive and destructive interference patterns in received spectrograms in both active and passive sonar applications that vary with target range and frequency. The characterization and use of interference phenomena can provide insights into environmental parameters and target movement in conjunction with standard processing methods including spectrograms and array beamforming.
This thesis focuses on utilizing the …
A Novel Signal Processing Method For Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring In Spinal Surgeries, Krishnatej Vedala
A Novel Signal Processing Method For Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring In Spinal Surgeries, Krishnatej Vedala
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring is an integral part of spinal surgeries and involves the recording of somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP). However, clinical application of IONM still requires anywhere between 200 to 2000 trials to obtain an SSEP signal, which is excessive and introduces a significant delay during surgery to detect a possible neurological damage. The aim of this study is to develop a means to obtain the SSEP using a much less, twelve number of recordings. The preliminary step involved was to distinguish the SSEP with the ongoing brain activity. We first establish that the brain activity is indeed quasi-stationary whereas …

Piezoelectric Transformer And Hall-Effect Based Sensing And Disturbance Monitoring Methodology For High-Voltage Power Supply Lines, Sneha Arun Lele
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Advancements in relaying algorithms have led to an accurate and robust protection system widely used in power distribution. However, in low power sections of relaying systems, standard voltage and current measurement techniques are still used. These techniques have disadvantages like higher cost, size, electromagnetic interference, resistive losses and measurement errors and hence provide a number of opportunities for improvement and integration. We present a novel microsystem methodology to sense low-power voltage and current signals and detect disturbances in high-voltage power distribution lines. The system employs dual sensor architecture that consists of a piezoelectric transformer in combination with Hall-effect sensor, used …

Distributed Beamforming With Imperfect Phase Synchronization For Cognitive Radio Networks, Andrew Minturn, Deepraj Vernekar, Yaoqing Lamar Yang, Hamid Sharif
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
In this paper, we present the analysis and simulation evaluation of a cognitive radio network employing a distributed beamforming technique with imperfect phase synchronization in the presence of a primary receiver. Our system model consists of a group of cognitive transmitters, each with an ideal isotropic antenna and equal transmit power, communicating with a secondary receiver in the farfield. The objective of the network of cognitive transmitters is to optimize its beampattern in the direction of the secondary receiver while minimizing the beampattern in the direction of the primary receiver to a certain threshold. The phases of the transmitted signals …

Polyspectral Signal Analysis Techniques For Condition Based Maintenance Of Helicopter Drive-Train System, Mohammed Ahmed Hassan Mohammed
Theses and Dissertations
For an efficient maintenance of a diverse fleet of air- and rotorcraft, effective condition based maintenance (CBM) must be established based on rotating components monitored vibration signals.
In this dissertation, we present theory and applications of polyspectral signal processing techniques for condition monitoring of critical components in the AH-64D helicopter tail rotor drive train system. Currently available vibration-monitoring tools are mostly built around auto- and cross-power spectral analysis which have limited performance in detecting frequency correlations higher than second order. Studying higher order correlations and their Fourier transforms, higher order spectra, provides more information about the vibration signals which helps …
